Granted, you must be of a certain age to be able to identify some of the couples mentioned. As we begin the Love Month of February, let us enter into it with these possibilities: Send someone a text, an , a card expressing your appreciation of their commitment to the Church. Identify someone in the Church who has a need and help ease that need by anonymously helping that person or family. Encourage someone who is having one of those days with an encouraging smile or word. Make an expression of thanksgiving to the One who loved the Church and gave His life for it. Physically, Verbally, Sacrificially, find a way to tell Christ you love Him and His Church. And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.. But the greatest of these is love. 2 Cathy Lyon, Shiloh s Middle School Youth Minister by Kerry Childers hile Cathy s parents, Sue and Gary Carle, lived W in Fredericksburg for the first few years of her life, she grew up right here in King George along with her younger sister, Debbie. She attended Oakland Baptist Church from the time she was a toddler until she moved back to King George as an adult. She attended Mrs. Kline s Nursery School at age 4. Ironically, she stayed with those same classmates pretty much until she graduated from high school. Summer is and always has been her favorite season. She was an Eden Estates Eel from the time she could swim until she graduated (Go Eels Swim Fast!); she vacationed in Ocean City, Maryland, every summer usually around her birthday. While in Ocean City, they would spend most of their time either on the beach at the ocean or crabbing on the bay. She tells this memorable story: One summer, I had been out crabbing all day so it was on my mind that the bay was full of them. I started drinking a soda (a Faygo to be exact!) and, while I was trying to get that last precious drop out of the soda can, I inadvertently started to walk backwards right off the pier! Thank goodness I could swim! I quickly swam back to the surface (I still remember what it looked like underwater), and a friend s father pulled me out. I ran back to the room and told my mom what had happened. She laughed and laughed because the only thing I was afraid of was a crab biting me! Another incident Cathy remembers well had to do with their backyard swing set. Her dad had taught her how to cut the grass using their lawn tractor (in 2 nd gear so she wasn t going anywhere quickly). One day as she was cutting the grass, she was too lazy to stop and move the swings out of her way. Instead she just played dodge em while cutting in and around the swing set. Her laziness caught up to her when one of the swings caught the hood of the tractor. Did she stop NO! She just kept on going. She ended up bending the top bar of the swing set and the hood of the tractor. Good thing we had outgrown that swing set! she said. She survived the incident but her dad was none too pleased! Having grown up in church, it was a natural course for her to become a Christian at an early age. She was baptized at the age of 10 at Oakland. That s actually another funny story, she says. I was a swimmer from a very early age, and swimmers float. So after I was baptized, the pastor came out into the sanctuary laughing. My parents wondered what was so funny about my baptism. Despite standing on my toes, when he put me backwards to submerse my head, my feet popped up out the water! I guess that had never happened before! Having always been a beach person, Cathy went to college in Norfolk, Virginia, at Old Dominion University, majoring in Industrial/Organizational Psychology Cathy shares her love of the beach with Jon, her husband. with an emphasis in Counseling. Following college, she moved back to King George and took up a career at GEI- CO in Fredericksburg. When the opportunity arose to move back to the Virginia Beach area with her employer, she jumped at it. She and Jon met while working at GEI- CO in Fredericksburg and started dating after they had both relocated to the beach. They were married on September 30, 2000, and started their family the following year. Shortly after Jordan was born, GEICO asked her to move back to the Fredericksburg office so they relocated as family to their current home. Shortly after Gabby was born, she left her full time career to pursue being a fulltime mom. Jon continued his career at GEICO and has been there for over 20 years. He works nights, which works out well for their homeschooling family. Some things in her life have remained quite consistent. She still loves the beach, the summer, oysters, crabs, and fun with friends. She also enjoys crafting, scrapbooking, and outdoor games like horseshoes. However with working part time at the YMCA as well as serving our families as Middle School Youth Minister her hobbies often take a backseat. She figures she s a lot like her dad in that sense, always moving even when she should probably take a seat. Her dad taught her a lot about faith and how to live it day to day. Those who knew him would likely agree that she s a lot like him. He was somewhat gruff around the edges, but everybody always knew where they stood and there was no mistaking what he was made of. She misses him but knows she will see him again! Her dad passed away in Note: Stephen Hagewood is our High School Youth Minister. 3 Youth Group Don't forget to join us for Bible study on Wednesday nights after supper. On Sunday evenings at 4 pm we meet for our Creative Ministries Teams. We have drama, music, and we've now added a card ministry to reach out to those in need of a kind word. The youth are hosting a VALENTINE BAN- QUET on Saturday, February 11th to help them raise money for summer camp and summer missions. Tickets are on sale now and available from any of our youth. The cost is $25/couple or $15/ individual. The menu is a variety of pasta dishes and dessert and your evening will be finished with fabulous entertainment. Childcare is available (for a donation) and there will also be a to-go option for those that do not wish to stay for the sit down dinner. We look forward to your support in helping to make this a fabulous event for our youth and for our congregation. Are you willing to travel to Southwest Virginia for a week? If inclement weather occurs over a weekend, check our website, kgshiloh.org, for schedule changes. When King George County schools are closed due to severe weather, all church activities scheduled for that evening will be canceled. Children s Ministry It s hard to believe Christmas is behind us, the new year is here and Valentine s day is around the corner! Mark your calendars for Friday, February 24th! We will be having our Family Game Night in the FLC starting at 5:30. Please bring your favorite game to play - bring anything from Go Fish to Twister but please refrain from bringing any game that involves gambling or doesn t support the family friendly Christian environment. Along with your favorite game, please bring your favorite soup and/ or dessert to share. Even if your family is grown, come out and join us for a night of fun and fellowship! 4 Sunday School Wondering about Sunday School? Is it oldfashioned, outdated and obsolete? Has it become irrelevant and unnecessary? Or, could it be that we have forgotten some of the basic reasons why the Sunday School was so vital in the first place? Sunday School is the place to teach the importance of Scripture to our children, teens, and adults and to disciple them in their Christian walk. Sunday School remains one of the church's most powerful ways to affirm the Word of God as the foundation for living the Christian life. The goal of Sunday School is to reach lost people for Jesus. Through Sunday School, we challenge all ages to be disciples of Jesus Christ and to invite others to do the same. Sunday School is the place where we help each other live the Holy life. Shiloh has Sunday School for all ages: nursery through senior adult. Come share in fellowship, love, spiritual growth, family. Classes start at 9:45; coffee, juice and breakfast sweets available at 9:15 in the Family Life Center. I am really excited to get started on preparation for the Easter season. It really is the best time of the year! We are starting to rehearse for our spring/easter musical production "The Choice." We need people for speaking parts, non speaking roles, costume makers, set builders, stage hands...you name it! Come and get involved. The production will take place Saturday, April 22 at 5:00 p.m. and then again on Sunday, April 23 at 10:45 a.m. (yes early church!) and it is the story of the Roman Soldier who finds himself at the foot of the cross and what it does to him. 5 Women of Shiloh Hats On for the Ladies Tea!! Get ready for the annual Ladies Tea! This year it will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at 2:00pm. Our guest speaker is Rev. Jennifer Mullins. Jennifer is the proud wife of Rev. Rusty Mullins and mother of 3 children. She was the BCM director at Radford University until just this past December. Her husband is now pastoring a church in Mechanicsville, VA, so they have moved to the Mechanicsville area. The theme for the tea is Our Hats His Crown. We, as women, wear many hats during our lifetime. Often, we experience trials while wearing those hats. But if we continue to persevere and live as Christ would have us to live, we will receive the Crown of Life His crown! Our theme verse is: Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12) If you are interested in hosting a table, please contact Sharon Band. We were packed last year, so sign up early!! Shiloh Women s Gathering coming in March!! Even though our tea is planned in March, we ll also gather on March 11 at 9:30am in the Family Life Center. Put it on your calendar and come out for fun, devotions and fellowship with the Women of Shiloh! THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU!! On Saturday, January 14, 35 ladies worked for 2 and a half hours and produced 44 blankets for the homeless! What a great turn out for a great mission! The blankets were delivered on Tuesday, January 17 to the homeless while Shiloh provided the meal for them. Saturday, February pm Family Life Center This ministry will be making pillowcases for Case for Smiles, a national pillowcase campaign, that distributes to Children's hospitals and Hospice facilities Supplies Needed: 2/3 yard - main fabric: non-directional print, nonstretchy (means the pattern isn't just going one way) 1/2 yard - accent cuff in coordinating color 1/4 yard - accent piping (if desired, but not 100% necessary) If you have a sewing machine, please bring it so the church machines can be used by people who have no access to a machines.
