REIFENBERG... Pastor for the Clustered Parishes of St. John the Baptist, Plymouth and St. Thomas Aquinas, Elkhart Lake

St. John the Baptist Plymouth July 16, 2017 Dear Parishioners: Well, my orientation into the lifestyles of Plymouth and Elkhart Lake has taken a definite turn for the deeper over the past week. 1. I ve shopped at both Piggly Wiggly and Pick n Save, and find myself just a little miffed that I have to drive so far to get to a decent grocery store. (I was spoiled at St. Dominic s: Pick n Save was just five blocks away.) Guess I m going to have to start making a shopping list this is just too far to travel to pick up something that I missed on the first go around. 2. I m learning local cemeteries. My first funeral was at St. Fridolin s with the interment at St. Fridolin/St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Greenbush; I d seen that cemetery many times on my way to Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution for Mass over the past five years. And I know STA has another cemetery over near the Town of Rhine (on County Road FF, I think). And SJB s is right on Highway 67. But I almost missed an interment at my second funeral. The cemetery this time was Woodlawn (on County Road C, just south of Highway 23), which I didn t know existed! I was thinking Greenlawn (on Superior back in Sheboygan). And that s where I would ve been at 11:00 one Saturday morning if I hadn t asked the funeral director if we were going to be graveside or in the chapel. (There s no chapel at Woodlawn!) He was kind toward me in my ignorance. Woodlawn, Greenlawn, Wildwood,... what s in a name??? 3. But the real clincher was the Elkhart Lake Fourth of July Parade. On the 2nd of July. Chris, my secretary at St. Thomas Aquinas, had told me even before I officially arrived that parishioners were preparing a float for this year s parade and were asking if I d ride along. I wasn t too keen on the idea, having had my fill of parades fifty years ago in my West Point days. But she said the float designers were really excited about what they were doing and by the possibility that I might accompany it, so I gave in. After all, what could possibly go wrong? I had a baptism at SJB s 9:30 Mass that morning congratulations to six-week old Hailey! And Eric Boos was giving his truly wonderful mission appeal; so, I got out of there about 10:45. It was raining pretty heavily on my way back to Elkhart Lake, but it seemed to ease up a bit as I drove past Road America. I pulled into my driveway about five minutes to eleven; my ride to the starting point was waiting, so I went in and got a jacket and a hat just to be safe and jumped into the vehicle. And the sky opened up. It poured, and poured, and poured some more. Didn t stop until 12:30, just about the time the parade ended. Of course, Ron Nielsen, one of my trustees at STA and a parade marshal, was mortified. It s never rained on this parade in the thirty-seven years that I ve been connected with it!, he insisted. They delayed the start of the parade because of thunder (and lightning, I presume) but began about twenty minutes late, anyway. (Just so you know: at West Point, they d cancel parades in inclement weather.) I was already pretty soaked by then, so what the heck.... Couldn t get any wetter, could I? Wrong!!! By the end of the parade, even my socks were saturated! At least there was no wind, and the temperature was hovering around 70 Sloshed. my way home and threw everything except the shoes, which were beyond hope into the dryer. I m thinking: I ve earned my keep! See you in a couple of weeks. Father Phil In Loving Memory Our parish family extends its sympathy to the family of June Galloway May June, with God s Blessing, rest in peace. Spend time with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration Mondays 4-8 p.m. (across from Church Hall) Could you not watch one hour with me? Matthew 26:41 Increased Handicap Seating * Just inside the main church doors* We recently created an area in the center of the church by removing a pew to make seating more accessible. We have come to discover that more area is needed and have created more handicap seating as of last week. These areas are just inside the main doors to the church and are close to restrooms and assistance if needed. Holy Communion will be brought to everyone seated in these areas. We invite you and your family to use these areas. We will also be making some of the front pews in the church handicap seating. In our ongoing efforts, we will always be committed to making St. John the Baptist a welcoming place for all.
