2 SHABBOS, 28 KISLEV, PARSHAS MIKEITZ, FOURTH DAY OF CHANUKAH, SHABBOS MEVARCHIM CHODESH TEVES When bentching after the Shabbos meals, add both Retzei and Ve al Hanissim. See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Ve al Hanissim (when bentching or davening). Tehillim Early in the morning we gather in shul to recite the entire Tehillim with a minyan. Following Tehillim, a maamar (that can be understood by everyone) should be studied for around an hour, followed by davening. 9 Shacharis and Krias Hatorah Make sure to study a parshah of Chumash with Rashi every day, to say Tehillim every day, and to complete the Tehillim on Shabbos Mevarchim. It is crucial for you, your children, and your grandchildren. (Hayom Yom, 25 Shevat) After the Shacharis Shemoneh Esrei, say the whole Hallel. This is followed by Kaddish Shalem and Shir Shel Yom. Two Sifrei Torah are removed from the aron kodesh. From the first Sefer Torah, seven aliyos are read in Parshas Mikeitz. The second Sefer Torah is then placed next to the first one, and Chatzi Kaddish is recited. This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the first Sefer Torah. From the second Sefer Torah, Bayom harevi i is read for Maftir (Bamidbar 7:30 35). 3 Blessing the New Month It is proper to know when the molad will be before blessing the new month. 10 This month, the molad will be on Monday afternoon at 1:41 and 1 chelek. 11 The chazzan stands, 12 holding a Sefer Torah, 13 and leads the congregation with Mi shebeirach. It is customary for the congregants to stand as well. 14 Rosh Chodesh Teves will fall out on Monday and Tuesday. We don t say Av Harachamim. Shabbos Mevarchim is a day to farbreng, ideally in shul. 15 At Minchah, we don t say Tzidkas cha. MOTZOEI SHABBOS, 29 KISLEV, 5778 FIFTH DAY OF CHANUKAH In shul, the menorah is lit after the Kaddish Shalem following Shemoneh Esrei and before Aleinu. 17 In shuls where havdalah is made, the menorah should be lit first, followed by (Aleinu and) havdalah. 18 If the one lighting the menorah forgot to say Atah Chonantanu during Maariv, he should say ברוך המבדיל בין קודש לחול before lighting. See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo. MONDAY, 30 KISLEV, 5778 SIXTH DAY OF CHANUKAH, FIRST DAY OF ROSH CHODESH TEVES Shacharis, Krias Hatorah, and Musaf Say Yaaleh Viyavo in Shemoneh Esrei (in addition to Ve al Hanissim). See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo. After Shemoneh Esrei, the whole Hallel is recited, followed by Ve Avraham Zakein and Kaddish Shalem. 5 Next, say Ashrei and Uva Letzion. The chazzan concludes Uva Letzion quietly, and the Sifrei Torah are returned to the aron kodesh. Next, remove Rashi s tefillin, don Rabbeinu Tam s tefillin, and say Shema, Kadesh li chol bechor, and the Sheish Zechiros. After removing Rabbeinu Tam s tefillin, we daven Musaf for Rosh Chodesh. The chazzan should recite a chapter of Tehillim before saying the Chatzi Kaddish that precedes Musaf. 23 If you are wearing tefillin when the minyan reaches Kesser, cover the shel rosh when responding. 24 Bentching It is a mitzvah to increase in today s meal in honor of (Chanukah and) Rosh Chodesh. 25 Say Yaaleh Viyavo and the Harachaman for Rosh Chodesh (in addition to Ve al Hanissim). Additionally, replace the word.מגדול with (מגדיל ישועות מלכו (in the possuk מגדיל See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo. When saying a Berachah Acharonah Mei ein Shalosh (e.g., Al Hamichyah), add the addition for Rosh Chodesh. 6 The Frierdiker Rebbe cites an ancient custom to study another possuk from the kapitel corresponding to one s age each Rosh Chodesh, along with Rashi s explanation (and additional commentaries). 29 For Tehillim with Rashi, visit org/ If there are less than twelve pesukim in your kapitel (or less than thirteen in a leap year), when you finish the kapitel, learn it a second time. If there are more than twelve (or thirteen) pesukim in your kapitel, study enough pesukim each Rosh Chodesh to finish the kapitel over the course of the year. 30 TUESDAY, 1 TEVES, 5778 SEVENTH DAY OF CHANUKAH, SECOND DAY OF ROSH CHODESH TEVES See yesterday s Luach for the laws and minhagim of Rosh Chodesh. Today s davening is the same as yesterday s, with the exception that for the fourth aliyah (in the second Sefer Torah), Bayom hashvi i is read (Bamidbar 7:48 53). WEDNESDAY, 2 TEVES, 5778 EIGHTH DAY OF CHANUKAH ZOS CHANUKAH For the third aliyah, we read from Bayom hateshi i until ken asah es hamenorah (Bamidbar 7:60 8:4). This way, you will be allowed to throw out the leftover oil, wicks, and/or wax. 34 If you did not have this in mind, burn the leftovers in a fire prepared for this purpose. 35 The remaining oil in the bottle, however, may be used for other purposes. 36 Someone who did not give (enough) Chanukah gelt over the course of Chanukah should make up for it as close to Chanukah as possible. 37 THURSDAY, 3 TEVES, 5778 According to Kabbalah, the earliest time to recite kiddush levanah is the seventh day from the molad (i.e., next Sunday night). 8 HOSAFOS Ve al Hanissim The following laws apply if you forgot to say Ve al Hanissim when davening: If you remembered before saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah, go back and say Ve al Hanissim. 40 If you remembered after saying Hashem s name, do not go back. 41 The following laws apply if you forgot to say Ve al Hanissim when bentching: If you remembered before saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah, go back and say Ve al Hanissim. 42 If you remembered after saying Hashem s name, when reaching הרחמן הוא יעשה לנו נסים כמו שעשה add: Harachaman hu yizakeinu, and then continue with,לאבותינו בימים ההם בזמן הזה, בימי מתתיהו וכו Harachaman. 43 If you remembered after finishing bentching, do not go back. On Shabbos Chanukah, if you remembered Ve al Hanissim but forgot to say Retzei and remembered after beginning the berachah of Hatov Vehameitiv, return to the beginning of bentching. 9 go back to repeat it. 45 If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Shacharis or Minchah and remembered after saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah, finish the berachah and say it before Modim. 46 If you already began saying Modim, go back to Retzei. 47 If you already said the second Yihiyu leratzon, go back to the beginning of Shemoneh Esrei. 48 If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Shacharis and only remembered after davening Musaf, do not repeat the Shemoneh Esrei of Shacharis. 49 On the first day of Rosh Chodesh, if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Minchah and only remembered at night, daven Maariv twice, once for Maariv and the second time to make up for Minchah. 50 On the second day of Rosh Chodesh, if you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo during Minchah and only remembered at night, daven Maariv twice, once for Maariv and the second time as a voluntary tefillah. However, since it is no longer Rosh Chodesh, do not say Yaaleh Viyavo during either Shemoneh Esrei. 51 All the above also applies if you are unsure whether you have said Yaaleh Viyavo. 52 Yaaleh Viyavo When Bentching If you forgot to say Yaaleh Viyavo and remembered after saying Hashem s name at the end of the berachah but before starting the berachah of Hatov vehameitiv, say the added paragraph for Rosh Chodesh printed in the bentcher or siddur.
