1 August 23, 2015 Blessed Sacrament C a t h o l i c C h u r c h August Dearest Parishioners, This is the final of the mini-season that has focused us on the Mystery of the Eucharist and has journied through the 6th Chapter of the Gospel of Saint John. The Old Testament Scriptures provided for each of these weeks has helped to focus our reflection upon the nature of the truth revealed and how God, in the past, has provided for us with a multitude of feedings as individuals, as communities, and as ministers of the covenant. Joshua (Jos 24:1-2, 15-18) summons all the people and challenges them to accept the fullness of life that comes from the Lord; the people accept this challenge and choose to serve the Lord alone! So too, in the Gospel (John 6:60-69), Jesus challenges the disciples to accept him not only as the Bread of Life but also as the Eternal Word come down from heaven! Sadly, many disciples broke away from Jesus, but those who remained (like Peter) made a deep commitment of faith that would endure throughout their lives and lead them to eternal life. We echo the words of Peter as is found in Psalm 19 and translated in an antiphon by Bernadette Farrell: Your words are Spirit and life, O Lord, richer than gold, stronger than death. Your words are Spirit and Life O lord, life everlasting! Next weekend, August 29 and 30, the Second Collection will be for Ugandan Mission administered by Father Ponce. I thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. Already this year we are sending him home with countless supplies for the infants, medical equipment, and material resources to provide for the next building projects! May the week ahead be filled with countless graces and blessings! The Twenty-First in Ordinary Time 1

Communications Communication Ministry Through newsletters, mailouts, bulletins, and other forms of media, the Communication Ministry at Blessed Sacrament is dedicated to creatively sharing the events and ministries of our church with parishioners and the local community. Do you have experience in journalism, publishing, or graphic design? Consider sharing the gifts you have been given with your parish family. For more information contact Bryan Hayes, bhayes@mybscc.org The Choice What a hard saying! How can we accept it? murmured Jesus disciples. He insisted his word was Spirit and life, yet many could not see their way to follow him. That was their free choice. The great mystery for Christ and his bride, the church, is that we believe in him as he dies to give us real life a share in divine life opened to us in baptism. We are his body: its living parts. Like Peter and the rest, we have no other place to go for eternal life. How do we choose? Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD 2000, OCP. All rights reserved. Clergy Very Rev. Robert Webster Pastor Rev.
