1 HOGE HERALD Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church 2017 May Mother s Day and the Christian Connection. Celebration of Mothers over the centuries has appeared in varying forms and traditions since and possibly before Roman times. In the 1600s the Church of England instigated Mothering Sunday in recognition of Mary the Mother of Jesus. Later this religious celebration was expanded to include honoring all mothers. As time passed, this celebration slowly disappeared from the church calendar. The seed for Mother s Day that we celebrate today had its beginning in 1858 with Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis a Christian lady who was working to heal the nation after the Civil War. Her strategy was to promote and elevate the important role of mothers and help them to create healthier and more hygienic homes. From this she instigated a Mothers Friendship Day which eventually developed into a national movement called Mothers Friendship Clubs. At these clubs Ann would teach the mothers basic nursing and safe sanitation practices to be used in the home, which she had learned from her brother who was a famous M.D. This resulted in many lives being saved and by offering this service to both sides of those involved in the Civil War it was instrumental in facilitating the reconciliation process between Union and Confederate neighbors. When Ann Marie Jarvis passed away after a long illness, one of her two daughters, Anna decided to dedicate her life to her mother s dream of a Mother s Day to honor all mothers around the world. Anna missed her mother greatly and felt children often neglected to appreciate their mother enough while the mother was still alive. As a Sunday school teacher for twenty years at her church, she was very aware of the Fifth of the Ten Commandments, Honor your father and mother and no doubt would have taught this to her students. She shared her desire to bring to fruition her mother s dream and it was readily accepted by her friends. The first such service was held at her church and she handed out her mother s favorite flower, the White Carnation. At first, people observed Mother s Day by attending church and writing letters to their mothers. After much letter writing and lobbying the Governors of Oklahoma and West Virginia in 1910 proclaimed the Second Sunday in May to be celebrated as Mother s Day. The acceptance of this celebration throughout the USA was breath taking. By 1911 there was not one state in the USA that did not have its own observance of Mother s Day. On May 9th 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, proclaimed the Second Sunday in May as Mother s Day and a national holiday. It was not long before the Mother s Day celebration was embraced by other nations as far away as Japan, China, Africa, South America and some Asian countries. Within ten years, the rapid commercialization and exploitation of this sacred and joyous celebration for Mothers caused Anna much grief. She went on to spend her inheritance fighting against the abuse of this Christian based celebration and said that she wished she would never have started the day because it became so out of control Despite Anna Jarvis s misgivings, Mother s Day has flourished all around the world. In the USA the Second Sunday in May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and the telephone lines record their highest traffic. However let us not forget the original intention as set out by God to celebrate and honor the mothers in our families, in our churches and in our society. Complied by: Graham McDonald

2 Special Announcements A Message From the Deacons A big thank you to everyone who came to the pancake breakfast on Palm Sunday, and/or donated to it. Thanks as well to the people who are not Deacons, but helped us out in the kitchen. It made a difference. It was a very enjoyable breakfast and we ended up with $ in donations. All of the donations will go to the Deacon's Fund. Donna Swaneck, Chairperson, Board of Deacons. KEEP IN DAILY PRAYER -Rev. Provide the church office with prayer requests for inclusion of Keep in Daily Prayer sections of the weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters either by phone or Special Thank You Received Congregations of the PSV joined forces with Presbytery Disaster Assistance to support the efforts and cost of providing a new roof on a home which the group worked on during its mission trip to South Carolina this past October. Dave Colborn personally worked on this house. Due to many complications, the work was not able to be completed during the week which we were there. The participating congregations committed to do what they could to ensure a roof would be placed on this family s home. Hoge supported this project. In March, we received a thank you for these funds as the house now has a proper roof. Debbie and Gregg, the homeowners, and PDA appreciate this gift. We received the following note of thanks from Sue Mathews, sight coordinator for the area which we worked. To the members of Hoge Memorial Church, Thank you so much for your contribution of $1,000 to help pay for the new roof on Debbie & Gregg s house. The work PDA is important and we are grateful for people like you, who have helped in this way. Blessings, Sue Mathews Sunday Flower Dedication Did you know that if you would like to dedicate flowers used on the altar on Sunday's, you can place a note and envelope with the information in collection plate on Sunday for a future (Sunday) date? The 2 flower arrangements are made up and delivered to the Church by Hoffman's Flowers and cost $30.00 each week. If there are not any special dedications, the funds come from the churches expenses. The flowers can be dedicated in the memory of Family and/or Friends or in Honor of Family and/or Friends. If you dedicate the flowers, please let the Deacon's know if you want to take one arrangement home with you on the Sunday, when you dedicate flowers. The Deacon's try to deliver the flower arrangements to the Shut-Ins and the ill who we refer to as the Family Visitation, who may not be able to attend church that often. The Upper Room Daily Devotional Guide is available free to the congregation. Page 2

4 Updates and Reminders Martha Muses We had a small gathering but the meeting went on as usual with an interesting Bible Study on the life of Esther...I had a "my bad" moment, I was supposed to be hostess but I didn't bring goodies (there was something bothering me all day about the meeting and that was it). The next will be May 9 at 7:00. Mommy A little girl was in church with her mother when she started feeling ill. "Mommy," she said, "can we leave now?" "No," her mother replied. "Well, I think I have to throw up!" "Then go out the front door and around to the back of the church and throw up behind a bush." After about 60 seconds the little girl returned to her seat. "Did you throw up?" Mom asked. "Yes." "How could you have gone all the way to the back of the church and returned so quickly?" "I didn't have to go out of the church, Mommy. They have a box next to the front door that says, 'For the Sick.'" Spring is here and it will soon be time to clean out and prepare the flower beds and planters around Hoge. The colorful tulips, lillies and daisys have already started to bloom and were beautiful to see on Easter morning! The beds on the north side of the parking lot have been cleaned up and maintained in loving memory of Fran Gorman by her family. She always enjoyed fresh flowers and I like to think that when the flowers are opening up and blowing in the wind, it is mom's way of saying hello to all of us. Susan Barrett oversees the clean up and maintenance of the beds and planters on the south end, in front of the church, and along the west entrance. Susan also spends time ensuring that all beds and planters are kept watered throughout the spring, summer and fall. Donations of time cleaning/planting/weeding as well as financial resources for perineals and general supplies are always welcome. (see bottom of page 5 for a look at Hoge s gardens) Page 4
