1 October 2018 Glorifying Go d by Reaching, Building, Serving From Randy... October is a month that brings not only the cooler weather and colorful leaves, it also brings a multitude of opportunities for the church to worship, reach out, and be reminded of God s purpose for His church. The observance of the Church s two ordinances will take place the last Sunday in September and the first Sunday in October. Sunday, September 30, we will be observing the ordinance of baptism for those professing their belief in Jesus as their personal Savior. Sunday, October 7, we will, as a church, be observing the ordinance of Communion for those who will partake of the bread and juice in remembrance of the sacrifice made by Jesus on the cross. On Sunday, October 14, we will have a Gideon speaker share a testimony of the work the Gideons are doing in this community as well as around the world. We have Gideons in our church who are committed in sharing the Gospel message through the ministry of the Gideons. Then come two opportunities for us as a church to be a light to our community as well as to gather together. Our Harvest Party will be held on Friday, October 26. It is the one event that brings more guests to our church at one time than any other event we do. Games for adults, youth, and children make up our fun time. This year the staff will be intentionally introducing ourselves to those in attendance so new relationships can be developed. Volunteers are needed! Hopefully you will be able to give some of your time that night to be a part of a great outreach opportunity to our community. At the time of this writing, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. is the scheduled time for this year s event. And something new in October Trunk and Treat October 31 6 to 7 p.m. Trunk and Treat is an activity that some churches use to give a spiritual presence at Halloween. Several things are needed: candy, volunteers, and your vehicle. That s right, vehicles. Cars and trucks to be decorated with biblical themes or with positive, nonthreatening decorations. We will eat our Wednesday meal from 5:15-5:45 p.m. then go outside where our decorated vehicles will be available for those who come onto church grounds to receive candy and spiritual encouragement. Some on our staff have experience decorating for Trunk and Treat. I m looking forward to our first time. If you want to be a part of this outreach event, please let the office know or let a staff member know. We need lots of vehicles to show God s loving presence. 2 How Shiloh s Youth Spent Their Summer Break (Part 2) his is Part 2 of a two-part series of In the Spotlight, dedicated to sharing a summary of our youth mission trips. This T article provides in their own words the experiences our youth enjoyed during their summer break. Their individual stories tell of a summer filled with adventures far from home and reveal amazing works for the Lord. Dana Jensen. This summer I went to camp Piankatank. I went one week as a camper, and two weeks as a S.A.L.T. S.A.L.T. stands for Service and Leadership Training. My first week was a training week. I learned about different leadership styles by observing a cabin and their counselors for an activity and also watched how the counselors would work with the kids and each other. During the second week, I was paired with a counselor to shadow for the week. I was given leadership roles throughout the whole week, no matter what the activity was I always had a responsibility. My experience this summer was not only amazing but gave me confirmation that I would like to work in children s ministry. Jordan Lyon. This summer I interned at Fort Caroline Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. Working alongside the children s pastor, I prepared curriculum for Sunday mornings, designed and helped to lead a VBS and went on a mission trip to Lakeland, Florida. VBS preparation was intense; we expected around three hundred kids to join us for a three-day, high-energy experience. Lots of copying, cutting, and organizing leading up to the first day resulted in some pretty long hours. As well as preparing, I also led the second and third grade team, helping leaders to navigate curriculum, calm wild kids, and make many snack runs. However, all the hard work and long hours panned out as we had a total attendance of two hundred and sixty kids. Towards the end of my trip, I got the opportunity to go with the youth group to serve the Florida Baptist Children s Home. There we did a shortened version of VBS for the children who lived on campus as well as a day camp that cared for kids while their parents worked. We also did some yard work and served in the Compassion Center, where unwanted or damaged food is donated by stores and given away to families in need. I had a life-changing summer, and I thank you for your prayers. Shane Hagewood. Hello Shiloh Family! Mexico was a great trip. We had many opportunities to witness and go to services. We even had a service our first night there! We learned a new drama and performed that one and others, several times. We always did street ministering when we could. On Thursday, we left for San Cristobal. We stopped along the way and did some dramas and street ministering. Once there, we did more dramas, street ministering and attending services. I enjoyed playing soccer with the kids there. On our last day, we had the opportunity to go shopping and sightsee some. I thank you for the support, both financial and prayer, for our trip to Chiapas, Mexico. Savannah Hagewood. Hi! Mexico was AWESOME! It was a great opportunity for me to go down and see what God is doing in the people of Chiapas, Mexico. We attended five different services and one service on our first night there. We learned a new drama our first night, which added to the two we learned before we left. We performed in several different places. I saw the dramas touch the lives of the people and saw many get saved. We also got to meet some of the children. May I say the children love to play tu which is what we call tag. It was so fun meeting, talking, playing, and sharing the love of Jesus to the people of Chiapas, Mexico. I fully appreciate the love and support of my church family. I can t wait to go back!

Also during October, the Sunday youth ministry activities will start work on a new Christmas musical! Winter Blast at Camp Piankatank is coming up, February The cost is $100 per camper due October 15 so don t forget to sign up now! Sunday School By Gail Davis Our new Sunday School year is off to a great start with great volunteers to teach, new students in our classes, great fellowship, and our first Sunday School continental breakfast. There s nowhere else better to be on Sunday mornings than spending time studying the Word and enjoying the companionship of like-minded friends. Don t miss out on what God is doing in the lives of His children at Shiloh. Classes start at 9:45, and you are always welcome here. Fall is here and it s time for the leaves to start turning colors, which means our Harvest Party is around the corner! It will be held on October 26th from 6 to 8 p.m. We will have food, games, a cake walk, a hay ride, bouncy houses, and for those who missed it last year the Tumbleweed will be back! Save the date and invite your friends to this great community outreach event! We will be collecting candy throughout the month of October for the Harvest Party. Collection boxes will be located outside the office and in the Family Life Center near the kitchen. We will also be in need of volunteers to help with the games, and sign-up sheets will be posted outside of the office. Lastly, we will need lots of CAKES for our famous cake walk! Sign-up sheets for cakes (or cookies) will also be posted outside the office. AWANA got off to an exciting start this year with 13 clubbers returning to have fun, learn God s word, and grow in the Lord. We will be meeting at the Family Life Center at 5:00 p.m. and will complete AWANA time at 6:30 to enjoy a snack supper with all the AWANA kids and our youth. Come out and join us and see what God s word can do in the hands of a child. Adults are welcome as well; we always need folks to work with the children each week. Please contact the AWANA Commander, Jim Jensen, at if you have any questions. Music News By Barbara Perry We have had a great startup to the Wednesday activities, and all the groups are really fun! Now, we are getting ready to begin our music preparations for Christmas. The youth will be working on a Christmas program on Sunday evenings beginning in October. The adult choir, Sounds of Praise, will also be working on their Christmas cantata starting in October. The Children s Choir and Grace Notes are working on a piece or two for Sunday mornings. We have lots of singing going on so come out on Wednesdays to join us or Sundays for youth! See you there!!

Hurricane Harvey had ripped through southern Texas. It directly affected King George native Rev. Marvin Rose and his family. And this year, the Carolinas have just been hit by Hurricane Florence. With that, tornados have spun through the greater Richmond area. Although one may be prepared for a hurricane, destruction occurs and one never knows how bad it will be. Virginia Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers have their trucks and trailers in the Carolinas already. They have been serving hot meals and providing shower space for those in need. By the time you read this, they will have served tens of thousands of meals to those in need in the Carolinas as well as Richmond. Shiloh supports the Virginia Baptists through money given through the Alma Hunt State Missions Offering. We emphasize this during the month of September; however, you can give at any time. Consider giving to the Disaster Relief fund. Go to for more stories of how Virginia Baptists help. Thank you to all who donated to the Fluvanna Women s Correctional Center. The hygiene items are always needed. The Fredericksburg Area Network Association WMU pooled together and a lot of items were collected! Thank you so much for your generosity! The GALS met in September and Skyped with Amber Vincent, daughter of Dwight and Helen Ruth Lyons. What a joy it was to just chat with her and to hear about her calling to serve the Lord in Turkey. She and her husband, Charles, and their four children will be in Turkey for at least 2 years. We will continue to support the Vincent family in prayer as they serve and share Jesus with those in that country! GALS next meeting will be held Saturday, November 10, at 9:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center. We ll be making our fleece blankets in January, so go ahead and start collecting the fleece now. Our goal is 50 blankets! Rev.
