TE~RR~CE STREETS mght have been almost deserted today and many Terrace homes mght have been sendng CARE packages to a Poppa or.a Mamma n the pokey ~ but for one thng! Fremen and polce were too busy at nne o'clock last Frday nght to take tme out for wrtng down lcence numbers. Had there been tme and suffcent manpower avalable, about 200 drvers could have been charged wth obstructng progress of an emergency vehcle. Each one of them mght have been asked to pay a maxmum fne of $500, serve three months n jal ~ or both! The 200 drvers were n control of cars that lned up from the corner 'of Lakelse and Kolum all the way over to Pear Street where an abandoned barn was ablaze. t's a sheer s~:roke of luck the barn wasn't a house wth people nsde, because the Terrace Fre Dep~rtment smply couldn't get to the scene. The Muncpalty's second fre truck was restrcted to a speed of less than 10 mles an hour because of the lne of traffc. The truck was delayed for over 10 A long way, a short tme... THS WEEK, ONCE AGAN, many of the people of Terrace have had the opportunty to study and crtcse the operaton of one of our largest stores. That ths oppor.- tunty s afforded to so many people, all of whom lve n ths area, s n tself rare n ths day of large corporatons and wealthy shareholders. But what s even more surprsng s the tremendous growth shown by the Terrace Co-operatve n the last 20 years. From a gross sales fgure of slghtly over $1,500, ths organzaton has grown to a busness wth a gross sales fgure n 1965 of over $2,200,000. Much of ths growth s due to the tremendous expanson that has been gong on n Terrace for the past two decades, but much mare.s the drect result of the practcal applcaton of an deal. Organzed from a small farmers' n- "mnutes because of ts battle for a throughlane. We realze the blaze was a spectac.~lar one. We also realze.t's a natural th'ng for people to want to see what's gong on when flames and smoke are spotted on the skylne. But when ths basc curosty mpedes the progress of the fre truck, t becomes a tool of death. Last year n Terrace another abandoned shed was razed. Everybody gathered at the scene to watch the acton. Everybody sucked n ther breath as the flames shot 30 feet nto the dry summer ar. Everybody sckened a few mnutes later when polce and fremen car, red out charred remans Of a transent worker who had crawled.nto the buldng for a sleep. That man had a long sleep --and people of Terrace have short memores. Next tme you hear a sren or see a flashng red lght, pull over to the sde of the road and STOP, regardless of whch drecton you're travellng. When there s an emergency vehcle wthn 500 feet of your car or truck, you're bound by, law to gve the.rght-of-way. n short--t s a matter of necessty, not just courtesy: statute, the. Terrace Co-op has grown and expanded wth our town, and has shown ts ablty to progress and Succeed.n a hghly compettve feld. That the assocaton s also able to declare and pay dvjdends to the member-owners s another tangble example o f t h e co-operatve deal. Ths s money spent by the people of Terrace, that s returned to the people of Terrace, not to some stockholder who has no other nterest n the busness, save the proft pcture. Here also s a busness that employs local people to serve local customers, employees who are, n fact, owners of the store n whch they work. Many of us are a bt shy of co-operafves for a varety of reasons, but few can deny that the story of Ter.race C~-operatve Assocaton s one of success based n part at least on servce and cor~'ern for us, the people of Terrace. SALES SOAR N"65 Mult'Mllon Busness At Terrace Co.op Terrace Co-operatve Assocaton s tagged wth a su.ccess story n whch sales n all departments of the local department store complex have far exceeded budget amounts, however the Assocaton s also facedl wth problems. At the annual general meetng of the Assocaton held n the Commun~y Centre on Tuesday evenng, 96 members and about 20 guests heard.presdent at the board, Alec Houlden n,v, '~)ur bg problem today seems to be that many people are usng the s.ervtee of our Co-oporatve hut are not be. comng members. Ths does not make sense because t you are gong to use our servces, you may as well be sharng n the bone. fts." He ponted out the bass of Coop strength les n ts share captal and that n order to ncrease share captal.the Terrace Coop must have more members. A membershp n the Coop s avalable for $. Ea~dngs from purchases may be appled to shares untl the requred mnmum of ~200 n sham captal s reached. The mnmum share captal requrement s cur. rently under study and t s expected a. 'eselutlon wll be brought to nezt year~ annual meetng ~dl. lag for an ncreased mnmum share requrement of $300. Any earnngs on purchases made by persons havng over the requred amount n share captal are pad out to the members n cash. Patronage refunds totallng $25,- ~JY2 were made to members n Total sales d~lng :the year reached $2,208,516 of wtch only per cent was sold to Coop members, ~t was lesrn'ed st Toes. day's meetng that lg66 budget fgures to date have already been sur. passed and the Terrace Coop s n for another bonanza y~ar. The meetng endorsed the work of the expanson "commttee and tled a vote of eenfdence gvng the green lght to plans for an D000,008 e~ansnn to the Terrace store. The ~ddlton Wll gve the Coop 27,000 square feet of floor space n a two ~ storey ~mplex whch wll have several new sore. lee features. Plans ~ for a fur. nturo and sppllanee department, a new and a ll well as many other features. Archtects are currently workng on prelmnary sketches for the addton. Another new for the Co-up, ex. peoted ths year, s a bulk pst'oleum products plant and negotatons for a sutable ste on trackage s now underway. Followng annual reports, the meetng elected fve drectors to the board, four to serve ~ree year terms and one to fnsh an uncompleted one year term. Those cleated were Alec Houlden, Mrs. R. Wold, Lou Galr, Watson Baley and Tom Ward of Ktmat. Corbn Kng, general manager o/ the Terrace Co-operatve n Terrace, was presented wth a 25 year pn..
