Celebrating Dasara and Navarathri, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan too like year after year arranged an impressive range of dolls. The festival was inaugurated by senior kannada cine artist and producer Smt. Girija Lokesh, addressing the gathering, she said I feel so proud to be part of this festival here. I remember, I used to come at Bhavan for my dance rehearsals. At home, we too celebrate the festival with dolls that are a 100 years old. It is our responsibility to carry forward the tradition and pass it on to the younger generations. I feel happy being part of this celebration. Shri. A. 3 A TRIBUTE TO AN EMINENT SCHOLAR This year s Nitya Nritya, a three decade old festival by Nupura which was held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was dedicated to renowned scholar late Shri BVK Shastry on the occasion of his birth centenary. Shri. BVK Shastry, under the pen name Murali, was a celebrated music and dance critic. Recipient of around seven prestigious awards for his remarkable work, he had endeared himself to people with his humble and simple nature. Nitya Nritya was a three-day festival of dance and music. Shri. Venugopal, Regional Director ICCR, was the chief guest and Shri. Chiranjeev Singh, former ambassador to UNESCO, who also served Govt. of Karnataka, was the guest of honor. Recalling his experience and relationship with Shastry ji, Shri Chiranjeev Singh, former Ambassador UNESCO, lighting the lamp to mark the inauguration of a three day Nitya Nritya festival. 4 Shri Chiranjeev Singh, former Ambassador UNESCO cutting the ribbon to mark the inauguration of a three day stamp exhibition on classical and folk dance by Ms. N. Sridevi (standing next to Shri Chiranjeev Singh) while others join. Shri. Chiranjeev Singh said, he was a remarkable art critic. It is rare to find someone to write about all the art forms. His criticism was never harsh. In fact, it was always constructive and provided guidance to several research scholars and I m honoured to speak about him. Speaking about Shri Shastry ji, Venugopal said, he was a walking encyclopedia. He had immense knowledge about music and other arts. His paintings are also relevant. Dr. Lalitha Srinivasan, Director of Nupura, said, Shashtriji was a pioneering guru. We did programs with artists of great respect and prominence. She expressed gratitude to the Nupura team and Bhavan s staff for enabling this festival. Highlight of the day was the dance Sakhyam, depicting the eternal friendship of Krishna and Yamuna. It was performed by Anuradha, Ramaa and Radhika. 4

8 KALA BHARATHI CONVOCATION ON OCT 28. The annual Kalabharathi Diploma Examination was held on Aug 5 and 12. In all about 58 students from 9 disciplines took examinations in both theory and practicals. As done every year the question papers were set by external examiners and practical examination was assessed by them. The list of toppers in all disciplines were announced. Bhavan news congratulates all toppers and other students who have successfully completed the Diploma course. The seventeenth annual Kalabharathi convocation was held on Sunday, Oct 28, 2018 at Khincha auditorium. Prof. Mysore Nagamani Srinath, a multifaced personality, a combination of a teacher, organiser, composer, administrator, director, and a concert musician of international repute was the chief guest and she delivered the convocation address and distributed the diploma certificates and Smt. 10 BVB-INFOSYS FOUNDATION CULTURAL OUTREACH PROGRAMMES : UPDATES The Cultural Outreach program of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan-Infosys Foundation that was launched in February 2015 has seen immense success and has been extremely well received all over India. Notable programmes like The Umbrella painting workshop, Kajara Mohabbatwala, Violin Gaate Tenhva, Felicitation and Interview, Geet Ramayan, Swarbahar, Mangalagauriche khel and Bhakti Rang was organized by the Pune Kendra ( Maharashtra ). Program on Folk Dances of Rajasthan Gulabo Rajasthan ki, Desert Rytham and Sound of Desert, a painting workshop Monuments of Jaipur was organized by the Jaipur Kendra (Rajasthan ). Loka Sangeet and Mardala Vadan, Sanchar Nrutya, Folk Song of Western Odisha, Taming of the wild, Patent Medicine and Dhumpa Sangeet was organized by the Bhubaneshwar Kendra (Odisha) The Umbrella painting workshop by Smt.Asmita Vedpathak and team held on July 8th at Pune 10

13 Loka Sangeet & Mardala Vadan by Dr.Padmalaya Garabadu & troupe held on Jul 2nd at Bhubaneshwar ODISHA Loka Sangeet and Mardala Vadan was presented by Dr. Padmalaya Garabadu and troupe on 2 nd July These folk songs have been responsible for the popularity of Champu, Chaupadi (small poems), Chhanda (metre of a poem), Janana (Prayer), Bhajana (Hymn) and Kirtana (religious songs sung on streets). The unison of soft word in Pallee Sangeet and its mode of recitation entertained the listeners. Dr. Padmalaya Garabadu, Dr. Sangeeta Gosain and Sushree Sumitra Mahapatra (the three sisters) have contributed greatly towards the popularity of Pallee Sangeet of Odisha. Sanchar Nrutya was presented by Sri. Bhaktaram Bhumia and troupe on 16 th July The specialty of Sanchar Nritya is the twist footed dance with song, music and tala. The key musical instrument of Sanchar Nritya is Mridang. Sanchar Nritya echoes the calm atmosphere of silent night by a combination of sweet sound produced by the Mridang, Cymbals and Ghungura. Sanchar Nrutya by Shri. Bhaktaram Bhumia & troupe held on Jul 16th at Bhubaneshwar 13
14 Folk Song of western Odisha by Shri. Nabin Kuanar & troupe held on Aug 6th at Bhubaneshwar This western Odisha folk Art is known as another form of Utkaliya Pala. Pala means carrier and signifies transporter of Literature and Culture in coastal enka of Odisha. Similarly Daskathi and Sanchar Nritya are considered as the main tools for the spread of culture and literature in South and Western region of Odisha respectively. Sanchar Nritya is performed on the village roads during moonlight night. It is also performed in dance groups on the occasion of various yatra, Rasa Purnima and Bhagabat Parayam. Folk Song of western Odisha was presented by Shri. Nabin Kuanar and troupe on 6 th July West Odisha has a unique place in the cultural tradition of Odisha. Diverse folk songs still exist in villages of western Odisha. Amongst them which charm the audience most are Rasarkeli, Sajani, Dalkhai, Jaiphoola etc. The core subjects of western Odisha s Folk songs are based on love, affection and tales of agony of marital life. Taming of the wild was presented by Doll theatre, Kolkata on 22 nd July Dolls Theatre of Kolkata is one of the most popular Puppet Group of India. It was formed in 1990 under the leadership of Sudip Gupta. This Puppet Theatre does not use dialogues. He uses both Hindustani and Western 14

TAMING OF THE WILD is extremely attractive for children, carrying valuable messages to them. This group has performed over 1500 shows in India and abroad which include International festivals at Tehran, Israel and Spain. Patent Medicine was presented by Sanskruti Bihar on 3 rd September The Patent Medicine (Shreemati Samarjani) Opera has been written and composed by Odisha s all time Legendary Lyricist Late Shri Akshay Kumar Mohanty. It is based on Patent Medicine written by Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Patent Medicine presented by Sanskruti Bihar held on Sep 3rd at Bhubaneshwar 15
16 Dhumpa Sangeet presented by Gadadhar Dhumpa Sangeet Parisad held on Sep 17th at Bhubaneshwar Senapati which has been rejoiced by the Odiya people for the last 50 years. Vyasakabi s Patent Medicine portrays wives using brooms on their drunkard and brothel going husbands to discipline them. At various stages this drama (Opera) has been staged thousands of times under various titles carrying a strong message to the audience of the hazards of alcoholism and drug addiction. Dhumpa Sangeet was presented by Gadadhar Dhumpa Sangeet Parisad on 17 th September Dhumpa Sangeet of Khandapada is recited during rainy season, like the recitation of rain songs of North India. These songs are based on the traditional love of Radha and Krishna. The core of Dhumpa Sangeet is a musical instrument 16 named Dhumpa. The music produced by this instrument is very sweet and melodious; by hearing this the listener becomes ecstatic instantaneously. Dhumpa Sangeet is the song of rain and forest. This musical instrument Dhumpa was introduced by the Tribal in ancient times. Later its refined version seems to have manifested in the princely state of Khanda Pada and Baramba. The framer of Dhumpa Sangeet prevalent in Khandapada was Shri Gadadhar Singha Samant the renowned son of Shri Pathani Samanta, Mahamaha Upadhya the legendary astronomer. The Dhumpa is made up of the bark of Mohi or Bhendia Mardan tree found in forests. In Dhumpa Sangeet harmonium, Mardal (drum),
17 Patriotic songs by young students held on Aug 15th at Srirangam flute and small cymbals are used along with the prime instrument Dhumpa. TAMILNADU Patriotic songs by young students was presented on 15th August This excellent performance included Villu pattu (songs with the traditional musical instrument). Children of daily wage laborers and auto drivers came dressed in different costumes of National leaders and gave a brief introduction. They also gave a presentation on Swachh Bharat and Road traffic sense. Music Festival - Dasa Sinchana was presented by Vidushi Gowri Sudha Murali on 26 th August Audience enjoyed the melodious programme that consisted of Purandhara Dasa s songs. 18 Violin duet by Shri. N. C. Madhav and Shri Lakshmi Narayanan held on Aug 28, at Srirangam Temple honor was offered to all the artists. Violin Duet was presented by Shri. N.C. Madhav and Shri Lakshmi Narayanan on 28 th August It was a feast to the ear of interested audience consisting of musicians, students, critics and general public. Cold weather and drizzling rain made the environment cool and a memorable music programme. Violinist Shri. N.C. Madhav and Shri Lakshmi Narayanan started the event with varnam. Gajavathana, Thugire Rangana in Thodi Ragam and Kadhanu Variki will echo in the minds of audience. Flute duet by Master Aniruth and Guru Shri Prapanjam Mukya held on Aug 29, at Srirangam 18
19 Nadhaswaram by Srirangam Harikrishnan and troupe held on Aug 30, at Srirangam Flute Duet was presented by Master Aniruth and Guru Prapanjam on 29 th August Master Aniruth along with his guru and father Shri.Prapanjam Mukya Prana excelled in his performance. Together with his father, and he made the concert lively and divine. Nadhaswaram was presented by Srirangam Harikrishnan and Troupe on 30 th August This Nadhaswaram concert was appreciated by the audience; Srirangam Harikrishnan played compositions in all languages. His expertise over the instrument reflected in his style, which was well supported by three thavil vidwans. Veena concert was presented by Smt.R.Senkamalam and Troupe on 31 st August Smt.R.Senkamalam, an A Grade Veena Artist of All India Radio, Trichy started the recital with a brisk Varnam in Ragam Sahana. Later she played Thodi Raagam elaborately and followed by a Veena concert by Smt.R. Senkamalam and troupe held on Aug 31, at Srirangam 19
20 composition of Kadhanuvarki. She also rendered devotional Keerthanas of Saint Thyagaraja and Purandaradasa. Bharatanatyam by Shri. Parshwanath and S.Upadheye was performed on1st September Paraswanath S. Upadheye a master not only in Bharathanatyam, also acquired mastery in Karate, Kalari, Rangoli, and classical dance. Eventually he did find his feet in Bharathanatyam through his guru Ravindra Sharma. He has performed not only in India, but across the globe. WEST BENGAL AND AGARTHALA Hindustani Vocal by Shri.Arjun Roy and troupe and Santoor program by Shri. Dishari and troupe was held and Hindustani Vocal was performed by Shri Arjun Roy, who started the programme with a light classical song based on different ragas and ended with a very melodious Thumri. He was accompanied by Shri Amit Chatterjee on Tabla and Shri Samir Jana on Harmonium. Bharatanatyam by Shri. Parshwanath S. Upadheye held on Sep 1, at Srirangam The second program was Santoor which was performed by Shri Dishari accompanied by Shri Sumit Singharoy on the Tabla. Both the programmes held the audience captive. Kairali youth festival by young talents was performed on 29 th July There were more than 300 artists performing various cultural art forms like classical music, folk songs, dances which included Mohiniyattam, Bharatnatyam, 20
21 Hindusthani Vocal by Shri.Arjun Roy and troupe held on July 14th at Kolkata Tamil, Kerala, Gujrati and Punjabi Folk dances. On 14 th August 2018 a Qawwali program was presented by Shri.Santosh, Shri.Nizam and troupe. Qawwali is a form of Sufi devotional music performed in the Indian sub continent. The word qawl is an Arabic word meaning utterance. The person who repeats or sings a qawl is a qawwal. What a qawwal sings is qawwali. The program was a combination of various qawwalis performed with informative introductions and explanations interspersed throughout.
