1 APPALACHIAN OUTREACH, INC. Annual Report MISSION STATEMENT: Helping to relieve the burden of poverty and disaster. Guided by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and inspired by the Holy Spirit, the mission of Appalachian Outreach, Inc. will be to help relieve the burden of poverty and the loss of dignity suffered by the people of Appalachia who through no fault of their own struggle to meet the basic needs of daily life. We will continually look for contacts in Counties where accessibility and opportunity are limited and other charitable agencies are lacking or struggle to meet local need. We will also look for contacts locally that will support the mission of Appalachian Outreach, Inc. therefore building a network where the dignity of all is respected and the love of God is proclaimed through prayer, word, and deed. All of this was accomplished with the help of 6,100 volunteers working well over 90,500 hours! In 2017, we helped 34,576 families consisting of 87,952 individuals. You will never realize the difference you have made to those in need! Well done everyone! We still need more volunteers! Growth from the Web AOI continues to receive donations of new and gently used items from individuals, schools and businesses. One of the wonders of last year was the tremendous outreach of several web-based groups that knit and crochet. They represent 35 states and 4 foreign countries. These groups have provided hundreds of handmade baby items, lap robes, mittens, socks, shawls, and hats. These items were placed in the Baby Bonus Baskets and with the Christmas Gift bags. Those receiving the items are so thrilled that someone cares and so happy to receive a beautiful new item made with such love. 2 2017 Our Turn This past year we supported disaster relief work locally and throughout WV. Heavy flooding hit our own Marshal County in June and July The city of McMechen sustained heavy damage. So did other areas of Marshall, Ohio and Wetzel Counties. This is one of several bridges that floods destroyed. Eight Families are still stranded. AOI Delivery of clean up supplies to Community Lutheran Partners for local distribution. Since our beginning, AOI has deliverer disaster supplies to many areas of WV. In 2017 members of WVVOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster), UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), Greenbrier LTRG (Long Term Recovery Group), MCFRN (Marshall County Family Resource Network, and CLP (Community Lutheran Partners to name a few, brought supplies to our warehouse so we could prepare for potential river flooding locally and in the northern part of the state. Many local Churches, businesses and individuals also donated items or money. This collaboration makes preparation, response and recovery so much quicker and more effective! 3 Thoughts from the Executive Director Poverty and disasters continue to plague West Virginia. In our short history of 17 years, we have made 940 trips, traveling thousands of miles delivering 3,487.4 tons of much needed building supplies, appliances, furniture, house wares, toys, baby care items and Christmas Gifts. I was just researching material at American Fact Finder and found some interesting information. Think about this: The US median income is $55,322. The median income for WV is $42,644 which ranks 47 th in the US. We have four of the top 100 poorest counties when looking at median income. They are McDowell County 5 th at $24,460, Webster 70 th at $30,758, Mingo 75 th at $ 30,638 and Summers at $ 31,458. What a difference! The Appalachian Region, which contains all of West Virginia, continues to struggle and suffer. 17.7% of West Virginians live in poverty. It is worse in eastern Kentucky (18.8%). To say the least, this organization has grown beyond my wildest dreams! Yet, I continue to dream of what we can do statewide and locally with the continued support of everyone. Whether it is as a volunteer (we had 414 for 7,741 hours last year) a donor, financial supporter, or an employee, together we can truly make a difference for those who need us the most. ~ Rose Hart, Executive Director Greatest Needs A new warehouse / Storehouse or property to build on. AOI has a Capital Fund set up for this. Donations are always welcome Other needs- Volunteers to sort and pack donations. Drivers to help with pickups and deliveries. No CDL required. We have been able to assist thousands of people over these 17 years through the groups we deliver to. In the areas we serve, many people are one-step away from poverty. A sickness, a disaster, a loss of employment or underemployment can be the last straw. 4 Something to Think About We are so grateful for all those who believe in our mission and work. Your thoughts, kind words, prayers, financial support and donations are so encouraging! I wish all of you could be a fly on the wall to see what joy and hope you give to so many who are struggling to survive. We invite you to continue or to begin being a partner with us at Appalachian Outreach. Our Helpers From Near and Afar Many groups come to AOI through the Appalachian Institute at Wheeling Jesuit University. These groups of high school, college age and adults are in the area for an Appalachian experience. Besides giving hours of service, they also visit many areas around the state to understand better the challenges and needs of the area. We are so grateful to WJU for collaborating with us for service. Our regular volunteers are always renewed by the energy these groups bring and their interest in the mission of AOI. Groups from Churches throughout the East also join us. Thank you all!
