On November 25, 1905, Huber Howe Bancrof signed an agreemen for he sale of his magnificen library o he Regens of he Universiy for a quarer of a million dollars, a he same ime making an ourigh gif of $100,000 oward he purchase price. On November 25, 1955, he Friends of he Bancrof Library gave he Library a rare volume of basic imporance, worhily marking a proud occasion. This "new" book is one of he earlies of Mormon publicaions, as well as he scarces. I is he Book of Commandmens, conaining he "revelaions of God" o Joseph Smih, founder of he Church of Jesus Chris of Laer-Day Sains. I was small, could almos be carried in a ves pocke, and was of such a naure ha i would be used coninually. I was prined on he fronier, a he own called Zion by he Mormons, in This own, beer known as Independence, was he poin of deparure for wesern ravelers in subsequen years. Our copy of he Book of Commandmens is he one ha originally belonged o John Whimer, one of he eigh special winesses o he Book of Mormon. The priceless volume will be on display in he Bancrof Library, and we hope ha many of you will be able o drop in o see i. James K. Moffi, a Regen of he Universiy of California for 36 years, leader in numerous business enerprises of he San Francisco Bay communiy and generous benefacor of he Universiy, died on Augus 16, 1955, aged 86. Mr. Moffi's collecion of incunables was willed o he General Library of he Universiy. Diary of 's Birh SAN FRANCISCO was founded in 1776 by Juan Bauisa de Anza, as is known o mos Californians. Anza, a ough fronier capain who had kep order among Indians and Spanish coloniss on he Sonora-Pimeria Ala fronier for many years, no only had opened a rail overland o California from Sonora in 1774, bu also, in 1776, brough o he new province he coloniss men, women, and children who were o become he firs selers of he new ciy of. Popular wih sudens and ownsfolk alike, he lecured o he larges classes on he campus and was in consan demand as a speaker a off-campus funcions. Sephens was, a ha ime, head of he Universiy's Hisory Deparmen, and one of he mos disinguished members of is faculy. Abou him he gahered a selec group of graduae sudens, apprenices in he profession of hisory, who absorbed his enhusiasm for hisorical sudy, wheher as a hobby or as eachers. One of hese was Francis William Rubke, always known o his friends as "Rip" Rubke, suden of hisory, capain of he baseball eam, and above all a friend of his favorie professor, Henry Morse Sephens. "Rip" Rubke was deoured from he sudy of hisory as a professional, bu, as a business man, he enjoyed more and more he leisure hours wih he manyfinebooks of his library. When he was suddenly sricken in May, 1955, his moher and siser presened his California and Wesern books o he Bancrof Library as a memorial o heir son and broher. Holderman Collecion THE CORRESPONDENCE and papers of Colonel Nelson Miles Holderman, much-decoraed hero of he Firs World War and long-ime Commandan of he Veerans Home of California, have been presened o he Bancrof Library by his widow, Mrs. Marguerie A. Holderman of S. Helena, California. Holderman was born in Hasings, Nebraska, in He was brough as a child o Orange Couny, California, where his faher became a rancher. Joining he California Naional Guard, Holderman rose hrough he enlised ranks and was commissioned. Afer serving under General Pershing on he Mexican border, Holderman wen o France wih he American Expediionary Force as a capain of infanry.
