Bottiger, Ph.D. and Betty Tucker. They received the Bronze Good Citizenship Medals. Patrick has spoken twice before to our chapter. His talks are more than informative; they are skillful articulations of how events of the Revolutionary War have caused problems and the quest for solutions that extend to follow-on generations. Betty Tucker has been instrumental in assisting Harris in the editing and production of The Crier. This Brown University graduate is a very, very, very, valuable member of our leadership team, for she is an exceptional proof reader; Louise Hunter Trudy Withey, Marjorie Ramseur, and Virginia Bailey. These ladies received the Daughters of Liberty Medals in grateful recognition for unselfish devotion, tireless effort, and assistance to the Sons of the American Revolution. They have dedicated their time, energy, ability and/or finances in support and furtherance of the stated objectives of this Chapter, the Florida State Society and/or National Society. 5 Heraldry: The Wearing of Medals 1 Part I: Precedence of SAR Medals as a Stand-Alone Display of Loyalty During the next several months, a series of short articles will appear in the Crier, which address the proper way of wearing medals, decorations, badges and insignia. This will be done in a series, which will have five to six points of focus: (1) SAR awards as a stand-alone display of loyalty; (2) SAR awards alongside United States authorized medals and decorations; (3) SAR awards alongside foreign medals and decorations; (4) SAR awards alongside US State medals and decorations; (5) SAR awards integrated with one or all of the aforementioned items relating to medals and decorations. During the sixth point of focus, we will discuss a method of displaying awards and decorations while wearing a Revolutionary War uniform or a suit/sport coat with tie at our chapter meetings and dinners. As noted in the SAR Handbook Vol. III, the prestige and influence of the National Society of the SAR depend upon the loyalty of its members. It is important that each member possesses the SAR Badge; and it s important that each member understands how this medal is worn, especially when wearing other awards and decorations. 1 Photo and article by Chuck Sweeney, Naples Chapter SAR President. This and additional information concerning the code for wearing medals, decorations, badges, and insignia can be found on Google: NSSAR Code for Medals. Or go SAR Handbook/sar_handbook_volume_3_rev_2012.pdf. THE NAPLES CRIER - PAGE 5 - APRIL 2012 The precedence of honor is given to the SAR Badge; meaning, it s the highest ranking medal given to an SAR member. When not worn with a ribbon around the neck to denote the position of leadership the wearer is currently holding or has held, the SAR Badge and other medals of honor shall be worn on the left breast. A good rule of thumb to help you remember this is to honor the highest award by placing it over the heart. All subsequent medals shall be mounted or pinned in order of precedence from the wearer s right to left. Then (if applicable) additional medals should be worn in a second and subsequent rows beneath the first, overlapping no more than 50 percent of the medals above it. In the picture below, General of the Armies Black Jack Pershing is wearing only three of his many awards. The most senior of these medals lies on his left breast, over his heart. The other two medals are mounted by precedence from heart to arm. During our 39 Birthday of the founding of our chapter on 9 March 2012, no less that thirty-two awards and decorations were prepared for presentation to SAR/DAR members and guests. For the four ladies who received the SAR Daughters of Liberty Medal, it s important for them to know how highly we value their service to our society. The SAR Daughters of Liberty Medal holds the fourth position of precedence in all the medals that can be given by the SAR. It lies behind the SAR Badge, the Minuteman Award, and the Gold Good Citizenship Medal. For those members who were awarded the War Ser- Heraldry (Continued on page 6)

6 (Continued from page 5) Heraldry vice Medal or the Military Service Medal, it s important for them to know that the precedence of these two medals lie at numbers five and six respectfully. These medals are senior to the National Medal of Distinguished Service (#7), the Patriot Medal (#8), the State Medal of Distinguished Service (#9), Medal of Heroism (#10), and the SAR Meritorious Service Medal (#11). Based upon what has been stated thus far, wearing the SAR Badge (without being suspended from a neck ribbon), the War Service Medal or Military Service Medal is senior to the Patriot Medal and /or the Meritorious Service Medal. The mounting of the SAR Badge, the Military Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal from over the heart to the arm is shown above. In the months that follow, the Naples Chapter leadership will continually encourage members to earn and wear a minimum of three medals. If a member does not currently have three medals, he should wear what he has. Then he should make every effort possible to avail himself to the opportunities that will give him recognition for superior service to our chapter and the reward of an appropriate decoration. Three ways in which such recognition can be earned include: (1) Assisting with the objectives of the SAR when asked to help; (2) Achieving noteworthy success as a committee member or chairman; or (3) Volunteering to hold a chapter office and executing the duties of that office responsibly. 8 Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest The National Society SAR Americanism Committee is pleased to announce the National Americanism Poster Contest for The aim of this contest is to stimulate interest in American History in support of the established school curriculum. This contest is directed at students in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grades, depending on which year the American Revolution is taught in their educational system - including ecumenical and home schooled students. The contest is also open to members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who are in the same grades but whose school system may not be participating in the contest. In the case where the local school system, or its equivalent, is participating, the scout must enter the contest through the school and not as a separate entry. The topic for the Poster Contest is set by the NSSAR Americanism Committee annually at the Spring Leadership Meeting for the upcoming school year. The topic is announced at the Annual NSSAR Congress after the winning poster for the current year is recognized. The topic for year s contest is: "The Battle of Guilford s Courthouse" The contest entries from the preceding academic year are judged at the NSSAR Annual Congress by members of the NSSAR Americanism Committee. A representative of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) is invited to participate in the poster judging. How the posters are judged Posters will be judged on the following criteria: 1. Does the poster express the annual theme? 2. Does the poster show originality by the student? 3. Does the poster show evidence of research? 4. Does the poster show artistic merit and creativity? 5. Does the poster accurately reflect the historical event? NAPLES CHAPTER S.A.R. will judge submitted posters and select the finalists at its luncheon meeting on April 5, THE NAPLES CRIER - PAGE 8 - APRIL 2012

9 The Battle of Guilford Courthouse by Daniel P. Murphy, Ph.D. The loss of Tarleton's Legion was a heavy blow to the British. Cornwallis was now deprived of his most effective weapon against the partisans. As a matter of both policy and prestige, Cornwallis could not let this defeat go unavenged. He set off after Morgan. The Chase to the Dan Aware of the danger of being cut off by the British, Morgan retreated to the north as quickly as he could. Cornwallis pursued Morgan into North Carolina as far as Ramsour's Mills. There, on April 25, he learned that Morgan was two days' march ahead of him. Cornwallis realized that his conventional force could not run down his prey. Determined to catch the Americans, he ordered all the supplies and baggage that his men could not carry be burned. Tents, wagons, spare provisions, and even the army's rum ration went up in flames. The officers sacrificed their baggage along with their men's. Daunted by the implications of this bonfire, 250 soldiers deserted. Cornwallis renewed the pursuit with the rest. When Greene learned of Cowpens and the British reaction, he set out almost alone to join Morgan, reaching him in two days. When Greene learned that Cornwallis was marching north, he was delighted. Then he is ours! he declared. Greene decided to lure Cornwallis farther north, away from his bases of support and into hostile territory. He would try the delicate task of keeping his army just far enough ahead of the British for security but not so far ahead as to discourage them from following. Morgan thought the plan courted disaster. Greene replied, I shall take the measure upon myself. He ordered that boats be collected at the Dan River, near the Virginia line. He directed General Isaac Huger to recall Henry Lee and march the army at Cheraw to a junction with Morgan. Cornwallis crossed the Catawba River on February 1, brushing aside some North Carolina militia in a skirmish in which General Davidson was killed. Morgan's force was thirty miles ahead on the way to the Yadkin River. The race to the Dan was not a speedy contest. Both armies were increasingly exhausted, and downpours of rain turned the roads into muddy sloughs. Thanks to preplaced boats, Morgan got safely across the Yadkin. On February 9, the two halves of Greene's army reunited at Guilford Courthouse. Cornwallis was close behind. Greene detached a light corps of his best men under Colonel Otho Williams to act as a rearguard. Over the next few days, these men were only a few steps ahead of the vanguard of the British army under General Charles O'Hara. When they finally crossed the Dan River on February 13, O'Hara's advancing men could hear their shouts of triumph. Why didn't George Washington march his army south? Washington was very concerned about the situation in the south. He sent some of his best regiments to the Southern Department. He stayed in the north because the arrival of a French army at Rhode Island in 1780 raised his hopes that he could launch a final and decisive strike at the British base at New York. A Contest for North Carolina THE NAPLES CRIER - PAGE 9 - APRIL 2012 Cornwallis could not follow Greene across the Dan because Greene had taken all the boats with him. He had to be content with chasing the main American army out of the Carolinas. He fell back to Hillsborough and rested his men. Greene did not remain in Virginia long. He recrossed the Dan and sent out contingents of his army to harass the British. After he and Cornwallis maneuvered against each other, Greene settled his army down at Guilford Court House. By this time, Greene had finally been reinforced. He had nearly 1,500 Continentals, 2,600 militiamen, Washington and Lee's cavalry, and a small artillery train 4,400 troops in all. Cornwallis was heavily outnumbered. He had only 2,000 men, but they were all veteran professionals. On March 15, he marched against the American army. Greene had learned from Morgan's experience at the Battle of Cowpens; he placed two lines of militia before his main line of Continentals. Cornwallis approached at midday. After a cavalry skirmish, the redcoats began advancing against Greene's position. The first line of North Carolina militia fired two volleys and ran away. The Virginia militiamen in the second line fought more stubbornly. A confused and bitterly fought battle developed as the second line was forced aside. Meanwhile, elements of the British force advanced against the third line of Continentals. The Americans drove them back with a withering fire and a Guilford (Continued on page 10)

10 (Continued from page 9) Guilford bayonet charge. Greene, unwilling to take risks with his army, did not reinforce this success. This gave the British a chance to rally and they counterattacked. A newly raised regiment of Maryland Continentals fled from the field. The rest of the Continentals attacked with such force that, in order to stop them, Cornwallis had to order his artillery to fire into the melee, cutting down his own men with the Americans. The Continentals fell back. After three hours of combat, and with most of his army scattered, Greene decided to withdraw. The field was left to Cornwallis. A Parting of the Ways In winning a hard-fought victory at Guilford Court House, Cornwallis completed the ruination of his army. He lost a fourth of his total force in the battle ninety-three dead and 439 wounded. Rains fell after the battle, adding to the misery of an army without tents or provisions. Cornwallis had to head to the coast, first Wilmington, then in Virginia, to make contact with the British navy and receive badly needed supplies and reinforcements. Cornwallis had taken himself out of the war farther south. Greene Returns to South Carolina Though he had lost the culminating battle of the campaign with seventyeight dead and 183 wounded, Greene's strategy had succeeded admirably. He had used Cornwallis's combativeness to lure him out of the southern theater and wear out his army. There were still 8,000 British troops in the Deep South, but most of them were tied down in garrison duty. The largest maneuvering force available to the British was Lord Francis Rawdon's 1,500 men at Camden. Nathanael Greene proved to be one of the most gifted American generals of the Revolution. Ironically, this combative commander was raised a Quaker. The departure of the militia reduced Greene's own army to around 1,500 men. Despite this, he wrote Washington, I am determined to carry the war immediately into South Carolina. He sent word to the partisan leaders in that state that he was coming, and he dispatched Henry Lee and his Legion to renew its partnership with Francis Marion. On April 9, he led his army into South Carolina. Lord Rawdon, the British commander at Camden, was only twenty -six years old. Despite his youth, he was a veteran who had seen action since Bunker Hill. When he learned of the approach of Greene's army, he had only 900 men with him. He had sent 500 out looking for Marion. Rawdon was secure for the time being in Camden, which was well fortified. He would demonstrate that he was not the kind of man who was content to wait and see what his opponent had in store. HELP! HELP! Your help is needed! As we head for 2013, the Naples Chapter is looking for members to join the goals and fraternity of the Sons of the American Revolution. Southwest Florida is paradise; but, with many members of the Chapter living in two states all members work together to maintain the programs. The nominating committee must find members to help operate the Chapter through committees and a mutual desire to promote the principles of the Sons of the American Revolution. President Chuck Sweeney is challenging members to wear at least 3 medals; and, as seen this year, member participation is recognized and rewarded. For 2013, the Chapter needs a new editor for the newsletter, The Naples Crier; a new website manager, a new registrar, new secretary, and members to assist with monthly programs. With more members participating, the time required of each person is reduced; and, the good times are enjoyed beyond the monthly meetings. Contact Roy Richardson, Nominating Committee Chairman for information about the committees that may be of interest to you. 11 Color Guard Amendment More pictures from the 39 th Birthday Dinner Naples Chapter Board adopts a Color Guard Amendment based upon Article XIII, Section 1, of our By- Laws which says: When required to conform to changes in the By-Laws of the State or National Societies, these By-Laws shall automatically conform, and the Secretary shall notify the members of the conforming change. Effective 20 March 2012 an amendment is adopted which acknowledges we have a Color Guard, and that it is under the supervision of a Color Guard Commander, who is an officer of our chapter. The new amendment falls under Section 11 of our By- Laws. That section authorizes us to have two Sergeants-at-Arms. The new amendment reads as follows: Section 11a. Color Guard Commander. One of the two Sergeants-at-Arms shall serve as the Bernardo de Galvez Camp #13 Color Guard Commander, with the following guidance: Pursuant to the NSSAR Color Guard Handbook, the optimum minimum number of men that form a Color Guard unit consists of four (4) compatriots: Two (2) Color Bearers of which one carries the United States National Flag, and the other carries either the State or SAR Flag; and two (2) Musketeers or Riflemen who escort the Color Bearers. It s understood that the Naples chapter may not have Musketeers or Riflemen. In such a situation the Color Guard may consist of a minimum of three (3) members with at least one, usually the Color Guard Commander, marching to the right of the National Colors. The left side of the National Colors shall be covered, where practical, either by a second Color Guard member (with or without a Musket or a Revolutionary War Rifle), or by another Color Guard Bearer who carries another flag (most often the state flag or an SAR flag). As the Bernardo de Galvez Camp #13 Color Guard grows, the Naples Chapter Color Guard Commander will march ahead of the National Colors separate from any other rank.
