1 The Beginning of Father's Day Story HOGE HERALD Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church 2016 Story of Fathers Day Historians have recorded that there was a tradition to celebrate Father's Day even thousands of years ago. Their study say that 4,000 years ago in Babylon a son called Elmesu carved a father's day message on a clay card. In his message Elmesu wished his father a long and healthy life. There is no knowledge as to what happened to this father son duo but it is believed that several countries retained the custom of celebrating Father's Day. Genesis of Father's Day in Modern Society The tradition of celebrating Father's Day as seen today originated in the last century. Though there are several people who are credited for furthering the cause of Father's Day, there is far greater acceptance for Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd's contribution. A doting daughter from Spokane, Washington, Ms Dodd is recognized as the Founder or Mother of the Father's Day Festival. Inception of the Father's Day took place in Sonora's mind when she happened to hear a Mother's Day sermon in Sonora, who was 27 then, had begun to recognize the hardships her father must have gone through while bringing up his six children alone. When Sonora was 16, her mother had died during childbirth. Sonora's father a Civil War veteran by the name of William Jackson Smart raised six children including the newborn on his own. Sonora questioned that if there is a day to recognize mothers then why is not there a day to honor fathers? Many people laughed and joked at Sonora's idea. But her will did not droop. She began a sincere campaign lobbying for the cause of Father's Day. Her hard work began to show signs of success when Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, 1910 with the support of Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). To pay tribute to her affectionate father, Sonora wished that Father's Day be celebrated on her father's birthday on June 5, but it so happened that there was not enough time for preparation and the day came to be celebrated on third Sunday in the month of June. The noble idea of celebrating Father's Day became quite popular in US so much so that President Woodrow Wilson approved of the festival in President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea but it was President Lyndon Johnson who signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Fathers Day Celebration in Present Time June Father's Day has become a hugely popular festival. World over people thank their father and pay tribute to them. Most commonly children gift Father's Day cards and flowers to their father. Neckties are a popular gift on the occasion of Father's Day. Due to the tradition of giving gifts, cards makers, florists and gift sellers campaign for Father's Day Festival in a big way and cash in on the sentiments of the people.

The annual presbytery-wide mission work trip is scheduled for the week of October to work with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance in Georgetown, South Carolina. The Georgetown Presbyterian Church will be hosting this work project created to assist in flood recovery from the damages of the fall 2015 flooding in South Carolina. There will be space for adult volunteer workers from our presbytery congregations. To reserve a space on the mission team, Dagmar@psvonline.org. More information will be available soon. If you are interested in joining us and have questions, please SUNDAY FLOWER DEDICATIONS Did you know that if you would like to dedicate flowers used on the altar on Sunday's, you can place a note and envelope with the information in collection plate on Sunday for a future (Sunday) date? The 2 flower arrangements are made up and delivered to the Church by Hoffman's Flowers and cost $30.00 each week. If there are not any special dedications, the funds come from the churches expenses. If you interested in helping the Deacon's out with Flower deliveries, please let the Deacon's know. I wanted to share with the congregation of Hoge, an event that I am participating in. Through my work at OSU, I met Keely Croxten and Steven Hurt. I asked one day about a shirt Steven was wearing that said Tour de H2O. I ll continue this story in their words. Starting with a wedding and continuing now for the 7 th year, the Tour de H2O raises funds to assist extremely poor rural communities in East Africa to construct life-giving water wells. This event began with a desire for our wedding to be a bit different as we didn t need nor want traditional wedding gifts. After raising funds in lieu of gifts and constructing 2 wedding wells in rural Kenya in 2009, we followed up by a honeymoon trip to visit these wells and the people they serve. Our lives were forever changed by the immensity of the human suffering we witnessed. When we returned from that trip we started Tour de H2O. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of many Central Ohioans, the Tour de H2O has funded a long list of water supply projects in both Kenya and Uganda, positively impacting thousands of people in immeasurable ways. I read more about how they go about doing this work. They partnered with Global Partners for Development because this organization uses local workers and resources as much as they can. They also put into place a structure that sees that wells are maintained and problems are addressed when they arise. Other water related projects include things such as hand washing stations, elevated water storage tanks, and composting latrines. I am walking in the Tour de H on June 4, 2016 at Darby Creek. You can walk or bike, and I chose to walk. I am excited to meet others who have joined in this work, celebrating what has been accomplished, and what will happen next. The funds from this year s event will be used to construct much needed water wells for primary schools in Western Kenya. Gail Garman, Worship Committee co-chair. TWO LITTLE BOYS A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were excessively mischievous. The two were always getting into trouble and their parents could be assured that if any mischief occurred in their town their two young sons were in some way involved. The parents were at their wits end as to what to do about their sons' behavior. The mother had heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children in the past, so she asked her husband if he thought they should send the boys to speak with the clergyman. The husband said, 'We might as well. We need to do something before I really lose my temper!' The clergyman agreed to speak with the boys, but asked to see them individually. The 8 year old went to meet with him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him sternly, 'Where is God?' The boy made no response, so the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner tone, 'Where is God?' Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face, 'WHERE IS GOD?' At that the boy bolted from the room and ran directly home, slamming himself in the closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and asked what had happened. The younger brother replied, 'We are in BIG trouble this time. God is missing and they think we did it.' 4 Updates and Reminders Martha Muses (We meet the second Tuesday of each month except July and August) We postponed the bible study again this month to continue steps in forming a prayer shawl ministry to our circle meetings. Dorothy Aiken was at the meeting once again to over see our progress. Since we will not be having meetings for the next couple of months we can work on the project at home and possibly have some finished shawls when we return in September. We have had two ladies who don t come to every circle meeting offer to make prayer shawls to add to our mission. If any other people would like to do the same let me know (rectorjoyce@sbcglobal.net) or through the church office. We have been offering some pastoral care, but also see the ways in which you take good care of one another: the church being the church. Session meetings are an opportunity for me to appreciate the strength and perseverance of your leadership, and I see God working through you all powerfully! The monthly HM3 events that we participate in are getting smoother, and your support and guidance for those have been enormously helpful. In short, we are grateful for our connection and for you! I will be away from work on sabbatical from June 19 - August 13, but our associate pastor Katie Kinnison will be on call, and will moderate your July session meeting. Grace and peace, Tracy Out Of The Box Community Theatre The next production for OOTBCT is Don t Talk To The Actors. This show is another comedy. The best laid plans go awry when the cast and crew of a Broadwaybound play resort to manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandon to get what they want. Fledgling playwright Jerry Przpezniak and his fiancee are a couple of Buffalo greenhorns suddenly swept up in the whirlwind of New York's theater scene when Jerry's play is optioned for the big money, ego-driven world of Broadway. It's a young playwright's dream, but the crazy characters and dilemmas they encounter are the things theatrical nightmares are made of. It will run for two weekends: June 3, 4, 5 and June 10, 11, 12. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees begin at 3:00 pm. A contributing factor has been a reduction of staff costs. The commitment of those covering the responsibilities of the office is greatly appreciated. We continue to evaluate each of our administrative and operating expenses while making attempts to cut where possible. We recently had our parking lot sealed and striped. The materials and labor were donated to the church as part of our first year s agreement with Westgate BusinessWorks and Daryl Hennessy. This is an agreement to allow our parking lot to be available for overflow parking for a new café/restaurant which will soon be opening on Westmoor Avenue when necessary. This is an exciting opportunity for the west side! We will soon have Durable Slate here to repair the recent damage to our slate roof due to strong winds. The issues with our lighted sign are still being evaluated. Hoge welcomes another AA group meeting on Friday evenings. If you are not currently participating in any of the activities at Hoge, please prayerfully consider your willingness to do so. We have unique mission and outreach occurring here which is not happening anywhere else. You have to experience it to understand it! God is calling each of us to do our part to keep Hoge alive, providing mission and outreach to our community. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. In a food processor or blender, combine the black beans, eggs, melted butter, cocoa powder, vanilla, and sugar. Blend until smooth. Pour the batter into the greased dish. Sprinkle chocolate chips and nuts over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes. Page 6

Liquid dish soap (any brand), Empty spray bottle. Put salt in the empty spray bottle and fill it the rest of the way up with white vinegar. Add a squirt of liquid dish soap. This solution works best if you use it on a hot day. Spray it on the weeds in the morning, and as it heats up it will do its work. (I mix the whole recipe in the vinegar bottle then put it in the spray bottle Don t get the spray on good grass or flower beds) Page 7
