1 HOGE HERALD The Story of Pentecost Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church 2016 May When the day of Pentecost came, the Apostles were all together in one place. It was ten days after Jesus had gone back to heaven. Before he had left them, He had made a promise. "The Holy Spirit will come to you. He will give you power to tell people about me." For ten days, the Apostles and some other followers of Jesus had stayed together, praying and waiting. But now the great day had come! Suddenly, a noise like a strong wind filled the whole house and the followers saw something that looked like flames of fire, falling on each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages. At that time Jerusalem was full of Jewish visitors from all over the world. They were all surprised, because each one of them heard the Apostles speaking in his own language. They were completely amazed at this. They said, "Look! Aren't all these men that we hear speaking from Galilee?... But we hear these men telling in our own languages about the great things God has done!" But others made fun of the Apostles, saying, "They have drunk too much wine." But Peter stood up with the eleven apostles. In a loud voice he spoke to the crowd: "Listen to me. Pay attention to what I have to say. These men are not drunk, as you think; it is only nine o'clock in the morning!" Then Peter made a long speech, telling the crowds all about Jesus. That day, about 3,000 people became followers of Jesus and were baptised. They spent the rest of their time in Jerusalem learning all about Jesus from the Apostles before returning home. And the Apostles continued to meet together to pray and to break bread. Mothers Day History Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher.

SUNDAY FLOWER DEDICATIONS Did you know that if you would like to dedicate flowers used on the altar on Sunday's, you can place a note and envelope with the information in collection plate on Sunday for a future (Sunday) date? The 2 flower arrangements are made up and delivered to the Church by Hoffman's Flowers and cost $30.00 each week. If there are not any special dedications, the funds come from the churches expenses. The flowers can be dedicated in the memory of Family and/or Friends or in Honor of Family and/or Friends. If you dedicate the flowers, please let the Deacon's know if you want to take one arrangement home with you on the Sunday, when you dedicate flowers. The Deacon's try to deliver the flower arrangements to the Shut-Ins and the ill who we refer to as the Family Visitation, who may not be able to attend church that often, to let them know the Church Members/and Friends that attend the Church Service are thinking of them and want to cheer them up. We can also give the flowers out to someone that attends Hoge who is having a special celebration, such as a birthday, or anniversary, if we are made aware of it, depending on who is currently ill and needing cheered up with the flowers. During the Easter and Christmas Holidays, we also have special Flower dedications where Friends or Church Members that attend the Church Service can dedicate potted flowers, at Easter (Spring Easter Flowers) or Christmas (Live poinsettia's) to the Memory of a loved one(s) or friend(s) or family members. The potted flowers are then delivered to the Hoge Family and Visitation list, unable to attend church, by the Deacons. If you would be interested in helping the Deacon's out with Flower deliveries, please let the Deacon's know. The Deacons currently are Doug Alter, Susan Barrett, Carolyn Colborn, Kay Moore, Beth Ormsby and Donna Swaneck A note from Finance and Facilities Finance and Facilities committee will be doing some spring cleaning next month beginning with room 9 (at the top of the stairs). If you have any personal items in that room, please remove them as soon as possible. Contact Janet Fetherolf if you have any questions. Page 2

4 KEEP IN DAILY PRAYER -Juanita Deweese, St. Ann s Hospital Rm. 315 Updates and Reminders Martha Muses (We meet the second Tuesday of each month except July and August) We changed to meeting around a bit as a beginning process for an additional part of the Martha Circle. We are taking baby steps into organizing a prayer shawl mission as part of our circle. After a shot business meeting Dorothy Aiken started a lesson in crocheting. The reactions of the ladies was mixed. Some feel they might rather knit so we may be including knitting needles along with crochet hooks. Another thought she may like to try making a cloth prayer shawl. It looks like we are going to have a mixture of styles. We are getting ideas for other prayer items. We are just beginning. It also looks like we will need Dorothy for a few more lessons. We had some refreshment while enjoying the new adventure and each other. Your are welcome to join us at our next meeting on May 10 at 7:00pm Other -Altha Martin, Pat Newman, Doug Alter, Marge Kennedy, Pat Borror, Marianne & Carl Black, Bud Dorn, Wilbur Smith, Kay Moore, Janet Mullens, Ann Adair, Judy Isel -Hoge Church: continued support for community-based ministries. - Our city, nation, and world leaders. Our schools, teachers and children. Please help keep this list current. Provide the church office with prayer requests for inclusion of Keep in Daily Prayer sections of the weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters either by phone or We could use help at the publishing time of the newsletter. For most occasions it would be the Friday after the newsletter deadline. During the holiday seasons the dates could be moved by a few days. We need help with folding, attaching seals, attaching address labels and applying the postage stamps. Depending on the number of people that we would have for help it could around an hour and generally around 10:30am. Out Of The Box Community Theatre The next production for OOTBCT is Don t Talk To The Actors. This show is another comedy. The best laid plans go awry when the cast and crew of a Broadway-bound play resort to manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandon to get what they want. Fledgling playwright Jerry Przpezniak and his fiancee are a couple of Buffalo greenhorns suddenly swept up in the whirlwind of New York's theater scene when Jerry's play is optioned for the big money, ego-driven world of Broadway. It's a young playwright's dream, but the crazy characters and dilemmas they encounter are the things theatrical nightmares are made of. It will run for two weekends: June 3, 4, 5 and June 10, 11, 12 Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinees begin at 3:00 pm. General admission - $12.00; Seniors and students - $10.00 Hoge s Music, Message, Meal Ministry (HM3) - If you are interested in donating to personal pantry call Robin Wilson at For helping with the meal call Mike Minch HM3 numbers for April Adults 31; Children 5; Covenant Volunteers 14; Hoge Volunteers 2 One scene from the recent comedy Out of the Box Community Theatre plays Drinking Habits. 5 The following is a summary of Hoge s current year financial activity through March Detailed financial reports are available by request to the church office. Designated Offerings / Donations during 2016: Deacon s Funds: $2, (includes donations from Worthington Presbyterian, Glenwood UM Church) Parking Lot/Building Maintenance Fund: $1.23 (interest earned from designated savings account) Ed & Lois Sensenbrenner Pastoral Care & Leadership Fund: $10, HM3 / Personal Care Pantry: $ (includes support from Westminster Presbyterian) One Great Hour of Sharing: $1, Financial notes: We continue to have a positive bottom line of operations after our first three months of the year! A contributing factor has been a reduction or staff costs. The commitment of those covering the responsibilities of the office is greatly appreciated. We continue to evaluate each of our administrative and operating expenses while making attempts to cut where possible. We recently experienced some damage to our slate roof due to strong winds which will need to be taken care of. We are seeking estimates for this need. We also have been experiencing some problems with our electric access to our lighted sign. Fred Mapes has been working on analyzing the cause of the issue so it can be resolved. Hoge has entered into an agreement with Westgate BusinessWorks. This agreement will provide the use of part of our parking lot for overflow parking to a new restaurant/cafe which will be opening up soon on Westmoor Ave. The resources received from this agreement will be reserved for ongoing maintenance costs of our parking lot. When the restaurant opens, please consider checking it out and supporting the economic development occurring in our neighborhood! Beginning in May, Hoge will welcome another AA group which will be meeting on Friday evenings 6 to 8 pm. If you are not currently participating in any of the activities at Hoge, please prayerfully consider your willingness to do so. We have unique mission and outreach occurring here which is not happening anywhere else. You have to experience it to understand it! God is calling each of us to do our part to keep Hoge alive, providing mission and outreach to our community. Please consider your prayerful, physical, and financial support during 2016 and for Hoge s future.
