Pastor s Notes The First Book of Samuel is one of those unforgettable Scriptures about some real people in real circumstances that deal with supernatural interventions by God. It is also a display of faith which changes our whole outlook on life and demands a strong will of obedience to its responsibilities. Samuel was the first son of Hannah who suffered ridicule because of her infertility. Her tormented life brought her to Eli s temple to pray for a child. Her stress was so severe that Eli actually thought she was a drunk, but on listening to her he finds her to be quite sober and in deep pain. Eli offers a prayer for her and prays that God will give her a child. Hannah finally conceives and she dedicates her child, Samuel, to Eli s temple. She later gives birth to three more sons and two daughters. Eli s temple suffers from greedy, lustful and disobedient sons who defied Eli s corrections. God reveals they will all die young by the sword. God endows Samuel with a humble and obedient disposition and eventually makes him a prophet who will eventually anoint David as king. One night Samuel was awakened by a mysterious call. While he thinks it is Eli calling him, Eli gives him some spiritual direction to respond to the Caller with Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. Most of us do not recognize when God is calling us because we do not live in silence. A spiritual director can train us to achieve that silence so we can discover what is God s will for us. In the first stage, it is usually one of the four vocations: married, single, consecrated life and priesthood. The next stages are often described as a journey because they are full of surprises that can bring us to places we have never imagined. Samuel will be called by God to anoint Saul and David as a king. The Gospel brings us to the call of Andrew and another disciple as well as Peter. Here the call is very direct, by Jesus Himself. These chosen are not meant to be permanent because, like all of us, we are temporarily in this world. But they do live on in a special charism of being a successor to the Apostles in their dioceses. The will of God never interferes with personal choice. While God chooses to make us for a purpose, we still can say yes or no. Even Mary, the Mother of God, had the choice to accept or reject the will of God. Praise God that she accepted! Since our Baptism we have been adopted by God as His children. Our parents and godparents play an important role in keeping the faith alive in these children, but like the flickering light handed down from the Paschal Candle at Baptism, it can easily be blown out. St. Paul points out how personal sin changes our inner disposition. Living in mortal sin has a negative, yet invisible, influence on our effectiveness in keeping and conveying the faith especially since many mortal sins are habit forming. It can take a long time, and sometimes never, to recognize how unhappy we can become in this enslavement and what further depravities it may lead us into. We Catholics are called to follow Jesus freely. Jesus tells us how to find happiness. It generally conflicts with our passions, like Eli s sons and what we read in the newspapers. Let us pray to Jesus and ask Him to help us see that we can enhance our own personal happiness by intensifying our love for Jesus Who says, If you love me, keep my commandments. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "We have found the Messiah!" Who is Jesus for you? John calls Jesus the Lamb of God and thus signifies Jesus' mission as the One who redeems us from our sins. The blood of the Passover Lamb(Exodus 12) delivered the Israelites from their oppression in Egypt and from the plague of death. The Lord Jesus freely offered up his life for us on the cross as the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 Corinthians 5:7). The blood which he poured out for us on the cross cleanses, heals, and frees us from our slavery to sin, and from the "wages of sin which is death" (Romans 6:23) and the "destruction of both body and soul in hell" (Matthew 10:28). It is significant that John was the son of the priest, Zachariah, who participated in the daily sacrifice of a lamb in the temple for the sins of the people (Exodus 29). In Jesus John saw the true and only sacrifice which could deliver us from bondage to sin, death, and the powers of hell. How did John know the true identity of Jesus, as the Son of God and Savior of the world (John 1:29)? The Holy Spirit revealed to John Jesus' true nature, such that John bore witness that this is the Son of God. How can we be certain that Jesus is truly the Christ, the Son of the living God? The Holy Spirit makes the Lord Jesus Christ known to us through the gift of faith. God gives us freely of his Spirit that we may comprehend - with enlightened minds and eyes of faith - the great mystery and plan of God to unite all things in his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
