September 2017 Newsletter Carpe Diem It was 9:00 A.M. on September 11, It was a beautiful day, another day just like September 10 th had been. Then the unthinkable happened. Terrorists had hijacked jet planes and intentionally crashed them into the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. Thousands of lives were lost and our lives haven t been the same since. Most of us remember where we were when we heard that news. Some of us where in a place where we could watch the news reports unfold. I remember watching the news on the television in our break room at work. When the news that the World Trade Center Towers had collapsed I watched Arabs cheer and dance at that news. Thousands of innocent people had been senselessly murdered and they were cheering. The parallels between the World Trade Center attacks and the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 are very real and ghostly. On September 11 th we were complacent again. Our leaders received warnings and disregarded them again. We had let our guard down and paid for it again. One thing we can take from all that carnage and destruction is that tomorrow isn t assured to us. Those victims of 9/11 left home for work and assumed they would be home that evening. Perhaps some couples had fought that morning and didn t make up before departing. Perhaps some, in their haste not to be late, neglected to say I love you. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. James 4:14 (NIV) As the saying goes, Carpe Diem, (enjoy or seize your day). Tragedies like 9/11 happen, and yet life goes on. Keep in your mind and in your heart that this world is not our true home, and there is a better place we re going to than anything here. Each day we grow closer to the return of Jesus Christ. Each day we grow closer to the time we will live in the Heavenly Kingdom with him. Until then my friends seize the day! 4 Page 4 BULLETIN BOARD ALL MEN OF THE CHURCH ARE INVITED! Our September Men s Breakfast will be held on Saturday, September 2 nd at 8am! Stan Ludwig will be bringing breakfast! If you would like to bring breakfast one month the sign up sheet is located on top of the microwave in the side kitchen. The months of October-December are still open! 2017 Flower Chart The cost of providing flowers is $ We ask that you pay for your flowers one week prior to the date you choose. Checks should be made payable to Joanne Bumpus or Barb Fletcher, our Flower Stewards. We have openings for altar flowers on Sunday, September 24 th, October 1 st, 8 th and 29 th. Please see Joanne or Barb is you are interested in placing flowers on one of those dates. Roses for our New Babies: Please call the church office when a new baby has arrived. The church will pay for the rose if the parents are active church members or regular attendees. Grandparents can place a rose announcing the birth, but the cost is $4.00. Merry Widow s On The Calendar Wednesday, September 27 th Beth Norman will be giving cell phone lessons Please let Darlene know if you are interested in attending the play in Newark called Meet Me In St. Louis. When the regular Sunday School schedule starts back up on September 10 th, we will be in need of a teacher for the 4 th -5 th grade class. It's a great class and we provide the material. 7 Page 7 BACK TO SCHOOL SUNDAY On Sunday, August 20 th we recognized and prayed for the teachers and school volunteers that are part of our congregation. We also held a school supply collection! Thank you to all who brought in supplies. A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR TEACHERS AND SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS Teachers: Traci Higgins, Emily Lawler, Steve Lawler, Brenda Marks, Renee Martin, Sarah Merce, Judy Richards, Amy Ridgley, Jeremy Ryan, Dawn Wasson and Amber Zeman. On Thursday, August 18 th Pastor Bob participated in a graduation ceremony to recognize his achievement

8 Page 8 SOS YOUTH In the last few months, the SOS Youth have been busy updating the youth building with new curtains, decorations and paint projects. They have also held a few fundraisers and are so thankful for the support of our congregation. On July 29th they traveled to Mohican State Park for rafting. A great time was had by all! On Saturday, September 16th, they will be attending the Christian Concert Festival at Cedar Point called Pointfest!

9 Page 9 SOS YOUTH On Sunday, August 20th the youth held a Chili Cook-off. Thank you to everyone who brought in Chili and to those who supported our fund raiser! We raised $321.00! Our Chili Cook-off Champion was Sharon Hedges! CONGRATULATIONS!
