1 CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH 1 THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD January 6, :00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! -Psalm 98:1a AS WE GATHER (prepared by Jim Gann) Epiphany, a Greek word meaning appearance or becoming public, commemorates Christ s appearance to the world as the promised Savior of the Gentile nations, that is, all the peoples of the world. The Jews were expecting a warrior king, who would rid Israel of all its enemies. But, the Christ of Bethlehem was to be the Savior of all people of all lands and of all ages. The wise men from distant lands saw His star and, moved by the Holy Spirit, searched for and found Bethlehem s child, their Redeemer. Today, we thank God for that revelation. We have been brought out of spiritual darkness into His marvelous light! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord. People: who made heaven and earth. Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, People: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin, (A moment of silence for reflection on God s Word and for selfexamination) Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Dear loving and gracious God, we have sinned against you by our own fault, by our own grievous fault. We have failed to honor you with our lips and our hearts have been far from you. 5 5 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 2:1 12 (The star leads the Magi to Bethlehem, where Jesus Christ was born for all.) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the second chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. (The Gospel is read) Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ. NICENE CREED All: We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. 7 TITHES, PLEDGES, AND OFFERINGS [Please take a moment and sign the attendance book at the end of the pew] 7 (Please stand for the Prayers) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Bidden by the Spirit, let us approach the throne of light on behalf of all who sit in darkness and the shadow of death and that the people of God may walk in the light. O blessed Lord, we give You thanks that the mystery once hidden has now been revealed and Jesus Christ is come for all people. Grant us boldness so that we may proclaim with confidence this saving Gospel and prepare the hearts of those who hear so that they may believe in Jesus Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Mighty Lord, to You all nations are accountable and all who lead them. Give to us and to all peoples good government and faithful leaders who will heed Your Word and do Your bidding. Bless all servicemen and servicewomen who protect us near and far and bless all civil servants who serve us for the common good. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Blessed Savior, You have made Your Church to be the home of all people and bid us welcome the stranger in Your name. Pastor: Loving God, Your Son came to claim all our ills and to grant us healing, comfort, and peace sufficient for all our needs. We cry to You on behalf of those who are sick [names... ], and those we name before You in our hearts who grieve the loss of loved ones [names.], that their suffering be relieved, their sorrows find comfort, and their hearts know the fullness of Your peace. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: O Lord of mercy, You have daily fed us with all that we need for this body and life, and now You bid us come to feast upon the flesh and blood of Your Son. Grant us faith, a discerning heart, and repentance that we receive without hindrance all Your gifts in this blest communion. Lord, in Your mercy, People: hear our prayer. Pastor: Holy Lord, You have set us apart as Your own people by Baptism and granted us faith to walk in Your ways. Keep us faithful so that we persevere in time of trial and temptation and remain in Christ until that day dawns when we shall be reunited with those who have gone before and dwell with You in the life death cannot overcome. 10 THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. 10 PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup. We proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. People: Amen.
