No, this is not a sports or football event, it is an opportunity for our Legion members, outside groups and individuals who participated in post activities this year to discuss this year's activities and talk about what we as a post want to do in Out of the 377 members of our post, I would like to meet and get to know a lot more of you. This will be a great time to meet our current Officer Corp, new members, and ask questions and get some answers about the post. We request an RSVP no later than January 8th. We also request you bring either a hot or cold dish to add to the festivities. How about Rudolph Nelson? This past month our Post along with the Soldier Angels worked the Food Booth at the Christmas Fair at the Fair Grounds. It was a lot of work, but we had a lot of fun doing it. The money earned by the Post is being used to purchase toys for some Veteran's families that cannot afford toys for their children. While we were working, we were visited by one of Santa's most trusted Navy Veteran Reindeer, Rudolph Nelson. Rudolph Nelson was used by Santa during the end of the Korean War replacing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. It seemed when Santa was flying all around the Pacific and around Alaska, Rudolph's nose was not big enough to handle the job. That where Rudolph Nelson came in. Santa took two looks at Nelson and said, "Rudolph Nelson with your NOSE so Big and Bright, would you guide My slay tonight?"well, the rest is history. Rudolph agreed to help work in t he Fried Bread Booth, were he proceeded to scare away little kids. Maybe it was his approach, you know how those old crotchety sailors can be! 2 Page 2 I would like to thank all of you, which have helped and or volunteered the past couple of months with the Food drive, Christmas Fair, and other activities. A special thanks to the Girl Scouts, Soldier's Angles and the Flag wavers for all your help. At our last meeting a few expressed that you would like to help during Baseball season with the Doc Stewart's. Please leave me your name and number and I will be in touch with you. Let us keep up with the membership. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year. Let us start out with a great New Year. Terry Pilson, Commander I would personally like to thank American Legion Post 16 for doing an outstanding job living up to the ideals of the American Legion during the Holiday Season. Not only were there over 300 food boxes delivered to Veterans and their families during the food-drive, Post 16 adopted 4 Families from the Veteran Service Office annual Christmas Veteran Family Adoption program. You can be proud of the way this Post gives back to the community and supports veterans. Rick Sciapiti 1st Vice=Commander Top-Steve Bergadine and Lind work the stove at the Christmas Fair Food booth. US Senator Ron Wyden will present the 60th Year Proclamation of the Korean War at his Town Hall Meeting on Monday January 7th. The event will take place at the Lang Center on the UCC Campus at 10 AM ALL Korean War Veterans are invited 2013 brings new changes to the Veterans Clothes Closet - the American Legion has Tuesdays and Fridays to staff and they request we be open 9am to 3pm. We need volunteers to help. New ideas and rules, but they are all for the good. If you are interested, please call your local Post, or give me a call - Carol Hunt , be glad to answer questions and find some work for you. 3 Page 3 Adjutant Larry Hill Let s take a look back at 2012 and remember some of the activities, projects, and happenings at the Post. For me, the most memorable event was the Post name change. The Post was Umpqua Post 16 and had been since its initial charter granted in However, it was determined that the Post should be renamed in honor of one of the earliest members of the Post, the first Department Commander, the First NEC man, the man responsible for bringing the VA Hospital to Roseburg, his many good works and generous donations. We received a new charter renaming Post 16 in honor of Dr. Stewart. The Post is now Earle B. Stewart Post 16. This was a long overdue honor. Post 16 accepted memorabilia from a fallen soldier s family and it is displayed in the trophy case as a memorial to his memory. Post 16, in conjunction with the Soldier Angels were the driving forces behind a highly successful Memorial Day Picnic for all veterans at Stewart Park. Post 16 and its Auxiliary sponsored three young ladies for Girl s State and two young men for Boys State in June. Post 16, in conjunction with the Soldier Angels, hosted a July Veterans Recognition Picnic. Our slate of Post officers assumed office in April Larry Hill was reelected as Commander, District 9. Corky Smith earned recognition from National as a Gold Brigade Recruiter. That means that he signed up over 50 new members his count was 53. Corky is well on his way to achieving his second Gold Brigade Recruiter designation for American Legion and Soldier Angles volunteers stand for a group photo at the Douglas County Christmas Fair. The volunteers prepared and served food for the three day event which is held annually at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The money earned at the event by the American Legion went to purchase toys for the Adopt a Family for Christmas Program

Per our District Commander Larry Hill, membership dues should be in no later than December. If we can get all our members paid up by December, this will prevent a major administrative mess with National HQ. This is when you continue to get bothersome re-up notices in the mail from National. We know these times are financially tuff for a lot of you. If you have financial difficulties, we can help. We do not want to lose anyone because they cannot pay their dues. Please give me a call in regards to your status, if you need help with your dues, or you plan to leave the Legion. This information is strictly between you and me. At Arms Larry Hill Chaplain Ted Blann Historian VETERANS REMEMBRANCE MEMORIAL VFW Post Commander Mike Eakin and our brothers with the VFW in Roseburg have come up with an awesome project, it's called the Veterans Remembrance Memorial. Mike says any military veteran will be able to purchase a black polished marble plaque with the service member's name, rank, and branch of service and theater of service with picture laserengraved on it. The plaques are $110.00; if you want to have a biography on the database that can be accessed by the QR code located on the plaque, it will be an additional $ Construction on the memorial site is moving right along. If you want to check it out, head down to the VFW Post located at 1127 NE Walnut Street, Roseburg. This will be a great opportunity to purchase a plaque or meet with Mike and get more information, or call Mike at Mon - Thur.
