1 HOGE HERALD Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church 2017 June His Life's Work When his wife died, the baby was two. They had six other children - three boys and three girls, ranging in age from 4 to 16. A few days after he became a widower, the man's parents and his deceased wife's parents came to visit. "We've been talking," they said, "about how to make this work. There's no way you can take care of all these children and work to make a living. So, we've arranged for each child to be placed with a different uncle and aunt. We're making sure that all of your children will be living right here in the neighborhood, so you can see them anytime..." "You have no idea how much I appreciate your thoughtfulness," the man responded. "But I want you to know," he smiled and continued, "If the children should interfere with my work, or if we should need any help, we'll let you know." Over the next few weeks the man worked with his children, assigning them chores and giving them responsibilities. The two older girls, aged 12 and 10, began to cook and do the laundry and household chores. The two older boys, 16 and 14, helped their father with his farming. But then another blow. The man developed arthritis. His hands swelled, and he was unable to grip the handles of his farm tools. The children shouldered their loads well, but the man could see that he would not be able to continue in this vein. He sold his farming equipment, moved the family to a small town and opened a small business. The family was welcomed into the new neighborhood. The man's business flourished. He derived pleasure from seeing people and serving them. Word of his pleasant personality and excellent customer service began to spread. People came from far and wide to do business with him. And the children helped both at home and at work. Their father's pleasure in his work brought satisfaction to them, and he drew pleasure from their successes. The children grew up and got married. Five of the seven went off to college, most after they were married. Each one paid his or her own way. The children's collegiate successes were a source of pride to the father. He had stopped at the sixth grade. Then came grandchildren. No one enjoyed grandchildren more than this man. As they became toddlers, he invited them to his workplace and his small home. They brought each other great joy. Finally, the youngest daughter - the baby, who had been two years old at her mother's death - got married. And the man, his life's work completed, died. This man's work had been the lonely but joyful task of raising his family. This man was my father. I was the 16- year-old, the oldest of seven. by: Wyverne Flatt, Chicken Soup for the Soul at Work

Both Patti Gorman and Judy Manley are part of the cast! Note from Kay I had DR/Clinic appointment last Friday and unexpectly my liver count enzymes were elevated. It could be anything causing from medication or Graft VS Host disease (stem cell rejection). DR put me on 60mg of steroids a day and wanted me back today to see what the steroids were doing and for cat scan of my liver and surrounding area (pancreas, right kidney, and gall bladder), Technician said it would take 2 or 3 days before I would hear something from the DR. I went to Clinic and todays bloodwork looked much better. They decreased my steroids as of tomorrow to 40mg and I return in two weeks 9june 6th). The also had the results back from the scat scan (already?) That was fast and it looked good. Seemed pleased with what they say. Could be mild form of Graft VS Host Disease but by giving me steroids they catching it early. Good news today for now. The only thing else they can do is do a biopsy of my liver to see for sure if the problem is Graft Host VS Host Disease (trying to mak it simple to understand). I HOPE it is not confusing. They want to avoid that if possible and I certainly agree! The Upper Room Daily Devotional Guide is available free to the congregation. Page 2

Keith Jones blogs Acts 3: English Standard Version (ESV) - 17 And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, 20 that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21 whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 22 Moses said, The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. 23 And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people. 24 And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. 25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 26 God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness. ********* When I lived in Atlanta, there was a man who stood on a popular intersection with a microphone in one hand. The other end of the microphone wire was plugged into a speaker, which sat in a stroller that faced the traffic, so passing cars could listen to threats of hell and damnation as they waited for the light to turn. The scene was always somewhere between amusing and sad, because some people paint a picture of God that makes him sound eager to condemn. Now, I do believe that hell is a real place, but the testimony of much of the New Testament proclaims a God whose mission is to gather as many people as possible into the grace of God, saving us from sin. God sends warning after warning, displaying incredible patience with a people reluctant to heed the call to repentance. God wants us all to turn back from sin and receive the free gift of grace. Of course, it's hard to repent. I hate admitting that I'm wrong. I'd much rather ignore the facts and let my pride win out. Stubbornness isn't going to help, however -- I don't think God is going to admit that I'm right! No, the wiser path is to admit that we are wrong, that we are sinful, and that we are in need of grace. God wants to restore us to life, and may we receive it joyfully, trusting that our sins are cast into the depths of the oceans, never to be remembered in the Kingdom of Heaven. Page 3

4 Updates and Reminders Martha Muses After our annual meal together and a visit to the play at church we will not be meeting together until September 12. You are welcome to join us then. We will be studying the book American Miracle Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic as our bible study for this session. Lapel Mike The preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mike, and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mike cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again. After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third pew leaned toward her mother and whispered, "If he gets loose, will he hurt us?" Change of address: Mariann Black, 1015 Bridgemont Ct. 6 June SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY Hoge s Recycling Project-Hoge has had a recycling project. Donna Swaneck takes aluminum cans brought to the church to Cyclemet for recycling. It is a nice source of income for the church. While some are bringing cans that their immediate family has used, others collect cans from work, extended family members, or friends. Our sexton Tony picks up cans from our property as he cares for the outside of our church. Thank you for your support. 4 10:30am Worship w/rev. Pyrethrin leaves that come from the painted daisy flower are widely used in commercial fungicide for plants. Grow your own painted daisies and use the flowers as fungicide for plants. Dry the flower heads, then grind them or soak overnight in 1/8 cup of alcohol. Mix with up to 4 gallons of water and strain through cheesecloth. Page 7
