Adding to the pageantry was the sacred torch borne by six youngsters who had made a mark with several achievements during the academic year. The flame burnt bright and steady till the day came to an end, and Jones administered the oath in solemn fashion. It was an overwhelming experience for the spectators to see such a wonderful show put up by the students, with everything Students perform holding feather dusters on event during the inaugural programme. 3

The inspired house commanders shouting out commands in Hindi reverberated through the spacious grounds, the sentiments echoed by the adulating parents and invitees. As vibrant in colour and carriage was the rhythmic mass drill of the little ones of class III, dressed in the bright colour code of white and red, holding colourful feather dusters. The end effect was a splash of myriad colours in geometric patterns. It was then a coming together of class III, IV, and V students to It s three cheers to the success of the sports day 5
6 Tiny tots of the institution participate in an event put up a Charlie Chaplin show that brought alive the comic legend. The kindergarten children literally the tiny tots of the institution, were not to be outdone either. Running here and there, representing Mary trying to catch her little lamb, the young ones, dressed in frocks and aprons, were appealing in their spontaneity. Next came the traditionally-dressed fishermen, rowing their boats to the victory line! An exhilarating day for the children, and a heartening one for the audience, the 2015 Sports- Day will remain fresh in memory. Children participate in an event 6

8 Solo recital of Vani One has seen Bharatanatya dancer Vani Ganapathy teaming up with other dancers to experiment with new themes, Dwaaram being her latest theatrical presentation that was easily comprehensible and entertaining as well. A similar earnest and serious attitude is seen in her solo recitals, reason enough to make it to the Bhavan on Jan. 9, when she goes on stage under the Horizon series of ICCR and BVB, at the Khincha Hall at 6.30 pm. WATCH OUT FOR JAN 9, 15, 23, 24, Ku. Anu Jain to the weary urban eye, whether she experiments with acrylic or water colours. That she loves nature is obvious not only because landscapes, flowers and birds dominate the theme, Smt. Vani Ganapathy Painting Exhibition Appealing, light colour combinations, proportion and beauty mark the art works of Anu Jain whose palate is balm 8 Paintings of Anu Jain
9 Bhavan from Jan.15, between 11 am and 6 pm at ESV Hall, E. Hanumantha Rao Art Gallery. Harmonium concert Paintings of Anu Jain but because they are so soft and extraordinarily pretty. Anu, born with arms only up to her elbows, and legs up to the knees, has risen far above her extremely limiting circumstances, and has found sustenance in art, inspiring and emotionally supporting society in turn. A eight-day art exhibition of her works has been organized at the 9 Vidwan C. Ramdas Vidwan C Ramadas will present a harmonium recital at MES College, Malleswaram, 15 th cross, on Jan. 23, under the BVB Infosys Foundation Cultural Outreach Programme, at 6 pm. Harmonium disappeared as an accompanying instrument to Carnatic music concerts decades ago, making way for the violin. In this scenario, not many players are there as harmonium soloists. Ramadas has tenaciously clung on, the gamaka he brings to his instrument drawing an appreciating audience to his concerts. The continuity that Ramadas brings to his notes is
10 what gives his music that palpable bhava. This is a rare outing not to be missed, if only for the instrument which is heard so little now, leave alone in a fullfledged solo recital. Ethno music with a Zing Smt. Anasuya Kulkarni The world premiere of a percussion-string-wind instrument music ensemble with absolutely no western instruments yet with the resonating sound effect of popular music will be held on Jan 24, at the Bhavan, heralding perhaps a new concept of orchestral music which proudly focuses exclusively on the musical instruments of non-western countries, to arrive at a unique and rich music conglomeration. Pancha Vaadhya Naadha Vaibhava, a brainchild of musician Anasuya Kulkarni, based on the Pancha thatva (s), will be a coming together of 25 instruments drawn from Indonesia, India, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and South Africa, with pancha swara ragas, pancha nadais, pancha styles of music, pancha varna, in keeping with the theme. A slideshow on the pancha thatvas will form a backdrop to the music event. Anasuya, who has adapted the Indonesian anklung to different genres of music, and who has a vast collection of music instruments from all over the world, is directing the show, slated at a.m. Barrel drum, engalobi, goblet drum, embutu and donodrum comprise the foreign percussions to be complemented by the Indian mridangam, kanjira, ghatam, table and morsing. The anklung, along with adunga, krar, violin, veen, and gotu vadya, besides supporting instruments such as shankha, sli drum, gantorat, tom tom, and silnen will complete the ensemble. Entry to all events is free. - Jyothi Raghuram 10

12 OBITUARIES : BHAVAN S JOURNAL PATRIARCH BIDS ADIEU FROM AFAR Sri. V.N. Narayanan More than a journalistic touch was brought to the Bhavan s Journal from 1999, when seasoned journalist V N Narayanan took over as its editor. Retaining the essence of the journal, several interesting columns were introduced, with a non-political editorial adorning it as a prized feature. Perhaps one of the most celebrated newspaper editors of the country some twenty years ago, VNN became most visible as a scribe with nerves of steel during his tenure as Editor of Hindustan Times, New Delhi, his last newspaper job before he became a Bhavanite. He was a founding member of the Chandigarh 12 Kendra, his association with Bhavan preceding his editorship of Bhavan s Journal. What struck one immediately about VNN was his phenomenal memory. A prolific reader of every genre of book from spirituality to history, he brought nuggets of information from his readings into his writing, giving both an intellectual and variegated thrust to them. His book-lined shelves at his office in the Bhavan, from many of which he could quote off-hand, is testimony to this. His tenure as Editor-in- Chief of The Tribune coincided with the height of terrorism in Punjab. Unwavering in his sense of journalistic ethics despite personal danger to him, VNN wrote fearlessly. This was undoubtedly the crowning glory of his career. Bhavan took as much pride in publishing some of his books such as Encounters Real and Surreal and God s own Marxist (which he edited) about his famed journalist-father V K Narasimhan, as VNN did in writing them. Every article of
13 his was more a literary masterpiece than a piece of mere journalistic writing, with a whole lot of apparently disparate elements thrown in to arrive at a brilliant thesis. This was of essence to VNN as a writer, and a memorable piece of literature couched in journalism, for the reader. Ailing for several months, VNN left to Singapore in November to recuperate with his daughters families, with the hope of getting back to Bhavan in December, which was not to be. His end came on Dec. 5, a peaceful bidding of adieu from afar. Having been associated with Bhavan s HB College of Communication and Management earlier, it is a large family that feels bereaved here. Music Lineage that permeated Bhavan Sri. S. Krishnamurthy When public figures pass away, it is their body of work that remains their legacy, naturally enough. Those in close contact with them recall their personal attributes. Some however are long remembered in institutions they served perhaps decades ago, the nostalgic memories percolating to newer staff too. All this holds true about musicologist S Krishnamurthy, whose association with the Bengaluru Kendra of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, revereberated as a classical music hub, an informal academic centre for interactions with musicologists and Samskritam scholars, and a lively club of earthy intellectuals. A healthy disregard for taking life too seriously, despite all that he had achieved, found expression in his mischievous sense of humour the spontaneous wit gathering him 13
14 fans and admirers all around, as much as his musical and academic accomplishments. Krishnamurthy passed away in Bengaluru on December 5. It is not just the loss of a musician and musicologist that the Bhavan mourns. His association with Bhavan is part of the art citadel that the Bengaluru Kendra grew into, SKM, converting Bhavan into a pivot of music happenings of varied strains. A substantial cultural link of the Bhavan has been lost with his demise. The lineage of musician and composer Mysore Vasudevacharya was an illustrious ancestry that Krishnamurthy, as his grandson, carried forward into the limelight, as director of All India Radio, Mysuru, for over three decades, author of several books, and as an authority on western systems of music. His father, Subramaniam, was a Hindustani musician and a percussionist, and his brother, Rajaram, headed Kalakshetra of Chennai. Krishnamurthy s close association with the Mysore Wodeyars foremost among Indian royalty in nurturing arts, cascaded into a multifaceted music journey. A young jaltarang vidwan at the Mysuru palace, to which music ambience he had already been introduced through his grandfather who was Aasthaana Vidwan of the Wodeyars, SKM, a graduate of Trinity College, London, was the progenitor of amalgamating western and Indian classical notes into a native mould. This legendary lineage that SKM poured into the Bhavan as Programme Director ( ) was the pinnacle of Bhavan s music outflow under Bhavan s Vadyavrinda some 40 cassettes of western and Indian orchestral music, and new ideas of presentations setting a template that holds good for us at the Bhavan even today. Much earlier to this, as a Bhavanite without a portfolio, he was a regular to be found in the portals of the Bengaluru Kendra, interacting and throwing up ideas for music activities, a saga of over two decades. It is this association with us that we cherish, even after his presence is long gone. - Jyothi Raghuram 14
