1 October 2016 Glorifying God by Reaching, Building, Serving From Randy... These were the words of the last song we sang before the renovation of our sanctuary began: Lord, prepare me to be sanctuary Pure and holy, tried and true; With thanksgiving, I ll be a living sanctuary for You These words will also be the first that are sung in our renovated sanctuary. As you read this article we will already be worshiping in the Family Life Center. Thank you for being living sanctuaries wherever we are having worship services. In the book, How To Change Your Church (without killing it), it is written, It s not changes that kill us; it s the transitions. It s the transitions that are the tricky part. It s the transitions that require communication because things are not being done the same. It s the transitions that take us out of our comfort zone. It s the setting up and taking down of the chairs in the Family Life Center for Sunday morning worship, for Sunday night Awana, for Wednesday night dinners that require cooperation. It s the worship team, the choir, the musicians all needing to adjust their schedules to fit into a different time period that will require cooperation. It s the ushers learning to redirect people to places in our facilities in addition to handing out bulletins, hymnals, and Bibles that will require them to go beyond their normal tasks that will require a cooperative spirit. It s having to sit in a different seat, walking extra footsteps from Sunday School and entering in a different door to worship that will require of us to have cooperative spirits. It is why the song, Sanctuary, was chosen as our last song before the renovation of our sanctuary started. We are God s sanctuary. And we will need cooperative attitudes and spirits as we walk through this transition period. Questions? Oh yes. Chaos? Most definitely. Testing of patience? You know it! As we renovate His sanctuary, may He prepare us to be living sanctuaries too. 2 A Gentle Giant Once Passed Our Way by Joe Parker O nce upon a time, there was a gentle giant that passed our way. If you look over on the right side of the church about four rows back, you may find the pew not as full as it once was. Every Sunday you would find a gentle, quiet, smiling young man with a crew-cut sitting on the end of that pew. He was a caring, loving, full-of-life giant of a man. He was the kind of man that, if you ever happened to meet, you would have instantly become friends. We at Shiloh were amongst the privileged to have known and to have loved this giant of a man named Billy Harrison Clatterbuck, Jr., known by all as simply Billy. Billy was born and raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the little hamlet of Brightwood, Virginia. Some call this part of Virginia, God s Country. There is no more beautiful sight than to look westward, from where he was raised, to see the sun settling down for the evening as you watch the evening shades of blue softly outline the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge. The values instilled by his loving mom and dad, the special love he shared with Angela and their family, and his love for the land and nature all inspired in Billy a desire to achieve magnificence in his life, his family, his craftsmanship, and his many accomplishments. We may question why this young man, of only 48 years of age, was swiftly whisked from our lives. God may have been in need of a really good craftsman or an individual always willing to help or do anything. He may have needed someone with a lot of patience, or He just didn t want Billy to suffer any longer yet, we all struggle with the proverbial elephant-in-the-room question as to WHY. It s during a time like this, our faith must rely on the promise Jesus made in John 11: Although Billy is no longer with us in body, his spirit will long remain. Anytime you encounter Peyton, Braden, Gracie, or Ashley you will remember Billy and know his spirit is with us. Should Gracie and Winston Perry ever again sing The Battle of Jericho, you will know his spirit will be amongst us for sure he was one proud dad. When the walls of Shiloh resonate with the beautiful voice of Angela singing, you will know Billy will be listening just off to the side and smiling brightly. When Billy left this world, I was reminded of the lyrics of an old gospel song paraphrased here: He ll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan, he'll be waiting drawing pictures in the sand and when he sees Angela coming he will rise up with a shout and come running through the shallow waters reaching for her hand. It s so true, each of us will all leave something behind when we go: family, friends, houses, cars, crops in the fields, gardens, etc. But what s most important is the touch of that person s gentle hand. Billy touched many people and left his mark on the hearts of the many he touched along the way. There is a major difference between a man who neglects his garden and the gardener who lovingly tends his garden. The difference is the loving touch of that man s hands and how he encourages his garden to flourish. Just look around at his family and his many friends, and you will find Billy was a mighty fine gardener. As we approach this year s Harvest Party at the end of this month, we can t help but remember Billy Clatterbuck and all the love he gave to our children and community. We will be forever grateful for him God s good and faithful Servant. Rest in peace, dear friend. We at Shiloh will long remember the loving touch of Billy s hand on each of us and will long remember that once upon a time, a gentle loving giant of a man passed our way.

3 Upcoming Events October 1 Youth Group Area 51 The Shiloh Youth Ministry activities are off to a great start! Thank you parents and volunteers for making this a smooth transition for our teenagers. You may have noticed some changes in our Sunday activities. We are meeting all together on Sunday mornings prior to Sunday school for a brief time of fellowship, snacks, and announcements. If you would like to provide a snack for our teens on a Sunday morning, please contact Stephen Hagewood. On Sunday evenings, we have implemented our Creative Ministries Team and the teens are currently preparing music and drama for our Children s Church Takeover on October 30th. We have a new, private Shiloh Area 51 Facebook group where the calendar events will be posted, pictures can be shared, and we can send out general communication to parents and students. If you would like to be added to that group, please contact Stephen Hagewood. Middle School Youth Ministry Needs We need an assistant in our Sunday school class and Wednesday night Bible study. If you are willing to help in either class (even on a rotational basis), please contact Cathy Lyon (youth@kgshiloh.org). High School Youth Ministry Needs We need an assistant in our Youth Girls Sunday school class as well as our Wednesday night Bible study. Please contact Stephen Hagewood (youth@kgshiloh.org) if you can lend a hand. King George Fall Festival Parade Saturday, October 8 Shiloh s float is in need of walkers and riders. We will be collecting candy throughout the month of October for the Harvest Party. Collection boxes will be located outside of the office and in the Family Life Center near the kitchen. We will also be in need of volunteers to help with the games and sign-up sheets will be posted outside of the office. Lastly, we will need lots of CAKES for our famous cake walk! 4 Outreach Operation Christmas Child It s that time of year again time to fill shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Through this ministry, each one of us has an opportunity to bless a child in another country this Christmas with a gift to bring them joy, help meet their needs and most importantly, to open the door for them to hear the Gospel. Over 100 million shoeboxes have been delivered to children in over 130 different countries since the ministry s beginning in Along with items such as coloring books, socks, toothbrushes, small toys, hard candy, brushes/ combs, etc., that you choose to provide, each shoe box is delivered with The Greatest Journey booklet in the child s local language. The Greatest Journey is a follow-up program that introduces children to salvation through Jesus Christ and teaches them to become His faithful followers. Many students who graduate receive a Bible in their own language. And you and your family can be a part of this evangelism opportunity! 5 Sunday School A recent article on LifeWay.com spoke of ways we can share the gospel with our kids. Here is the first of the four suggestions offered in the article How to Share the Gospel with Your Kids by Kelly Mikhailiuk. (The remaining three suggestions will be forthcoming in upcoming issues of this newsletter. It is my hope that these suggestions will inspire conversation with your children and help you help them identify with Christ.) Here is the introduction and first recommendation. Our children begin to define themselves at a very young age, and the search for identity intensifies as they approach adolescence. Like all of us, our children will default to finding their identity in what others think or expect defining themselves by performance or status or in their own passions, desires, dreams or goals. But what if they defined themselves by what the Bible says? What our children (and ourselves) need most is to know and believe the truth about who we are in Christ. Below you will find the first of a few tips on how to share the gospel with your child along with a few follow-up questions. Whether this is your first talk or your hundredth, it is our prayer that God will guide your words and actions every step of the way. Say this: "You are created in God s image." So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. Genesis 1:27 For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother s womb. I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and I know this very well. Psalm 139:13-14 God created everything, but only human beings are made in His own image we re made to be like God and live in relationship with Him. God knows us best because He carefully formed every tiny detail of our bodies and minds. He made each of us just the way He wanted we are all remarkably and wonderfully made and He planned out all our days before we were even born. Ask These Questions: Look at yourself in a mirror. What do you see? What do you think God sees? Think about the people in your life in your family, church, community, school. What difference does it make when you think of them as individuals wonderfully made by God in His image? While we are always inviting pre-kindergarten to sixth grade students to join our club, the invitation is extended to everyone reading this newsletter. It takes a church It means so much to children when adults spend just a little quality time with them. And contributing to a child s spiritual growth would be very rewarding to you. Being able to build a relationship with a youngster, by helping them learn God s word, is a firsthand demonstration of Christian love taught at our Church. Just one or two Sundays a month, getting to know these children, would add joy and satisfaction to your life. And who knows, you may find a new friend to greet every Sunday morning, too. Children's choirs will be featured on the 3rd Sunday on the month as they are prepared. Sounds of Praise is busy working on Sunday music and Christmas music.
