1 HOGE HERALD Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church 2018 July Honor Your Mother and Your Father by Don Wilton from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association When God issued this commandment to Moses on Mount Sinai, He demonstrated His sovereign plan for real relationships. How grand to be reminded of the wonderful truth concerning His invitation for all people to have a personal relationship with Him. Herein lies the hallmark of our Christian faith. In response to the love of the Father, Jesus Christ gave His life on the cross so that all sinners might believe in Him. This relationship comes when we repent of our sin before a holy and righteous God, confess that sin to the Lord Jesus Christ, and then trust in Him by faith. What God demands of all those who have been brought into this personal relationship with Him is simple and clear: We are to honor Him. And just as we are to honor the One who created us, so we are to honor those who were chosen to carry out God s plan for our creation our fathers and mothers! God designed parent-child relationships to be among the most vital of all human relationships. This may be why He spoke not only of honor, but also attached the promise of long life to His command in Exodus 20:12: Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. In Proverbs 6:20-23, God s Word tells us to pay attention to our fathers and to listen to our mothers. We are to hold their instructions in our hearts and tie them around our necks. In return, we receive guidance, protection, teaching and discipline four ingredients no one can afford to live without. This command is certainly not a simple suggestion from God! It is a very serious exhortation to all of us. God s command to honor our parents is consistent with His divine order. He knows what is best for us. He loves us. He made us. That is why He issues this command and connects this promise into His basic plan for mankind. Just as we will live forever because we honor the Lord our God, so it is that we are given the promise of a well-lived, fruitful and happy life when we honor our parents. The promise of a long life is the promise of God s lifelong protection, guidance, deliverance and provision. Surely, there is hardly anything more precious than living in a loving relationship with your parents. In fact, you did not choose your parents. God did. And His design is for you to live your entire life in a continual state of honor and blessing. Just as all believers give honor to almighty God and receive bountiful joy in return, so it is that children who give honor to their parents receive boatloads of joy in return. It is the law of God! Both my wife and I can bear testimony to this divine fact. So, permit me to give you what I call the Seven Keys to Honoring Parents. 1) Value your parents world. No matter how old they are, they are living in a world that is highly relevant and valuable to them. 2) Respect your parents age. Don t mock their limitations and inabilities. Love them in it. 3) Model your parents godly attributes. You know the many things they said and did that simply blessed your life, so go and do likewise! It honors them and the Lord. Besides, if it blessed you, just think how much it will bless their grandchildren. 4) Protect your parents individual dignity. The older they become, the more they will cherish your hedge of protection. Remember, they protected you when you were just starting out! 5) Fulfill your parents essential joy. Make it your business to find out what gives them joy. Sometimes it is as simple as a regular phone call and please answer their calls. It makes their day. 6) Provide for your parents basic needs. Make certain you are not feasting at the king s table while your precious parents are living on cans of baked beans! And, by the way, make sure they are eating right. 7) Just do it: Honor your God-given responsibility. Just do it. God said it. You will be so glad you did.

Flea market items Toys Books Games Puzzles Clothing Jewelry The Hair Cut-A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car." The boy thought about that for a moment, decided, he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut." The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair." (You're going to love the Dad's reply!) "Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went? 4 Updates and Reminders Memories of Hoge and Community This article is by Rev. Ed Sensenbrenner We continue in the Sandbox Room (probably the Kindergarten Room) through I do not remember who any of the teachers were in that room. But I do remember that they had these little preschool chairs in that room, and when we sat down, my feet did not hit the floor. I remember longing for the day when I would be tall enough that my feet would touch the floor! That day finally came!! By1938 we were promoted to the primary department. All who were my age started to public school in Jan in the first grade. (The Columbus Schools had mid-year classes in those days. If your birth date was between Nov. and April, you started to first grade in Jan. Twelve years later, you graduated from High School in Jan.) Also there was no public school Kindergarten in those days; so you started to school in the first grade. Dick Wolfe went to John Burroughs Elementary on Sullivant Ave. Bill McCrady and I went to West Broad Elementary. In the Primary Department at Hoge, Catherine Sperry Hakola was the Superintendent; her older sister, Bess Sperry, assisted her. The Primary Department met in a large room in the basement of the church. We met for Opening Exercises in this room; the girls seated on the left and the boys on the right. After opening exercises, we broke for our small classes, boys and girls still separate. This pattern continued clear thorough High School. The boys sat in small circles, divided into First, Second and Third grade with a woman teacher teaching you the lesson, which I assume were stories from the Bible. The girls also sat in small circles on the other side of the large assembly room I remember that Mrs. White and Mrs. Daniels were two of the three teachers we boys had. I do not remember who the third teacher. Opening Exercises consisted of singing some Sunday School songs and listening to the Superintendent read the scripture lesson for the day. Back then (in the 30's and 40's and 50's ) most denominations used the Uniform Lesson Series which had the same Scripture Lesson for all grades, Primary through Adult. The explanations (teaching material) were adjusted to the different age levels. In the late 1950's the Presbyterian Church finally published different teaching materials for each age level, called The Christian Faith & Life Curriculum. One incident stands out in my mind from my days in the Primary Department at Hoge. One Sunday I must have been talking way to much to my friends and not paying attention to my teacher, when the superintendent, Mrs. Hakola, came over the grabbed me by my ear; lifted me right out of my seat; marched me out of the Primary Department, up the stairs to the first floor, right into an Adult Fidelis Class, where my father was teaching the class. There was an empty seat right in front of the podium behind which my father was teaching. She sat me down in that seat still twisting my ear very hard, turned around and walked out of the room without saying a word. My ear really hurt! I do not remember my mother or my father saying anything about that to me afterwards. They must have thought my humiliation and red ear were enough punishments! Next month, I want to tell you a wonderful story about the Sperry Sisters that took place in Depression years of 1930 and I did not learn about it until the 1990's. Whether they are called Prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, Peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient.... Thus, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God! Page 4

Place the cans in a pot large enough to submerge the cans in water. Bring to a low boil. Cover, reduce heat & low boil for about 3 hours. Add water as needed to keep the cans submerged. Carefully remove cans from water, cool for about 10 minutes. Open carefully with a can opener. Pour the caramel in the crust & smooth mixture to touch each sides of pie crust. At this point you can either freeze for at least 3 hours or refrigerate overnight. Remove from freezer/refrigerator, spread cool whip on pie. It is a good idea to place back in freezer or refrigerator so the topping has time to set. Garnish with caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, chocolate shavings. Briarwood Presbyterian Church Page 6

Fold them up, a little longer than the tubes, and place them in the center. 2. Store folded bed sheets inside a pillow case. 3. Store cupcake papers in Mason jars. 4. Organize scarves by tying them around the bottom of a hanger. 5. Use egg cartons to store fragile decorations. 6. Keep hair ties & barrettes neat with toilet paper tubes. 7. Store matches in a Mason jar, & place a sandpaper disk over the top for striking. 8. Place a tension rod under your kitchen sink to store spray bottles. Keep your spray bottles organized and keep the shelf space for other things. 9. Keep sweaters on the hangers with rubber bands. Place them over the ends of your hangers to keep sweaters and silky fabrics from falling off. 10. Simmer orange peels & cloves in a pot on the stove to release a wonderful scent that cleans the air and fills it with a beautiful homey scent. 11. Use a fork for garlic! Press the garlic against a cutting board with a fork & you have an instant garlic press. 12. Crystal clear ice cubes? Boil your water! 13. Clean your wooden cutting boards easily. A half of a lemon and a handful of sea salt is all it takes to clean your favorite cutting boards. Sprinkle sea salt over the board, then scrub with a half of a lemon, cut side down. 14. Tired of bugs in your glass in the summer? Use a muffin paper! 15. Freeze grapes to chill your wine in the glass. 16.To keep a pan from boiling over, put a wooden spoon in. 16. Ketchup cleans copper bottomed pots. 17. When cutting soft bread, flip it over! 18. Use a potato to remove broken light bulbs. 19. Remove indentations from carpeting. Simply place ice cubes along the marks & let them melt and dry. 20. Use toothpaste to get the perfect marks for picture hanging, a dot of toothpaste on the frame where you need the nail, then press it onto the wall. 21. Keep tape ends from sticking back to the roll with toothpicks. 22. Take a piece of plain white chalk & rub it over the grease stains. 23. Keep drips to a minimum when painting with a simple rubber band. Place a wide rubber band across the opening to your paint can so you can rub the brush off on it and avoid drips. Page 7
