St. John the Baptist Parish 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time January 20, 2019 Dear Parishioners: On January 3rd I received a large white envelope from the Family Life Council, Inc., in Wauwatosa. It was addressed by hand and mailed to me by name at St. Thomas Aquinas. The envelope contained four items: * an 8½ x 11 poster depicting the Memorial for Unborn Children, a sculpture by Slovakian sculptor Martin Hudáček intended to portray post-abortion pain, mercy and forgiveness * a fact sheet about the sculpture * a 3 x 5 card depicting the same work on one side and a Prayer for Healing on the other * a brief message from the President of the Family Life Council, Inc., to a generic Dear Pastor with instructions for how to order copies of the card The Prayer for Healing reads: Eternal Father, Source of all mercy and love, out of love for us you sent your Son, and willed that blood and water flow from his side to cleanse us of sin and restore lost innocence. Hear the cry of each woman who mourns the loss of her child to abortion. Forgive her sin, restore her to your grace, and still the terror of her heart with a peace beyond all understanding. Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of all tenderness and our Mother, strengthen her faith in you. Give her the consolation to believe that her child is now living in the Lord. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who conquered sin and death, and who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Neither the fact sheet nor the brief message called attention to the pending anniversary of the January 22, 1973, U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, so perhaps the timing of the envelope s arrival was merely coincidental. In any case, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and placed an order for one thousand cards. I ve divided them up, 750 for St. John the Baptist (where they can be found on the tables holding church bulletins and the doors into church) and 250 for St. Thomas Aquinas (where they are on the benches/tables holding the Matthew Kelly gift books). Whether or not you know someone whose life has directly or indirectly been impacted by abortion, I invite you, if you are so inclined, to pick up a card and make a point of praying the Prayer for Healing next Tuesday and, perhaps, periodically thereafter. Thanks. Father Phil Welcome to the Newest Members of our Catholic Faith Family Baptized Sunday, January 20, 2019 Thea Marie Kern Daughter of Thomas Kern and Somer Flaig Carter James Pavlat Son of Steve and Jenna Pavlat May their families enjoy the Blessings of the sacrament and continue in God s Love throughout their lives. In Loving Memory Our parish family extends its sympathy to the family of William E. Heberlein May William, with God s Blessing, rest in peace. Fr. Phil s Coffee Klatch An informal, open discussion with Father Phil Wednesday, January 23 St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel 10:00-11:00am All are welcome!

ZeruZeru, Inc. Supporting the Mary Mother of God Perpetual Help Center in Tanzania, East Africa St. John the Baptist and St. Thomas Aquinas Twinning Project We are pleased to share a video of Karene and the children at Mary Mother of God Perpetual Help Center. The video will play after Masses in the church gathering space. The video will also be viewable on our website. Please continue to hold Karene and all those she is encountering in prayer, as she wraps up this trip to Tanzania. Service at the Center Like so many of us, whether students or families or those with a few extra hours, service is also a part of the student s, at the center, experience. [We ve heard about all the great service that the students of SJB school and students of SJB faith formation classes have been doing leading up to the holidays.] Sister Helena, Director of the Mary Mother of God of Perpetual Help center in Lamadi, Tanzania, East Africa which is supported by ZeruZeru, has been teaching the children there that, although they are often the recipients of charity, they also need to give charity to others. Over the last several months, the children helped some of the older members in the local village to clean their yards, dig garbage pits and offer extra food (which had grown in the Center s garden). In this way, the children will have a better understanding of the Gospel. It also enhances the perception others in the village may have of them, reinforcing the fact that, although they have albinism, they are not evil spirits nor good luck charms - they are human beings able to contribute to society like anyone else. Learn more about ZeruZeru, Inc. on their website: www.savethealbinochildren.org/zeruzeru-news St. John the Baptist Former Chapel Update After review and careful consideration of the feedback received through comment cards, Q&A sessions and from parishioners at-large, the Stewardship and Prayer & Worship Committees have given their recommendations to the Pastoral Council regarding moving forward with the conversion of the old chapel. The motivation that guided the decision to change this area is to create a space to enhance fellowship and community for ALL parishioners and guests of St. John the Baptist Parish. It is the intention that the space be multi-functional and easily adaptable for a variety of prayer life and stewardship purposes. At the January 8 th meeting, the Pastoral Council voted to give this recommendation to Fr. Phil. Fr Phil has agreed to move forward up to the extent that the budgeted amount of $5,000 as augmented by designated donations will allow. We will keep you abreast of developments as they happen. A complete summary of the feedback received is available in the back of church, at the parish office or can be emailed upon request. Please send your email request to sjbparish@sjbplymouth.org. Take STOCK in the Youth of SJB Students will be selling shares of stock after Masses this weekend to help fund the Mission Trip to Nashville, Tennessee. Your donations show our students that SJB parish supports them on their mission to help others. The Faith Formation office will continue to collect donations if you missed the opportunity this weekend. Please feel free to send donations to: Amy Albers, 116 Pleasant St., Plymouth, 53073 or you can drop an envelope in the collection marked Mission Trip.
