3 If you want to be a Warrior... By RICK NISWONGER Brethren Magazine OK, I admit, BC does not stand for Boot Camp. The cool ocean breezes and gentle atmosphere are definitely not the Marine Corps. If someone says drop and give me 10, it probably means drop your books for a pop-quiz on verse 10. How does life near the beach prepare BC students to be Warriors? First: Brethren Christian students are at a tipping point in their lives. They enter as children and leave as young adults. This is the time when ideas, habits and values are formed. As they learn to follow Jesus Christ daily in faith, their relationship to Him grows. This is a relationship they cannot shake! Second: Students are challenged to grapple with the great questions of our time with their Bibles and textbooks open while under the direction of Godly men and women. Learning to think critically and Biblically establishes a well-reasoned faith that is SUSTAINABLE. Third: BC is a community of people connected to God and to each other. These families sacrifice greatly to raise their children in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. This is a rich environment to grow spiritually healthy young adults. The world will truly be in desperate need of them more than ever since they already have their masks on as the flight attendant might say. If you want to be a Warrior, you have to prepare for battle! What progress have we made on the physical campus of BC? After many years of struggle to achieve stability of location, BC signed a guaranteed, long-term lease in the summer of Major repairs on the campus had not been done since the Reagan administration. The board of directors initiated a plan to bring the campus to an appropriate status and fund Brethren s future. The plan includes: An on campus gym/events center ($3 million) Major repairs to the classrooms and building itself ($1 million) City required parking lot and other campus repairs ($500,000) Student scholarship fund ($500,000) Much has been accomplished, including all preliminary city requirements and legal approvals. Now the actual gym construction is the PRIORITY focus. See the chart on page 2 for details. Your giving makes it possible. 4 academics Mr. Vazquez goes to Washington Former BC student body president interns on Capitol Hill Photos courtesy of David Vazquez David Vazquez ( 08), right, poses in front of the Capitol with fellow interns. David was one of 12 college students chosen from across the U.S. for an internship sponsored by The Navigators. David Vazquez will tell you that being an intern in Washington, D.C. is more than an adventure. Working on the Hill is more than the actual work the internship provides; it s about the experience and the opportunity to represent Christ in my attitude and actions, said the BCHS 2008 alumnus. David was one of only 12 college students from across the nation selected to be a part of the Inside Washington program sponsored by The Navigators (an international, interdenominational Christian ministry) this summer. The program focuses on developing young leaders through a college intern training program on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to live out their faith in the political marketplace. David s older brother, Luis, graduated from BCHS in 2006 and was a significant part of the Warrior football team s line. His younger brother, Jonathon, is a senior this fall and is part of the school s football and worship teams. The boys have been brought up in a home that values Christian education 4 Fall 2011 I Brethren Magazine I and service. David s father, Luis, is the pastor of a Long Beach church and his mother, Gloria, is a Spanish teacher. The boys all attended Long Beach Brethren Elementary School through the 6th grade and then came to the Brethren Christian Huntington Beach campus for junior and senior high school. David s story, like so many, was not without a few bumps in the road. David was not showing great enthusiasm for his school work in junior high school. His mother was concerned and spoke with Brethren Christian s Principal Rick Niswonger, about it. They agreed that David was not working up to his God-given potential. Near the end of David s 8th grade year, Mr. Niswonger called David into his office for a friendly chat. David remembers that day as life changing for him. I was so impressed that Mr. Niswonger not only noticed what I was up to, but that he cared, David said. Mr. Niswonger said he thought I could do much better in my classes and that he wanted to pray with me. I went home that summer and gave serious consideration to what he said. When David returned the next fall to begin high school, he had changed in a very good way. David raised his grades from a C average to an A student. He was developing into a strong, influential leader among his peers. He was elected student body president for his senior year. He also served as a leader of student worship. David identified that he had a strong interest in the area of politics and that he desired to make an impact for Christ with his life. David was accepted at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa as a political science major. The Vanguard University website defines van guard [van-gärd] n. as the leader at the forefront in any movement, field or activity. Again, he has been elected student body president, this time for both his junior year and senior year in college. David says of his internship in Washington, D.C. that they are developing us into what it means to be in Christ, and to live

5 academics SpeakerSeries The BCHS Foundation presents a 35th Anniversary Celebration Speaker Series featuring notable alumni of Brethren Christian High School Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 Dr. David L. Hocking ( 57), left, will speak on Biblical Prophecy Saturday, June 16, 2012 Mark Kroeker ( 61), left, Top Cop for the Disney Co. and the U.N. David Vazquez ( 08) interned with the Ways and Means Committee in Washington, D.C. as an insider, reflecting Christ wherever He has put us. Where God put him to work was in the powerful Ways and Means Committee of the US House of Representatives. David tells of that pivotal day in Principal Niswonger s office and the skills he learned at Brethren as foundational in the direction his life is now taking. I try to remind myself everyday, that it is because of God s faithfulness that I was able to walk the marble halls (of Congress), he says. David shared on his blog: One thing I have learned and witnessed is that these Congressmen come to Washington hoping to better the lives of their constituents and the lives of their fellow Americans. They debate vigorously over how this should be done and have different ideologies that influence their policies, but they all work intense hours between their home districts and D.C. trying to advance their causes. It is important to keep these men and women in our prayers as they seek to influence our nation. It is important that we also keep these men and women accountable, as we are the ones that sent them to Washington on our behalf. I was an intern with the House Committee on Ways and Means, known to be the oldest and most powerful committee in Congress. Eight Presidents and eight Vice Presidents have served on this committee, as have 21 Speakers of the House, and four Justices of the Supreme Court. God continues to prepare David for service to Him. Remember David in your prayers and be ready to vote for him in the very near future! Saturday, March 10, 2012 Dr. Martin Rindahl ( 81), left, will recount his Climb to the Top of the World; Summiting Mt. Everest All programs will be held at the High School, beginning at 7pm. 6 Class of 2011: Bobby Frisch was Brethren s TRIPLE THREAT BOBBY FRISCH By KRISTEN ROBERTSON O.C. Family Magazine, June 2011 B obby Frisch excelled in athletics throughout his school career and now accomplished a rare feat: He was awarded All-League recognition for three sports during his senior year: First Team All-League in football and baseball, and Second Team All-League in basketball for Brethren Christian Junior and Senior High School. Bobby s love of sports baseball, in particular extends all the way to the Dominican Republic. He is a co-founder of Operation Double Play, a baseball mission program for the tiny island country. Bobby helped lead this student organization, which collects used baseball gear from around Southern California and ships it to those less fortunate in the Dominican Republic. Having the experience of helping those kids who are less fortunate, especially gathering everything for them with something I myself love, was by far my best accomplishment, says Bobby. He has been a leader on and off the field with his academics and philanthropy. In addition to his scholastic accomplishments, Bobby was named Outstanding History Student for his contributions to the classroom. Once Bobby finishes college, he wants to return to high school and become a baseball coach. I have been taught so much, and I would love to give back to the game that s given me so much, he says. 6 Fall 2011 I Brethren Magazine I

8 campus news Marc Eckel visits with art students at BCHS Worship through art Paint went flying as Christian artist Marc Eckel amazed BCHS students with his talent. Eckel dons all black clothing for the performance so to keep the audience s focus on the portrait of Christ. The painting now hangs in the mall at Brethren Christian. PERFORMING ART Worship time in the Monday morning chapel at Brethren Christian a few months ago took on a whole new look. A former BCHS art teacher at the Cypress campus, Marc Eckel, returned to give one of his nownationally known worship art performances, which he calls a Splat Experience. Eckel, who now travels with the Christian music group Casting Crowns, silently performed an 8-minute painting to the background of the song, Above All. Students were rivited watching Eckel s freehand portrait of Christ emerge over the names of God he d written on the black canvas. After chapel, Eckel spent time talking to BCHS art students about careers, education, and how art can be used to glorify God. Marc is a 1985 art major from Grace College, Winona Lake, Ind. McInally is a former Cincinnati Bengal and All-American at Harvard. He led the Bengals to Super Bowl XVI against Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers. He made his Brethren Christian debut Sept. 1 when the Warriors fell to perennial powerhouse Pasadena Poly in the 2011 season opener. A Brethren Christian dad, McInally has also been a nationally syndicated newspaper columnist and author on the topic of youth sports safety. Spring 2011 Warrior sports roundup By JON BAHNSEN Athletic Director, BCHS Spring 2011 high school athletics went well this school year as one of our teams made the CIF playoffs and one individual Track athlete made the CIF Finals. Boys Varsity Volleyball had 1 win during the 2010 season, but with virtually the same team, they made a huge improvement under the direction of new Coach Tyler Caldwell and qualified for CIF playoffs with 11 wins and as the 4th place representative from the Academy League. Unfortunately, the team fell in the 1st round of the playoffs to a tough Beverly Hills HS team. The team was led by Seniors Riley Thomas, who was named 1st team All Academy League, and Remy Bray, who was named 2nd team All Academy League. Senior Jessica Hodges qualified for the CIF prelims for the 3rd straight year in the pole vault event. She moved on past the prelims and eventually took 3rd place in the CIF finals. Jessica was named Field MVP for the Academy League. Varsity Baseball had a tough season finishing in 5th place in the Academy League, but they battled every game and had some great individual performances from Senior Bobby Frisch, who was named 1st team All Academy League for the fourth time in his career, and Sophomore Justin Neese, who named 2nd team All Academy League. Varsity Softball finished 3rd in the Academy League and barely missed the CIF Playoffs. They were led by Senior pitcher Kelsey McGinnis, who was named 1st team All Academy League, and Junior Shortstop Kelsey Bartlett, who was also named 1st team All Academy League. Boys Golf (photo above) had a good season finishing 4th place in the Academy league. They were led by Senior Max Ransom, who had the team s best scoring average, and Freshman Conner Mahoney, who was named Academy League Honorable Mention. After a one-year hiatus, the Boys Varsity Tennis team was back in action. Although the team did not win a match, they improved greatly under the direction of Coaches Cliff Berwald and Greg Cobian. Senior Nick Zamiski was named 2nd team All Academy League and the future looks bright as the team was comprised of mostly underclassmen. I Brethren Magazine I Fall
