Secretary, Vasavi Educational Trust, going round the art work done by the students of Kalabharathi under the direction of Smt. Insha Ummehani (seen in pic) The 16 th convocation of Kala Bharathi - A five year diploma course was held on Nov 12, This event every year is celebrated to pay homage to Dr. Mathoor Krishnamurti who was the Director of Bhavan s Bengaluru Kendra. The programme began with an invocation by students of Kalabharathi under the direction of Vidushi. H.V. Gayathri, 1 bhavanblrhns50@gmail.com

Bhavan s Director Sri. H.N. Suresh, welcomed the gathering. Nadoja Dr. B K Sumitra, the Chief Guest on this occasion, distributed certificates to all the successful candidates.

2 Bhavan s Director Sri. H.N. Suresh, welcomed the gathering. Nadoja Dr. B K Sumitra, the Chief Guest on this occasion, distributed certificates to all the successful candidates. She praised Bhavan for taking such initiative to promote Indian art and culture and congratulated the students and faculty for taking so much care and interest for the cause of music. She was impressed by the drawing and paintings by the students under the guidance of Smt. Insha Ummehani, which were displayed in the auditorium. She enthralled the audience rendering two songs - one on Shrungeri Sharadamba and the other a folk song. Dr. B K Sumitra has graciously offered to conduct workshop on Folk Music, Bhava Geetha, Bhakthi Geetha and Light Music at Bhavan. She also had a word of praise for her beloved father who provided proper education to her and her sisters in those years when educating a girl child was highly discouraged and difficult. She recollected how she travelled 80kms daily from a remote village to Shivamogga for her studies. Sri Manandi N Suresh was the Guest of honour on this occasion. He was generous to offer two of his school premises one at V V Puram and the other at J P Nagar, for extending the Bhavan s Kala Bharathi courses at these places. The convocation was followed by cultural events presented by the Bhavan s South Centre students. Smt. Shantala Ashok anchored the programme and proposed vote of thanks. Kathak by the students of Smt. 8 WORKSHOP ON MOHINIATTAM AT BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN Dr. Neena Prasad present participation certificate of Mohiniattam workshop to a student. Sri H.N. Suresh, Director, BVB, and Smt. K.P. Shruthi joins. Mohiniattam or Mohiniyattam is an Indian classical dance form that evolved in the state of Kerala. It is counted among the two popular dance arts of the state, the other being Kathakali. Although its roots date back to the age-old Sanskrit Hindu text on performing arts called Natya Shastra, similar to other Indian classical dance forms, Mohiniattam adheres to the Lasya type that showcases a more graceful, gentle and feminine form of dancing. 8 Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has begun the Mohiniyattam Diploma classes during this academic year. This is one of its kind in Karnataka, where there are no academic recognitions for the form in Karnataka. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan conducted a workshop on Mohiniyattam By Guru Neena Prasad on 7th,8 th and 9 th of October It was the first such workshop of Dr. Neena Prasad in Bangalore. The workshop was conducted in two batches

9 one to inter mediate students and the other to beginners. The workshop focused on body conditioning and techniques of Mohiniyattam. The students were fortunate to learn composition choreographed by Guru Neena Prasad. The senior batch learnt a cholkettu, a composition that is first in a Mohiniyattam repertoire.the cholkettu is said to be of only intricate body adavus of Mohiniyattam with a shloka in between. The batch included artists with proficiency in Mohiniyattam and the interaction with the Guru solved a lot many queries that they had of the art. The beginner s batch learnt a Ganapati shlokam and some Chaaris of Mohiniyattam. These included dancers with basic knowledge of Mohiniyattam but the workshop helped them to understand the art and their body in this art better. Dr. Neena Prasad is the era s most popular Mohiniyattam performer. She is also considered as a scholar of Mohiniyattam. Having had a background of strong dance academic education and career, Dr. Neena approaches Mohiniyattam in a scientific manner. Dr. Neena Prasad was very impressed by the work done by Bhavan and the facilitator Shruthi KP. She also is of the opinion that such workshops are of pivotal importance for the propagation of the art form. The workshop was attended by thirty artists, some of them were popular professionals of the city. 9

10 BVB-INFOSYS FOUNDATION CUTURAL OUTREACH PROGRAMMES : SEP- OCT Reviving art forms, taking art and culture closer to people has been the joint vision of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Infosys Foundation. A total of 332 programmes featuring 2759 artists attracting an approximate audience has been the substance of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan-Infosys Foundation Cultural Outreach programme since its launch in 2015 February. Notable programmes like Shankh Vadan was organized by Pune Kendra (Maharashtra). Bharatanatyam Program was organized by Trichy kendra (Tamilnadu). Group Patriotic song competition, Folk dance on Garbha, A play on Environment Park and Classical music program was organized by Ahmedabad Kendra (Gujrat). Folk Art of Telangana - Pothuraju Vinyasam, Oggu Dolu & Oggu Traditional Songs was organized by Hyderabad Kendra (AP/Telengana) Bharathanatyam by students of Smt.Supriya held on September 23rd at Srirangam 10

This joint project of Bhavan and Infosys Foundation aims to make art and culture more visible and dearer to the community in the days to come. The colourful photographs featured alongside speak volumes about the success and effectiveness of the outreach programmes. GUJRAT 09/09/2017- Park - A play on Environment: The play is written by well-known writer Manav Kaul. The same is directed by Nirav Vegda & Acted by Irfan Shaikh, Jay Raval, Jaydeep Prajapati, Anmol Chaurvedi & Krrish Patel. The play was created as open stage program, performed in open ground, under the trees with basic set up of properties. The format popularly known as environmental Experimental or Method Art is basically a very ancient art form of Drama and mainly popular in villages where people get to gather under a tree and create audience in arena format. The campus was converted as Garden and audience were asked to seat in open area on the stones, few chairs, benches etc. The live music performed with Keyboard, Harmonium, Dholak, Guitar along with a group of male chorus has created a complete different environment. There were performances of Chhota Khayal, Sufi based Classical Vocal Presentation & few presentations of Bandish of different Raagas. Pothuraju vinyasam: It is purely an act of devotion towards lord mallanna swamy. It is enacted to evoke the lord s blessings. Today, we have voggu veeresham, beerla mallesh to present this unique form of art of telangana culture in its true form. oggu & beerla are the only two families who have carried over this traditional art form. Oggudolu : Oggudolu is a part of oggukatha which goes back to kakathiya dynasty. It is an act based on lord shiva playing damaru. The eight artists who are proceeding towards the stage are going to present this form of art not only to entertain us but also to make us aware the present form of arts which worships lord 14 mallanna. Let the next generation also carry on with this dance form and keep the Indian tradition unique. Oggu traditional songs: These devotional songs are to worship lord shiva as mallanna and take his blessings. These folksongs are mainly heard during celebrations and marriages. ODISHA 04/09/ Krishna Leela Kansa Badha Suta Kandhei Nata (A near extinct Art) presented by Sri Balaram Behera and troupe. The String Puppet Dance (Suta Kandhei Nritya) of Odisha is well-known as GOPALILA KANDHEI NRITYA. The Subject matter of this Nritya starts from Sri Krishna Balyalila (Childhood of Sri Krishna) & until Kansa was killed.

15 Krishna Leela Kansa Badha - Suta Kandhei Nata by Sri Balaram Behera and troupe, held on September 4th at Bhubaneshwar Such near extinct Suta Kandhei Nritya presently exists only in area of village Bada Kodanda of Ghumusar Taluk. In olden days the artist of Kandhei Nritya used to go to Myanmar (Burma), Assam & Nepal to perform this art form. The construction of the toys / puppets used in such dance is extremely good and eye catching. Kandhei Nritya Guru (Puppet Dance Master) Srijukta Chaitanya Behera of Bada Kodanda is very much known throughout the country for this art form performance. 18/09/ Geeta Gobinda Sakhi Nata (Traditional Dance) presented by Sri Alok Bisoi and troupe. Sakhi Nata is one of the traditional dances still existing and performed in Odisha. In the past, Sakhinata was the prime & most important media for the spread & expansion of Chhanda and Champu of Kabisamrat Upendra Bhanja and Kabi Surya Baladev Rath. Innumerable Sakhinata group were formed in hundreds of villages of Ganjam District to entertain the audiences / viewers. The researchers opine that the dress and ornament, decoration and facial decoration of Sakhi Pila, musical instruments / music and songs have influenced the Lila & Natak traditions of the said district. It is not an exaggeration to say, the dress & decoration, 15

needs investigation. Such an excellent culture is now quite extinct. Sj.

16 Geeta Gobinda - Sakhi Nata by Sri Alok Bisoi and troupe held on September 18th at Bhubaneshwar facial decoration, tune and cadence of song and music of today s world famous Odissi Dance has much resemblance to Sakhi Nacha, which needs investigation. Such an excellent culture is now quite extinct. Sj. Alok Bisoyi efforts to revive this art form is highly admirable.
