1 SOLANA BEACH CIVIC AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY A Message from the President I hope that you had a lovely Memorial Day weekend. I would like to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to Carol Childs for her beautiful arrangement of our booth at the Fiesta Del Sol and her tireless work in manning the booth! Thanks to all of you who worked the shifts. It is always fun to catch up with new and old friends while working the booth. You can see how much people love the history and want to share their experiences. Next year, I think that we should bring a tape recorder or video recorder so that we can have people share and preserve their oral history and memories of Solana Beach. One of the requests that I received at the Fiesta Del Sol was to reach out and see if anyone has a picture of the Old Roller Rink (AKA the Antique Warehouse). This building is being demolished shortly. So far, we have not been able to locate any pictures of the Roller Rink in it's Hey Day. If you have any please submit a copy to mstribling1@yahoo.com. June 5:00pm is our ANNUAL INSTALLATION Tony's Jacal. This is a wonderful kick off to our SUMMER BREAK. This year we will be celebrating a very special family. Wally Oliver and Dave Roberts have been pillars of our community and county for many years. They are off on their next GREAT ADVENTURE. Please join us in thanking them for their service and wishing them well. They will be missed! Connecticut here they come! Be sure to get your reservations in before June 3rd. (Reservation form on page 4.) 3 New Board of Directors Congratulations to our Board of Directors who were elected at our May 12 General Meeting. We thank you for the gift of your time and energy on the behalf of the members of the Solana Beach Civic & Historical Society. Thank you! President: Michele Stribling Vice President: Sandy Mills, Treasurer: Peggy Martin Recording Secretary: Suellen Lodge Corresponding Secretary: Cindi Clemons It is with great pleasure we welcome the following new SBC&HS members: Rick and Ann Appleton Kristy and Chris Harden Patricia Sarkar Molly Fleming & Tim Galvin Sharon & Steven Rose SeaWeeder Tip for June 2017 POSTPONE PRUNING TO PROTECT TREES, BUSHES AND BIRDS When is the best time to trim bushes and trees? Not spring! Warm days and longer sunlight hours promote sap flow, leaf growth and flower blooms. Your lush trees and bushes also provide protected habitat for nesting birds. Most of our songbirds are still tending their families in June and July; the mockingbird nests into August. Besides delighting us with flight and song, birds eat bugs that can become pests in your garden. Lightly trim trees and shrubs to direct growth in late summer or fall. Wait until winter, when plants are dormant, to do the heavy pruning and shaping that promotes robust spring growth. For more information, contact Katie pelicandesign@sbcglobal.net PAGE 3
