I have been so fortunate to enjoy a wonderful year in 2017 with all this year s ups and downs my family and friends, especially those in the DAR, remain a true support. For this I am truly blessed. Our final DAR event of the 2017 year was a delightful Christmas luncheon at Giuseppe s. The food was delicious, we enjoyed our close friends and even had time to make connection with members from other chapters and the SAR as well! The speaker was an inspiration for all women to hear. Megaly Aparicio told us her story of world travel, learning of other cultures, and her decision to make the US her home after the heartbreak of losing her young husband. Megaly was positive, energetic, inspiring, and even humorous at times. Many complimented her for sharing her story with us. We begin 2018 with a January meeting that will take us back to Revolutionary War times and the medical practices that aided our brave patriots as they continued the fight for the freedoms that we still profess and stand for today. Bonnie Hupton s brother-in-law, Matthew John Barlow, Jr., M.D., USA COL MC (Ret.), Surgeon General, National Society SAR is visiting us to present this program. In 2018 we will continue to support the programs that fill us with pride. Look through the list of the programs we are involved with, chat with those who chair them and find one you might have an interest in. Here are some ideas: We collect children s books for education Literacy Promotion, Merry Simon Americanism Katherine Tait DAR Service for Veterans Nancy Hewitt These are only a few of the areas we support with our Time, Treasure, and Talent. As the New Year offers us a fresh start you might ask these ladies how you might participate. Sometimes it takes only a bit of your time to join in. The New Year is a great place to start. The museum has an exhibit on the WWI Centennial seen through the eyes of a local Henderson Family. They also have a children's corner.

I visited the museum over Thanksgiving and asked Administrator Mark-Hall Patton to comment about the significance of the exhibit.

2 Commemorative Events: World War I by Dr. Linda Miller Carson McLendon, Cash McLendon, Mark Hall-Patton (Director of Museum), Brandi McLendon, Judge Lee Koury, and Dr. Linda Miller The Centennial of WWI is one of the key Commemorative Events for Clark County Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, Nevada 89002, has an excellent exhibit. The museum has an exhibit on the WWI Centennial seen through the eyes of a local Henderson Family. They also have a children's corner. I would encourage Southern Nevada Chapters to go on a field trip to the museum. Then submit this for a Commemorative Events report. I visited the museum over Thanksgiving and asked Administrator Mark-Hall Patton to comment about the significance of the exhibit. He said: I think that few people understand the impact that World War I had on a small railroad town and mining county in the desert. It really changed our view of who we were and showed that we were indeed a part of the greater world. I hope that many from the Northern Chapters can also visit. Museum hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm 7 days a week. As many as a quarter of the Irish population either starved or attempted immigration under the worst of circumstances. In 1847, the Choctaw nation raised funds to be sent to Ireland.

3 American Indian Minute: Choctaw Tribe Honored in Ireland In the fall of 1845, the potato blight in Ireland began. In the following years the Irish suffered not only from potato blight but also by political policies at the time. Some of the Irish worked in labor camps in order to feed themselves. As many as a quarter of the Irish population either starved or attempted immigration under the worst of circumstances. In 1847, the Choctaw nation raised funds to be sent to Ireland. Despite their own difficulties, they collected funds and forwarded them to a U.S. famine relief organization. Knowing that the Irish were suffering in a way that they could identify with, they were compelled to help. The political situation was similar to that of the Trail Of Tears suffered by the Choctaw people in 1831 when they were forced from their lands and relocated by the government. The Choctaw people donated $170 to contribute to the plight of the Irish, who have never forgotten their generosity. In today s currency that would be thousands of dollars. In 2015, a memorial was erected in Midleton, Ireland, to memorialize this event. The monument is a bowl-shaped structure made of feathers representing the gift of sustenance. Flag Fact Until the Executive Order of June 24, 1912, neither the order of the stars nor the proportions of the flag was prescribed. Consequently, flags dating before this period sometimes show unusual arrangements of the stars and odd proportions, these features being left to the discretion of the flag maker. The principal acts affecting the flag of the United States are the following: Flag Resolution of June 14, stated: "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." Act of January 13, provided for 15 stripes and 15 stars after May Act of April 4, provided for 13 stripes and one star for each state, to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the state s admission. Executive Order of President Taft dated June 24, established proportions of the flag and provided for arrangement of the stars (six horizontal rows of eight each, a single point of each star upward). Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated January 3, provided for the arrangement of the stars (seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically). Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21, provided for the arrangement of the stars (nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically. Wreaths Across America On December 16, 2017 volunteers from many groups including the DAR, CAR, and SAR were on hand to lay wreaths on graves at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The John Ashley Society CAR held a fundraiser for the wreaths and members were on hand to help lay wreaths. The OST donated four wreaths through the CAR for the event.

The ceremony was a thoughtful memorial to those men and women who have served our country. Four local DAR chapters were represented and everyone gathered for a photo (at right). Women s Issues Essay Contest Due 02/01/2018! Now is the time to get excited about the Women s Issues Essay Contest! The Essay contest is a tool to journal women s issues and share personal and professional experiences. The categories are health, career, and family. The contest entry form and essays of past winners can be found on the DAR Members Website. Rules include: 1. Only one essay per member per year will be accepted. Only essays will be accepted. 2. No attachments or pictures will be accepted. 3. Essays must be electronically sent to the State Chair of Women s Issues Committee by 02/01/ Essays must be in a Word document, titled, typed, and with an1,800 word limit (all words count). 5. A cover page including the member s name, chapter, national number, address, telephone number, address, essay title, and category (family, career, or health) must be included. 6. Contest entry form must be sent with the essay. This can be signed electronically and sent as an attachment with the essay file, or you can print it off, sign it, and scan it to your computer, save it and attach it to the essay file. Do not send scanned pictures of your essay documents, or Pdf files. 7. Any submission failing to follow these guidelines will be disqualified. In Memoriam: Patti Royall Our dear DAR sister, Patti Royall, passed away on December 23, 2017. Patti was always involved in the Chapter, whether chairing committees or as an officer.

She constantly reached out to members regarding meetings, events, and service opportunities.

Over a number of months she and I met to gather documents, make copies, find more information, and prepare the actual application.

5 In Memoriam: Patti Royall Our dear DAR sister, Patti Royall, passed away on December 23, Patti was always involved in the Chapter, whether chairing committees or as an officer. She was determined when working on an application for a new member and elated when the new member was inducted into the chapter. She constantly reached out to members regarding meetings, events, and service opportunities. She made it her mission to get new members involved in various committees and made new members feel welcomed into our chapter. We will miss her cheerful spirit and dedication. A tribute to Patti from OST member Nancy Hewitt: I attended an Old Spanish Trail meeting in 2014 as a prospective member. Patti introduced herself and immediately asked if I would like her help with the application process. Of course I replied with Absolutely, Yes! Over a number of months she and I met to gather documents, make copies, find more information, and prepare the actual application. Patti was always positive and cheerful while radiating a love for genealogical research to find those ancestors in order to attain membership in DAR. She knew her way around the application process and had contacts to consult for difficult issues. In December 2015, I received word that I was a member of DAR. I am so thankful that she was my mentor and that I made a really nice friend. In 2017, I introduced a project I was spearheading called Veteran s History Project. Patti immediately jumped right in to help with the interviews. She knew many veterans so she was excited to participate. She was able to complete one video interview of a former neighbor and friend. This made her very happy even though it was a struggle with her voice to do so. Her enthusiasm was undeniable! You would not find another so generous with her time to help others. Rest in Peace Miss Patti! Page 5

Pearl Harbor Commemorative Book by Dr. Linda Miller December 2017 marks the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Last year I coordinated the 75th anniversary trip and took three USS Nevada veterans and one US Army Veteran of WWII. I compiled a photographic book of the event, the history of the ship, and biographies of the men. Sponsorships are still available at a cost of $40. Congressional offices except for Rep. Dina Titus have not been sponsored. Please see her comments on the right. A copy of the book was also donated to The Women Veteran s of Nevada at the November OST meeting. Contact Dr. Linda Miller for details Commemorative Events: Russia by Dr. Linda Miller October marks the 55th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. After traveling to Russia five times on student teacher exchanges, I developed a deep interest in Russian Studies. After my first visit in 1994, I wrote a primary source lesson plan on the Cuban Missile Crisis; it was published by the Organization of American History in its Magazine of History. It was there that I met Dr. Sergei Khrushchev and his wife Valetina Golenko. Having worked closely with the National Atomic Testing Museum (NATM) as a Board Trustee and Education Committee member, I invited him to speak at the museum. He spoke on October 28, 2017, at the NATM and at UNLV. His topic there was on the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Dr. Khrushchev had first spoken at the museum in Unfortunately the time coincided with the Southern Luncheon, so DAR Daughters Dr. Linda Miller, Dr. Sergei Khrushchev and Professor Paul Werth, UNLV were unable to attend this informative and historical lecture. Two Old Spanish Trails! By Bonnie Hupton My husband Jim and I visited my brother and sister-in-law in St. Augustine, Florida, over Thanksgiving.

After the tour we were exploring the area and I saw a huge rock with a plaque on it. I never miss reading information on plaques, so we all went to see what it said.

Here is what I found: The milestone marks the end of the Old Spanish Trail auto highway that once linked San Diego, California and St. Augustine, Florida.

7 Two Old Spanish Trails! By Bonnie Hupton My husband Jim and I visited my brother and sister-in-law in St. Augustine, Florida, over Thanksgiving. One evening we decided to do the Nights of Lights tour, where you ride a small train through the downtown area of the city. Lights are everywhere, more than a million of them! After the tour we were exploring the area and I saw a huge rock with a plaque on it. I never miss reading information on plaques, so we all went to see what it said. The plaque indicated that the spot marked the zero milestone for the Old Spanish Trail. Of course I took pictures, and came home and Googled The Old Spanish Trail in St. Augustine. Here is what I found: The milestone marks the end of the Old Spanish Trail auto highway that once linked San Diego, California and St. Augustine, Florida. The Old Spanish Trail (OST) was an early 20th century auto highway project intended to provide a continuous highway route from California to Florida, linking together the southwestern and southern states. Planning and construction of the OST highway system began in 1915 and the highway was officially opened for travel in The highway s name, the Old Spanish Trail, also pays homage to the Spanish heritage and missions of the southwest and the south. The Old Spanish Trail highway follows what eventually became known as U.S. Highway 80 in the southwest and U.S. Highway 90 in the south. Needless to say in real time that evening I was most surprised, because I thought it referred to our Old Spanish Trail. The information indicates that it is another trail developed in the 1920s with the same name as our chapter. I went to Continental Congress in June to receive the Outstanding State DAR Member Honoring and Thanking Vietnam Veterans for Vicki Kyger, regent of the Valley of Fire Chapter NSDAR, who was unable to attend. Other awards include: Best Single Chapter Event, Best Chapter Publication, Best Multi- Chapter Events, Best State Single Event, Best Chapter Display, Best State Publication, and Largest Number of Vietnam Veterans Honored by a Chapter. 8 OST and Spread the Word Nevada Make News! The November 26, 2017, Parade magazine has an article A Nation of Helpers, in which each state has a paragraph citing an organization in which volunteers help their communities. Spread the Word Nevada is the organization listed for our state! The article states that the organization has donated 4 million books to 467,000 low-income students in the Las Vegas area since its founding in Old Spanish Trail supports Spread the Word Nevada, collecting books every month at the book sale at Paseo Verde Library in Henderson. Literacy chair Merry Simon normally collects books each month. Vivian Surwill and Bonnie Hupton are backups if Merry is out of town on book-sale days. Way to go OST! National Defense Minute The US Coast Guard was established by congress on January 28, Happy! Margaret Corbin was the first woman to be awarded a lifelong pension for her military service. She was wounded after taking over her husband s post in the battle of Fort Washington. She has been reinterred at West Point Cemetery by the New York State DAR Society. Since 1976, when women were admitted into West point, there has been a club bearing her name for cadets to learn about the roles of women in the military. The Corbin Forum s motto is Educate.
