1 The World of Joseph Fielding: Chapter 16 Five Apostles Arrive from America on April 6, 1840 Joseph Fielding wrote at on Monday e 6 of April, five apostles, namely, Elders Heber C. Kimball, Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, his broer Orson Pratt, and George A. Smi, arrived at e Liverpool docks on e ship Patrick Henry. Joseph did not mention at ey were accompanied by Reuben Hedlock who had been a faiful member since April 6 was exactly four years after e dedication of e Kirtland Temple, ten years after e organization of e Church, and twenty years after Joseph Smi s First Vision. 2 Brigham Young arrived in England on April 6, 1840, wi four oer apostles. Heber C. Kimball returned to England wi President Young after an absence of two years. Parley P. Pratt, e missionary who took e restored gospel to Joseph Fielding and his sisters, began his first British mission in Orson Pratt, younger broer to Parley, joined e LDS Church in 1830 and proselyted wi Samuel H. Smi. George A. Smi, a first cousin to e prophet Joseph Smi, traveled wi four apostles and joined two in England in Before leaving New York City, Elder Parley P. Pratt had found e opportunity to hear Joseph Smi preach in Philadelphia. He wrote: 259

2 A very large church was opened for him to preach in, and about ree ousand people assembled to hear him. Broer Rigdon spoke first, and dwelt on e Gospel, illustrating his doctrine by e Bible. When he was rough, Broer Joseph arose like a lion about to roar; and being full of e Holy Ghost, spoke in great power, bearing testimony of e visions he had seen, e ministering of angels which he had enjoyed; and how he had found e plates of e Book of Mormon, and translated em by e gift and power of God.... The entire congregation were astounded; electrified, as it were, and overwhelmed wi e sense of tru and power by which he spoke and e wonders which he related. A lasting impression was made... multitudes were baptized in Philadelphia and in e regions around, while, at e same time, branches were springing up in Pennsylvania, in Jersey, and in various directions. 3 Apparently e apostle s voyage to England was very difficult, and after eir arrival, ey did not locate John Taylor until Tuesday, who was overjoyed to see em. All but Elder Pratt, who remained in Liverpool wi Elder Taylor, traveled by train to Preston on Wednesday. Joseph Fielding, by is time in Manchester at e mission office, learned of eir arrival on Thursday after receiving a letter from his broer-in-law in Preston, George Greenwood, who had 4 since joined e Church. This warm letter was written wi humor and affection. George penned: I have e pleasure to inform you of e welcome arrival of our much esteem d Bro r Kimbell at our House in company wi four oer Breren. They landed in L,pool on Monday but did not find out at you were, or had been in L pool until after you had left for Manchester. Bro r Kimbell appears raer in, he has been poorly, but says e Sea Voyage has done him good. We had a very rong time for two hours. Bro r Kimbell was accompanied by Bros Smi, O. Pratt, Young and Hadlock. If we had Bro r. Fielding here we should feel our happiness increased. We feel to want you here so soon and you can come, we ask in good heal and our joy increased by our arrivals. I hope you are well and engaging all e comforts you can wish from Your Family. I expect you have had word from Br. Taylor before is but Bror. Kimbell wished us to drop you a line to make work. Sister Hannah and Rachel are bo well. We all join in love to you expecting to see you soon. I remain your affectionate Bro r. George Greenwood Joseph immediately traveled by train to Preston to meet em. There he found: e Breren at Sister Dawson s, our old Moer. It was indeed a time of Rejoicings, yet ey look in & weaer beaten. Bro. Kimball is very in, but ey are in good Spirits, and e Spirits of e Saints are greatly revived by eir coming. 5 Joseph, who was reunited wi Hannah, took some time to write at in his absence, Hannah had 260

3 struggled wi temporal difficulties: She would go to Work, but she cannot leave e little Child. Her hands are tied fast. I have been in Liverpool... e Means afforded are very limited. This at present is my greatest anxiety. I feel grieved at my Mind is not more free in is respect, so wi all e Blessings of God bestowed upon me I still have need of Patience. There is a little Party Spirit here, and my Wife is in one Party, ough not in e Spirit of it, but living in e midst of it. I have but little time wi her, so she is left, as it were, wiout a guard in e Midst of temptation. From is and oer Cases of e same kind, I learn one lesson, viz; at no Man should go for into e Vineyard, to leave his Family, unless ey can be supplyed in temporal ings. 6 The Apostles Hold Council Meetings in Preston On Sunday e 12 of April, e apostles met wi e Saints in Preston s Temperance Hall, formerly e cock pit. Joseph Fielding wrote at Elder Kimball called him up: into e Pulpit to open e Meeting. This was his desire to support me in my office. He en prayed and spoke a While & Bro. Young bore testimony. Joseph wrote about e afternoon meetings: Elder Kimball spoke. I administered e Sacrament, and Elder Smi spoke, and several of e Saints. A contribution was made to assist e Breren to eir Places. The apostles held a conference in Preston s Temperance Hall e Sunday after eir arrival. In e evening meeting Orson Pratt spoke: [He] gave an account of e coming for of e Work, e Angel, etc.; it was very interesting. Bro. Hedlock spoke after. The House was full. I closed by Prayer. 7 Brigham Young Sustained as President of e Quorum of e Twelve On Tuesday ey were joined in Preston by Elder John Taylor and Parley P. Pratt from Liverpool. Elder Wilford Woodruff left his field of service in e Ledbury area and traveled to Preston. The seven apostles, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, George A. Smi, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, Wilford Woodruff and John Taylor met in council and ordained Bro. Richards to e office of Apostle. Willard Richards was e only apostle in is dispensation to be ordained to his office outside e 261

Brigham Young was en sustained by his fellow apostles to be e president of e Quorum of e Twelve, anoer unique event. 8 Unbeknownst to any of em, Orson Hyde had recently left Nauvoo to return to England. He planned to go on to Jerusalem, where he would serve a historic mission. 9 On Wednesday e eight apostles held a general conference, again meeting in e Temperance Hall. Joseph Fielding wrote: A General Conference met at 10 A.M. in e Cockpit. The Breren were ere from most of e Churches. I opened e Meeting. Elder Kimball presided. I represented e Church in Preston & oers [represented] e oer Branches.... [That evening] Bro. Woodruff preached & Bro. Taylor spoke after; full house. 10 In 1840, Willard Richards became e only apostle to be ordained to his office outside e United States in is dispensation. On Thursday e Twelve held anoer council meeting. It was determined at Joseph would stay in Preston after mons of being away from Hannah and Rachel. Elder Taylor returned to Liverpool. During is meeting Peter Melling was called to be a patriarch. Peter Melling Called to be e First Patriarch in England Peter Melling, who was just past his fifty-ird birday, had joined e Church shortly after e 11 missionaries arrival in England. The day after his call, e apostles, wi Joseph and Hannah Fielding, met at e Melling home in Penworam, just across e River Ribble from Preston. There, Peter was ordained to e office of patriarch, becoming e second patriarch in e LDS Church, e first being Joseph Smi s faer. The members of e Quorum of e Twelve Apostles en placed eir hands on Peter s head and pronounced a patriarchal blessing upon him. 12 After is event, ey all partook of Sister Moon s Bottle of Wine, 40 years old. The Word of Wisdom was loosely adhered to in e early years after Joseph Smi s 1833 revelation about strong drink. However, is forty-year-old bottle of wine in Penworam was probably consumed because e Moon family was making firm plans to emigrate as soon as possible. They had surely saved is bottle for a special occasion, and wi is honor being bestowed on is faiful man, perhaps ey realized ere would not be a better time. Just two weeks earlier Joseph Fielding had recorded in his journal at he and Elder Taylor happened on e opportunity to teach an interested husband and his wife e gospel in eir Liverpool home. Their hostess had commented at she was entertaining angels unawares. She en ordered e Servant to bring in a Pitcher of Beer, of which we took a little, chiefly as a 13 compliment to em. 262

5 The Apostles Give Their Approval for LDS Converts to Emigrate Anoer council was held Saturday evening. Joseph Fielding wrote: Bro. P. P. Pratt spoke of e Gaering about an hour; shewd e price of Land, Corn, e Cost of going, Situation of e Country, and how e Saints should act, viz: to go as oer Emigrants, making no noise about it, at as soon as ey are ready ey might go. Joseph explained in his diary at is was e decision of e council a week earlier. The Rich should not go wiout e Poor, a lesson which was learned during e exoduses from Kirtland and Far West, or ose at had more an ey needed should help ose at lacked, so e way is now opened. Joseph felt validated in his decision to hold off on allowing e Saints to emigrate until e arrival of e apostles: I felt ankful at I had held back as I had done, and not given liberty till e Breren have come. I felt ankful for Men of God to teach e Tru to us, at we may not walk 14 in Darkness or in Doubt. Concerning is week of council meetings, John Taylor s biographer recorded: It was resolved at a periodical should be published and called e Latter-day Saints Millennial Star, of which Parley P. Pratt was e appointed editor. A hymn book was also to be published, John Taylor being one of a committee of ree to select e hymns. It was 15 also decided to print a ird edition of e Book of Mormon. The Millennial Star would be published for e next one hundred and irty years. This publication was ultimately replaced by e Ensign in Joseph Fielding wrote: The Breren in Council were also much edifyed. Bro. O. Pratt went to Longton to preach e next Day. Early is Morning also Elders B. Young & Woodruff went off 16 toward Herefordshire [e Potteries]. Wilford Woodruff recorded e success of e missionary work in The Potteries, wi hundreds wanting to be baptized, more an he could physically handle: This has opened e largest field for labour & increase of numbers of any door at has been opened in e same leng of time since e [Church] has been established... when I left is vast field of Labour to go to Preston to attend e conference, ere were nearly 200 souls ready to be baptized as soon as an opportunity offers. But I have attended e 263

6 Conference & have again returned into is part of e vineyard, & Elder B. Young is wi me & I expect Elder Richards soon to assist... I expect e church will number several hundred in is region soon. 17 Joseph Fielding Released as e British Mission President On Sunday, Joseph s close friend Parley P. Pratt preached in e Temperance Hall. Joseph wrote: The Place was full of very attentive hearers. This Day my whole Soul rejoiced, yea, I could not express my Joy. I had been laboring 2 years since e Breren left us to go home. I feel at I have e good will & Confidence of my Breren, e 12; ey have not a Word of Censure, but ey rejoice to find ings as well as ey are. Their Desire is to exalt me in e Eyes of e Church. The Saints also manifest eir Love to me, even beyond what I expected to see.... The Lord has been very kind to me in all ings: blessed be His holy name forever, Amen. 18 Joseph did not record at he was released, but is action was eier taken or understood, as he immediately stepped down from his leadership position and supported e apostles as ey led e mission. After conferences ended in Preston in April, 1840, e apostles and oer missionaries went to eir various fields of labor. Joseph Fielding remained in Preston. John Taylor returned to Liverpool. Orson Pratt and Reuben Hedlock were sent to Alston. Heber C. Kimball, Parley P. Pratt and Willard Richards set up e new mission headquarters in Manchester. Brigham Young and George A. Smi accompanied Wilford Woodruff to e Potteries. Theodore Turley remained incarcerated in Birmingham, 200 miles sou of Alston. 264

7 After Joseph Fielding s release as e mission president, he was likely free to return to America. However, Hannah was in poor heal, and ere were possibly oer reasons ey chose to stay. Her broer George might have been interested in emigrating wi em and perhaps ey delayed until he was ready to leave. However, for e next few mons it appears at Joseph s presence was required in assisting e apostles as ey settled into eir new surroundings. Likely e intention was to emigrate as soon as possible, but ere was no pressing need. On Monday morning Joseph Fielding took care of some business. He wrote: I wrote Letters of Introduction for Elders Pratt & Hedlock to e Church in Alston, gave em each out of e Fund for e Purpose, 18 Shillings to take em ere.... Elder P. P. Pratt started by Railroad to Manchester... so I am now alone again. I ink Preston is honored by sending out e Servants of God to all Parts, ough it be at some little Expense. The Breren have all been supplyed wi means to take em on eir Way. Some Money had been raised for Elder Turley in Prison, but we found he did not 19 particularly need it, so it was taken to help e Elders out. rd On e 23 of April, Joseph and Hannah visited some friends across e River Ribble in Walton- le-dale. Two were sisters to Ann Fielding, e widow of his broer John. The friends had a previous engagement and apologized at ey had to leave. Apparently eir home was lovely, and Joseph left a pamphlet, The Voice of Warning wi e hopes at it would make its way to Graveley and his sister-in-law. He wrote: I felt truly ankful when I looked at my own Situation and considered what I had sacrificed for e Gospel s Sake. I might have enjoyed e World as well as ey. My Prospect was good in America; I might have been rich, but I saw e Kingdom of God set up on e Ear and it attracted my Attention and took away all my desire for e Pleasures of is vain world. I am now a Priest of e Most high God. I have got e Pearl of great price, e hidden Treasure, and I have sold all for it. 20 At e end of e mon, Joseph wrote of his wife s illness, which he simply called Cramp. He said at on one particular day she was ready to die wi pain, but after a blessing from e elders, she was immediately relieved. It appears at Elder Kimball occasionally shared eir home. After an evening council meeting, ey returned to find Hannah quite ill. We laid our Hands on her & Bro. Kimball prayed for her & rebuked her Pain & it ceased. 21 On Sunday e 26, Joseph left Hannah at home feeling better. He preached at e Temperance Hall, which Joseph felt would be his last time to preach ere on a Sunday. He and Elder Kimball spoke chiefly of e Principles of e Kingdom & of e Duty of one Saint to anoer to get em into e Celestial Glory. Upon returning home, he found Hannah in great pain. It seemed as ough Satan was determined to kill her. Then, during e evening meeting, she was again seized wi great violence. 265

8 First Issue of Millennial Star Published nd On May 2, 1840, Joseph Fielding received copies of e Millennial Star from Elder Pratt in Manchester. Elder Pratt had written a new hymn for e first issue, which was printed on e front page. The hymn, which is now e first hymn in e 1985 edition of e LDS hymnal, began: The morning breaks, e shadows flee; Lo! Zion s standard is unfurled! The dawning of a brighter day Majestic rises on e world. Joseph worked to find subscribers to pay for is publication. Articles about doctrine and church history were published, along wi news items, and information about e LDS Church in America, including birs and deas of members abroad. The first Sunday in May found Joseph Fielding and a local missionary preaching in e Orchard, an open air location ey had found. We enjoyed ourselves well & some of our old Opposers stood by.... I felt I had done my duty at e End of e Day. 24 The following week Joseph left Preston alough Hannah was still not feeling well. She wished me to go. He first walked to Clieroe to see Elder Kimball. The day was hot, my Shoes were tight, but I was not tired. He traveled to various locations over e course of e next few days, even taking Elder Kimball to Downham where ree were baptized late in e week. Members traveled to Downham from nearby locations to hear Elder Kimball and Joseph preach in a barn on Sunday. Joseph wrote: There was a good feeling rough e Place; many believed; 4 baptized; so we had a good Day.... [at evening, after walking ree miles,] preached at Clieroe, after which 6 were baptised. The Saints were much strengened ere; some precious Spirits among em. We felt great love to em and ey to us. 25 The following week Joseph and Elder Kimball visited many members in e surrounding areas. At e end of eir journey, We had a Pleasant Walk togeer to Preston; our Hearts burned wiin us while we talked by e Way. Friday afternoon, after almost a two week absence, Joseph found his wife very ill at her broer George s house. He took her to eir home, and en attended a council meeting at evening. During is same period, Brigham Young and Wilford Woodruff were building up e congregations in e Potteries. Wilford wrote: The [Anglican] Church minister in e Parish sent a spy to attend [our] meeting to carry him word what we preached. As soon as e meeting closed I put my hand upon his 266

9 shoulder & asked him what he ought of our doctrine. He replied, I ink it is of God. He appeared astonished when he left e house. 26 After traveling wi Elder Kimball during e ird week in May, Joseph Fielding wrote at ey concluded eir journey wi a meeting in Longton: We told e Saints a good deal about e Gaering. Bro. K. Told em how to act as to emselves; advised em to get ready to go off next spring. There was and is in general a good Spirit amongst em. 27 On Sunday, May 24, Joseph wrote at we enjoyed ourselves very much. I preached in e Eve in e Open Air, and we never had a better Day in a long time an is was. Peter Melling Confers Patriarchal Blessings The next day, Joseph took Hannah and Rachel to Penworam. They ate lunch wi Peter Melling and en spent e rest of e day wi e large Moon family, who were waiting till e time for Starting to America. That evening a meeting was held for e first time for members to receive eir patriarchal blessings. Several members of e Moon family received eir blessings. Joseph wrote: Broer Melling en blessed my Wife. It was a very comfortable time. We stayed till late. We had near ree miles to walk, and it was midnight before we got home. 28 In her blessing, Hannah was told at her heart is set to do e will of God.... [and] your posterity shall be mighty upon e Ear, and ey shall enjoy e fulness and fatness ereof.... Hannah was also blessed at: You, along wi your husband [would] cross e mighty Ocean, and at good land which you have been a stranger to, you shall inherit... And shalt have to rejoice wi all ose at are gaered from e nations of e Ear, who shall be brought unto Zion At e end of e week, Joseph wrote at A number of e Saints started to Liverpool, to sail for Zion on Tuesday next. Joseph named several of ese families, many of whom were Moon family members and eir relatives. The First Organized Group of British Saints Emigrate As e first organized group of LDS converts prepared to leave England, Heber C. Kimball, Joseph Fielding and William Clayton, directing eir emigration, sent a letter wi e saints to e leaders of e Church in Illinois, recommending ese members into eir hands. The letter was dated May 25, 1840: 267

10 We commend to your notice e Breren and Sisters having commendatory letters from us of is date, at you will do all at you consistently can for em, for I verily believe ey have e utmost confidence in you, and will receive wi gratitude your advice and instruction, and cheerfully submit to e rules and regulations of e Church. They have our blessings, and we trust eir subsequent conduct will entitle em to your blessings, also and e Church generally. We rejoice at we can say e work of God here is in a prosperous way, Yea, we rejoice greatly at e aspect of e times, expecting e time to be not far distant when e standard of tru will be conspicuously raised rough out is Land. We have witnessed e flowing of e Saints towards Zion, e stream has begun and we expect to see it continue running, till it shall have drained e salt or e light from Babylon, when we hope to shout Hosanna home. Dear breren accept our love, and present it to e Church of your breren in e new and everlasting Covenant. [Signed] Heber C Kimball Joseph Fielding William Clayton 30 At e end of May, e Moon family and oer new converts, totaling about forty, left Penworam and traveled to Liverpool, moving eir luggage on board e ship Britannia at evening. The ship had been transporting cargo and passengers across e Atlantic for twenty years. Over e next few days is group bought supplies for eir voyage, including almost forty yards of linen for tents. Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball joined e group on board for a few days. They hung a curtain across a doorway and gave blessings to e emigrants. Later, ey sat wi e leaders of is small group and drew a map, giving directions of how ey would reach Nauvoo from New York City. The British Royal Mail created a stamp in 2013 to commemorate e Britannia, which carried passengers in addition to mail across e Atlantic. The RMS Britannia was quite large, being 200 feet long. On Friday e 5, e ship was piloted into e River Mersey. The next day, e sails were raised and e ship navigated out of e port. Hugh Moon recorded at on Sunday, June 7, a very windy day, Most of us were sick. 268

11 John Moon wrote: On e 8 was had a very high wind and water came over e bulwarks all at day and all was sick. I never saw such a day in all my days. Some crying, some vomiting; pots, pans, tins and boxes walking in all directions; e ship heaving, e sea roaring and so we passed at day. On e 9, a calm. 31 Word of is large body of saints emigrating to e United States spread quickly roughout e congregations of British Saints. Shortly after eir departure, Joseph Fielding received a heartfelt letter from George Watt, e first man baptized in England. George had been encouraged by e breren to take employment as a policeman, and while he and his wife were financially better off an when he had worked in a factory, he considered is work to be bondage and asked for guidance as to how to extricate himself. By e second page of his letter George was asking for advice on emigrating to Zion and asked Joseph to speak wi Elder Kimball about his situation. He concluded, I have learned many good lessons from e experiences which I have had, I feel to praise e Lord for his goodness 32 at he has helped me hierto. George would serve a mission in Scotland before emigrating in For e next several weeks, rough e mon of June, Joseph s entries in his journal were very positive. Missionary work was going extremely well. He was traveling and was extraordinarily busy. He was also writing articles for e Millennial Star. The missionaries in England communicated via mail and e news from all areas was positive. John Taylor received a welcome letter from his wife Leonora in Nauvoo: She speaks of a Large Conference on e 5 of April last, which lasted 5 Days, during which 70 were baptised, etc. States at all e Wives of e Elders who have come to England were well. 33 At is time Elder Woodruff wrote from e Potteries: The power of God is among e People....The Churches in is part of e vineyard now number more an 500 souls where a little less an four mons since ere was not one to be found or e fulness of e Gospel heard. 34 Joseph did his best to stay in contact wi his family. He wrote Mary and Mercy in Nauvoo, likely sending ose letters wi e Moon family. He also visited wi Mara and his broer James, alough he did not comment on e visit. 35 Joseph wrote of a situation which would later inadvertently affect his own life. Ann Dawson, who had housed e missionaries for several years and was a faiful member, had a daughter who had left her husband and married anoer man. After eir marriage, which was considered unlawful 269

12 since e wife had not been legally divorced, e couple lived in a state of limbo, not allowed to be members in good standing because of is marriage, and yet ey were devout believers. After some period of time had elapsed, Joseph Fielding had a conversation wi Sister Dawson about her daughter. He wrote: I found at e former husband had been unfaiful and had broken his Marriage Covenant, and had forsaken his Wife; and on considering e Case we saw at e Woman ought to be allowed e Privilege of being admitted into e Church according to e earnest Desire of em bo. We erefore invited em to be baptised, ey were much pleased, and we expect em to be good Members of e Church. 36 Children in Liverpool were Blessed Publicly for e First Time In mid-june Joseph traveled to Liverpool wi Elder Kimball and ere joined Elder Taylor. On a Sunday ey met wi e members of e branch. Joseph wrote at in eir meeting: [They] blessed about 12 Children, e first at had been blessed publicly ere. The Saints were much pleased wi e Ordinance, and I felt blessed in it also, and in speaking to e Parents. Bro. Taylor preached in e Eve; e word was wi Power, but e Congregation is small for such a Place. 37 Joseph spent much of e mon wi Elder Kimball, wi whom he had worked closely during e first ten mons of his mission. Toward e end of June, Heber told Joseph at he had a Blessing for me, at he would give it to me as soon as he had an opportunity, and on e 26 of June ey found e time for e blessing to be given. Someone took notes, and Joseph transcribed em e next mon but saved a place in his diary for it: [He was told at he] shalt go for, and e Angel of God shall go before ee and prepare e hearts of e People to receive y testimony....and inasmuch as ou art faiful and hearkenest to e Council of God, and wilt listen to his Servants at he has set to roll for his Kingdom, e Power of e Priesood of Melchizedek shall rest upon ee.... Thou shalt be an instrument in e Hands of God of bringing many of y Kinsfolk into e Kingdom, and of proclaiming deliverance to y Faer & Moer & ey shall rise up and bless ee and y Posterity... for ey shall be great in e Ear. And y companion shall share wi ee in ese Blessings, for she shall be blessed.... No good ing shall be wiheld from ee or ine....and e time speedily come at ou shalt go for wi y Family upon e Land of Joseph to receive ine Inheritance on at goodly Land. And inasmuch as ou art faiful, ou shalt see e Saints at have been driven, restored to eir own Lands and eir Enemies brought Low. Hold e Character of y Breren sacred and God shall hold em sacred, and noing shall be wiheld from ee, and ou shalt see greater ings an have entered into y Heart. Satan has tempted ee to be rebellious, but e Spirit of God has said Be still, and ou shalt overcome all evil Propensities and become pure

13 A Conference was Held in Manchester in July, 1840 On Monday, e 6 of July, 1840, a general conference was held in Manchester. The apostles handled some difficult disciplinary items, one involving a member who claimed to be acting under e direction of e Spirit but who was harassing branch members. He was severely disciplined and Joseph Fielding wrote, We never before saw such a Case. I felt ankful at such a ing 39 did not take Place before e 12 came. Members of e Church attended is conference from all over England. Joseph wrote: The total Number was 2500, increase since last Conference, The Churches were divided into Districts and Elders appointed to preside over em, so at e Charge which had before devolved on me was taken off, and I was set at liberty. In e Eve John Taylor preached. 40 At e conclusion of e conference, President Brigham Young sang a duet wi a British member, Adieu, My Dear Breren, a hymn which Emma Smi had included in her 1835 hymnal. After a prayer e conference was concluded. 41 Joseph Fielding Assigned to Preach in Bedford and Huntingdon The following day Elder Parley P. Pratt, who had been chosen to be e new mission president, 42 presided at a council meeting. Joseph wrote: Those who had offered emselves for e Work were appointed to different Places by which e Work will spread furer rough e Land by far an heretofore. My Appointment according to my former request or desire, was to my native Place, e counties of Bedford and Huntingdon. 43 The First LDS Hymnal was Published in Manchester in 1840 A new hymnal was approved at is conference, which would shortly be compiled by Brigham 44 Young, Parley P. Pratt and John Taylor, wi two-hundred and seventy-one hymns. Elder Pratt had composed several of e hymns, including The Morning Breaks; Jesus, Once of Humble Bir; Faer In Heaven, We Do Believe; An Angel From On High; and Come, O Thou King of Kings. John Taylor composed Go, Ye Messengers of Glory. Oer hymns were written by William W. Phelps, including The Spirit of God, which has since been sung at e dedication of every temple in is dispensation; O God, The Eternal Faer; 271

14 Gently Raise e Sacred Strain; Redeemer of Israel; and Now Let Us Rejoice. Several hymns by Eliza R. Snow were included, such as Tru Reflects Upon Our Senses. Edward Partridge, e presiding bishop of e Church, wrote, Let Zion In Her Beauty Rise, a hymn which LDS congregations don t sing very frequently today, but e Tabernacle Choir sings often. Many of e hymns in is book were favorite and familiar non-conformist hymns. Isaac Watts, a dissenter from e 18 century, wrote Joy To The World; Come, Ye That Love e Lord; From All That Dwell Below e Skies; Sweet Is The Work and He Died, e Great Redeemer Died. The words to at particular hymn were touched up a bit by Elder Pratt, a liberty allowed since Mr. Watts had been dead for almost a century. Some hymns were beloved Meodist verses composed by Charles Wesley. These included, Ye Simple Souls Who Stray and Come, Let Us Anew. Joseph Fielding s moer would have been pleased to know at his well-known hymn, Arise, My Soul, Arise, was included. Of all e hymns listed here from e 1840 British hymnal, e latter hymn is e only one not found in e current 1985 edition of e LDS hymnal. This first British hymn book was published in July. 45 A surprising hymn was also included, How Firm a Foundation. This was not a new hymn at all, but was included in a1787 Baptist hymnal and adopted by e British Meodists. It would later be sung at e funeral of Robert E. Lee, e American Confederate general, and would become a favorite LDS hymn. A hymn composed by an American Baptist minister, Samuel Francis Smi, was included. Mr. Smi was e auor of e well known hymn, My Country, Tis of Thee. The hymn of his which was included in is 1840 hymnal was titled Can I Leave You? Yes, My Native Land, and had been included by Emma Smi in her 1835 Kirtland hymnal. This hymn addressed e influx of immigrants to e United States and eir feelings as ey left eir homeland. Anoer hymn included was originally a seven-stanza poem written in 1826 by British poet James Manwaring, The Stranger and His Friend. An American minister, George Coles, set e words to music and is new hymn was often sung in bo American and British Protestant congregations. After John Taylor became e president of e LDS Church, he had e words set to a slightly different version of e music by George Coles. The hymn is now in is form in e 1985 LDS hymnal and is titled, A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief. 46 British Printing of e Book of Mormon was Approved The July conference in Manchester also approved raising funds for e printing of a British edition of e Book of Mormon. Brigham Young sought bids for is project, ultimately selecting a printer in Liverpool. His bid was low because Elder Young found a separate source for paper. 272

15 The printer used e 1837 copy of e Book of Mormon which had been printed in Kirtland by Parley P. Pratt and John Goodson, but much of e spelling was British. 47 After e conference, Elder Pratt returned to e States. He planned to return wi his family. The decision had been made at he would remain in England, possibly for several years, in order to facilitate e publishing of books and tracts. He did not return until October. Joseph Fielding Visits wi His Sister Ann Matews and His Broer James Fielding The week after e conference Joseph met wi his sister Ann Matews for e first time since he departed Liverpool for Canada, six years earlier. She had traveled to Preston and hoped to see him. I found her raer more reasonable an I expected; more so an Bro. James. The following week he tried to visit again wi his sister Ann, who was staying wi James and Mara. Joseph wrote: [I] found but little satisfaction, for when I began to talk to her, James interrupted and took away my Subject twice....so it was proposed at she should come to see me, and I invited her to spend e next afternoon wi me... and it was agreed at I should call for her. I felt grieved at myself at I should be irritated at his talk... and was led to humble myself before e Lord on is account. 48 On July 16, 1840, Joseph and Hannah entertained his sister Ann and two apostles, Elder Kimball and Elder Richards. Theodore Turley, who had been released from jail and moved out of Birmingham, was also present. Joseph wrote: We spent e time very comfortably. Bro. K. took e Conversation wi Sister Matews and carried it on in an excellent Spirit. She also shewd a good Spirit, ough she still as ever could not receive ese ings. Bro. Turley spoke awhile much to e point. Bro. K. Bore testimony to her at last, and at her suggestion it was written, and she & Broer R. bo took a Copy. Broer K. at parting, proposed to have a Prayer. In looking rough e Early Church Information File, which is online, I can see at Lydia Moon, e daughter of Thomas Moon, received a faer s blessing on e night of e 25. It appears to be recorded in e patriarchal blessing index, but on bo e card and in Joseph s diary, is blessing is clearly identified as a faer s blessing. Lydia later received a patriarchal blessing in Nauvoo. This index shows at Lydia s parents, Thomas and Lydia Moon, bo received eir patriarchal blessings on e 25, in agreement wi Joseph Fielding s diary. The Moon family left Liverpool for New York City on e 6 of June, Hannah s patriarchal blessing is dated e 10 of June, 1840, in Penworam. It is found in Volume 8, page 21 of e Patriarchal Blessing Index.
