MESSAGE OF BHAGAVATHA 2
Ever since its inception in the year 1938, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan has been an ambassador of preserving ancient Indian Heritage with a mission to pass the beacon of our culture to the future generations. With a mélange of activities linked through performing arts, seminars and institutionalized teachings, the Bengaluru Kendra has strived to take our history, traditions and customs to the common man by pioneering diverse programmes. Revival of fading arts from across our land and conducting international conferences on Indian scriptures are a few examples of the invaluable contribution pioneered by the Bengaluru Kendra. These events have seen a surge in youth participation au contraire to the belief that ancient Indian culture and tradition interests only senior section of the society. ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON INDIAN SCRIPTURES 3 MESSAGE OF BHAGAVATA The Bengaluru Kendra, with an unconditional support from ISKCON Bengaluru, has successfully conducted mega annual conferences on Indian scriptures of antiquity and world literature. Veda Samvada in 2013, Upanishad Sandesha in 2014, Message of Mahapuranas in 2015 and Message of Mahakavyas in 2016 saw more than 250 doctoral scholars participate and present more than 300 papers. Every discussion pertaining to the paper presented in the conference mirrored present day relevance. With over 25 scholars being honored, the conferences brought together intellect, literary and cultural. This year too, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bengaluru and ISKCON are coming together for a seminar called Message of Bhagavata where cosmology,

A TWO-DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR ON KANNADA CINEMA: LITERARY, PHILOSOPHICAL CONTEXT The national conference on Kannada Cinema: Literary, Philosophical Context held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore, on April 22 & 23, 2017, set a benchmark not only for the deliberations it intended to achieve, but also for the way it was conducted. A debate of this scale, initiated by Benaka, a Bangalore-based premier cultural institute, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), under the leadership of renowned film maker T. S. Nagabharana, was undoubtedly a need of the hour for the Kannada cinema industry. The themes chosen for the deliberations, the resource persons invited and the amount of research reflected in their presentations, the framework in which the sessions were conducted, provided an academic discipline to the entire seminar. It is often said one who doesn t remember his roots, cannot achieve prosperity, and there have been concerns about Kannada cinema that the people in the industry are detaching from the roots. The introductory words by T. S. Nagabharana, the Director of the seminar, themselves reflected this concern. He said : Today, cinema has Sri. T.S. Nagabharana addressing the audience. While from left - Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh, Sri. Hamsalekha and Sri. N. Vidyashankar. 12
Veteran scholar Prof. S.R. Leela handing over the certificate to a participant while film maker Sri. S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu joins. become a no man s land when everything is available in the cell phone. There is a feeling that anybody can do anything here; but such a feeling is not a good sign. On the lines of this concern, the two-day deliberations raised certain serious questions for the introspection of all the stakeholders of Kannada cinema. Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, ace film director from Mumbai, made significant observations regarding similarities and differences between the Bollywood and Kannada cinema and observed that a national seminar of the same stature needed to be conducted in connection with Indian cinema. Sri Srinath, eminent actor, and 13 Sri H. N. Suresh, Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, witnessed this meaningful inaugural. The first session had eminent personalities like Sri Prakash Belavadi and Sri Sandeep Balakrishna as resource persons and veteran critic Prof. C. N. Ramachandran as its chairperson. Sri Belavadi, who spoke on Kannada cinema and the Kannada identity, questioned how one could term something as Kannada cinema if there was nothing of Kannada in it except its language. Sri Balakrishna, who spoke on Kannada movies with historical themes made subtle observations that the historical movies came
up in the recent years lacked the originality and aesthetics of those movies produced in the sixties and seventies. In his presidential remarks, Prof. Ramachandran observed that the Kannada identity in movies could be traced in their experimental initiatives like Mysuru Mallige, Samskara, Puttakkana Highway, and those which had reflected the folk life (like that of Nagamandala ). The second session, chaired by renowned litterateur Prof. H. S. Venkateshmurthy, had veteran journalists Dr. Babu Krishnamurthy (Bhakti movement and Kannada cinema) and Sri M. K. Bhaskar Rao (Novels and Kannada cinema) and senior critic Dr. N. S. Sridharmurthy (Kannada poetic tradition and Kannada cinema) on the panel. Dr. Babu Krishnamurthy, who opined that no other movies influenced Indians so immensely other than those with Bhakti theme, emphasized that such movies saved India and its culture. Analyzing the influence of Kannada poetic tradition on Kannada cinema, Sri Sridharmurthy noted that Kannada movies gave the common audience what the modern poetry did not give. 14 Sri Bhaskar Rao stressed the need for treating authors on par with the heroes. In his presidential remarks, Prof. Venkateshmurthy observed that litterateurs would not have the freedom of their own while writing for movies, which would be one of the reasons for many writers could not involve themselves in the cinema field. The second day started with an illuminative session chaired by renowned composer Sri Hamsalekha. Well-known scholar Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh spoke on Epics and Kannada cinema and noted that epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata were not made movies completely in Kannada, which happened in other languages like Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. He also told that epic-based movies in Kannada lacked authenticity and professionalism. Sri N. Vidyashankar, who spoke on Experiments in new wave cinema, discussed the question why Kannada movies were not being made for the global audience. Sri T. S. Nagabharana analyzed the impact of theatre on Kannada cinema, and observed that Kannada
cinema which was the extension of theatre in the early days, was in turn influencing the theatre now. In his presidential remarks, Sri Hamsalekha said Kannada cinema should have made the best use of technology, but it was being used only for gimmicks. He stressed that there had been a large gap between Kannada cinema and technology. The fourth session was chaired by veteran singer Dr. B. K. Sumithra. Presenting a paper on Female characters in Kannada cinema, eminent writer Smt. Pratibha Nandakumar observed that the Kannada movies were dominated by male gaze and there had been no space for female gaze. There would be some relief to this issue if women directors inculcate feministic tendencies in them, she noted. Journalist Bharathi Hegde discussed the Question of self of women in Kannada cinema and emphasized that there was need for change in the attitudes of producers, directors and heroes towards women. Special demonstrations on Bhakti music in Kannada cinema by Pandit Nagaraj Havaldar on the first day and on Dance tradition in Kannada cinema by 15 artiste Dr. Sridhar on the second day made the evenings added a new dimension to the seminar. The valedictory ceremony was graced by ace film maker Sri S. V. Rajendra Singh Babu and veteran scholar Prof. S.R. Leela. Sri Babu was not just humoristic when he said Even though the underworld has left the swords and guns, the film industry is not ready to leave them, pointing at the diminishing sensitivities in the commercial Kannada cinema. Prof. S.R. Leela, who witnessed the two-day proceedings completely, noted that the seminar had broken the monotonous oneway deliberations taking place in connection with the cinema field. The words of Prof. Leela, who was also the representative of ICPR from Karnataka, rightly summarized the seminar. The event also raised certain important questions, which showed the avenues for the future discussions. The seminar director Sri. T. S. Nagabharana and convener Sri N. S. Sridharmurthy certainly deserve great appreciations for organizing such a meaningful, milestoneevent.
