1 Second Baptist Church, 12 Stillman Road, N. Stonington, CT God s Lighthouse on the Hill Fulfilling the Great Commission in the Community and the World March 2017 Issue #62 Worship with Us Sunday School 9:00 AM Morning Worship 10:00 AM Evening Service 6:00 PM March The month of March brings up a variety of thoughts to me each year. After all the busyness from November through February, I have pretty much forgotten how to be calm and take it easy for awhile. Thanksgiving brings cooking and family plans, baskets to be made for those in need, and church services with testimonies of gratitude for all the Lord has done for us. Followed by December with a variety of things to be done in anticipation of celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior: decorating, shopping, wrapping, visiting, baking, giving all in His name. January follows with new beginnings; this year many of us are dedicating ourselves to reading through the Bible. We usually anticipate snow and all the calamity that goes along with that: no school, slippery roadways, falling down, sledding, skiing, overdoing shoveling and complaining about the cold. February can be more of the same accompanied by colds, flu, viruses and trying to decide whether or not church services should be cancelled. Then comes March. It can have warm sunny days, or it can produce yet more snow storms for us (as you can see, I wasn t sure which church photo to use above). It has no holidays for a day off or for celebration, I never know whether to dress to be warm or overdress and be hot. However I find it is a good month to do some reading. We are not quite ready to do any yard work, so sitting down with a good book fills the bill for me. I suggest you take a look through our Lighthouse Library and enjoy reading while you wait for the rebirth of the earth through green grass and bulbs sprouting up. It is so well organized and there is something for everyone to immerse themselves in to get through to spring. Words are what God chose to share Himself with us. Learn something new through reading a book in March while we wait together for Resurrection Day. Mary Anne Jordan And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2) 1

The message of our Savior through them moves hearts with each presentation. We thank them for their commitment and their teamwork! Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 19:13-14) 13

16 In the Mix Mary Kearsch takes good care of many of us at SBC through her Deaconess ministry. When she isn t busy at the church she can be found bowling along with her husband Ken. She is offering up a tasty cake for us this month. Give it a try! Upstate New York Blueberry Cake 3 cups flour 2 cups sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 4 eggs, separated ½ tsp. salt 2 tsp. vanilla 2/3 cup milk 1 pint blueberries 1 cup butter, creamed Confectioners sugar Cream together the butter and sugar. Add beater egg yolks. Beat until light and fluffy. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add alternately, with milk, to the sugar and egg mixture. Beat 2 minutes. Whip egg whites until stiff and fold in. Pour 2/3 of batter into a greased 8 x 12 x 2-inch pan, sprinkle blueberries over this, then cover with remaining batter. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Sprinkle top with sifted confectioners sugar if desired. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. (John 15:8) 16
17 Children s Page CanStock Photo Purchased What does the Bible say about Doves? 1.) Who sent a dove to see if the water had dried off the earth (Genesis 8:6-8)? 2.) At his baptism, who saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove (Matthew 3:16)? 3.) What did the dove return with the second time it was sent out (Genesis 8:11)? 4.) Why did the psalmist want wings like a dove (Psalm 55:6)? 5.) Whom did Jesus tell to go out as harmless as doves (Matthew 10:5-16)? Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. (2 Corinthians 13:11) 17
