1 The Song of Saint Francis Saint Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church Salter Path, North Carolina November 2016 More from the Camino, Assisi, and Rome It s a Date! 11/2 Art gallery opening 11/8 Prayer Shawl Ministry 11/18 Book Reading 12/3 DOK information brunch 12/4 Annual Parish Meeting 12/7 Art gallery opening 12/10 Cooking for Hope Mission 12/26 Messiah Sing-Along This is Clare's garden. When I was at San Damiano, where she was for 40 years with her sisters, I saw her place at the table in the refectory, the open room where she and the sisters slept on straw mats on the floor, where they worshipped every day in the chapel. It was in this very humble place that the inner story of Clare and Francis was written. But why do all these details matter so much. Why do I want to see it for myself? Because Clare and Francis, through their radical devotion to God, became pure love, and even today it reaches us. What happened here is still happening. It is happening to me. And it matters. 3 Grace Notes by Linda Laughton, Music Director Before I go forward, I need to go back and thank the amazing folk that helped to make October such an outstanding musical month: Thank you to Andrew Scanlon, Organist and Choirmaster of St. Paul's Greenville for joining us for worship on Sunday, October 2, and for bringing many of his choir members for a combined choir of approximately 40. We sang the psalm to an Anglican chant, sang a choral anthem, a motet at communion, and Andrew amazed us on the organ with an energetic toccata for postlude. Korin Gagnon, Beth Parker and Donna Standley for being cheerful greeters and handing out programs to our guests. The men who stayed after service to move the furniture to transform the sanctuary into a stage. Page 3 Finally, thank you to our new friends, pianist Catherine Hamner, and the three tenors Timothy Sparks, George Deaton and Wade Handerson for a stellar show. The Three Triangle Tenors concert on October 16 would not have been possible without Romaine Riddle. She and Dan introduced me to George Deaton and his trio a few years ago, but our concert program was still in its infancy back then and we weren't eqipped to host a ticketed fundraising concert...until now. It was a successful fundraising concert for the church. Thanks to: Romaine and Dan, Sandy Skirving, Linda Keeter, Mary Kurek, Valerie Rohrig, Layne Helwig, and Sharon Watling for their networking, administrative, marketing and technical support. Our satellite ticket sale locations: St. Paul's Beaufort, St. Peter's Swansboro, BluSail Gallery Morehead City, and First Citizen's Bank, Atlantic Beach. Our sponsor/advertisers Charles and Wendy Park of Beaufort Grocery; Chris Grenier, Group Coordinator at Trinity Center; Dr. Christina Saracina at Atlantic Chiropractic and Rehab; Deanna McElmon from Cape Carteret Aquatic and Wellness Center The Gym; and James and Lori Tracy of The Therapy Center of Cedar Point. Thank you to the Manuel Project, Jen and Van Manuel, who sang and played guitar outdoors during the annual lobster fundraising event which was rescheduled to Saturday, October 22 due to Hurricane Matthew. Thank you to Charlie McCurry for joining with me upstairs to provide easy listening guitar and piano for our indoor dining guests. It was fantastic to play with this gifted musician and the 5-hour gig flew by! (Continued on page 4)
4 Page 4 Thank you to the fabulous Mary B. Safrit for an outstanding evening of opera and sacred arias on Sunday, October 30. It is always a pleasure for me to accompany the many fine soloists who are drawn to St. Francis by the Sea. Best wishes to Mary B. as she pursues her professional singing career in New York. Now, on to the next thing: MESSIAH! Monday, December 26, 2016 at 5:00pm The Third Annual Handel's MESSIAH Sing-Along. Sing the choruses you want, sing the entire work if you wish, or simply listen and experience the excitement of this fine, sacred music. Directed by Lewis Moore with David Leahey, organist and a quartet of professional string players, we present the entire oratorio, both sections, including the arias. Registration by December 14 - $ Make checks payable to St. Francis by the Sea with MESSIAH on the memo line, note your vocal part (S,A,T,B) or Spectator and include your phone number and address. Mail to St. Francis by the Sea, 920 Salter Path Road, Salter Path, NC Pre-paid tickets will be held at the door. On December 26, registration at the door is $20. Doors open at 4pm for registration. The sanctuary doors open for seating at 4:45. The music starts at 5:00. Refreshments are served at intermission. Registration does not include vocal scores. Limited vocal scores are available for check-out. We use the Schirmer/T. Noble edition of the Handel's MESSIAH vocal score and encourage singers to bring their own score. 5 Page 5 Reaching out with the Love of Christ to others in need - St. Francis Outreach HURRICANE MATTHEW RELIEF In October, St. Francis partnered with St. Peters, Swansboro to help those in Goldsboro, NC who were impacted by Hurricane Matthew by collecting items for Flood Buckets. Once again, all of you came through in true St. Francis fashion, giving unselfishly and generously from your hearts. The parish hall was overflowing with much needed cleaning supplies, flood buckets, and monetary donations! St. Peters had a very generous collection consisting of baby supplies, over the counter medications and cleaning supplies. Two truckloads of donated items were delivered to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Goldsboro where they were distributed to those in need in the flooded Goldsboro area. In addition, over $700 in donations were collected and sent to St. Andrews where the money will be put to good use by families suffering the impacts of Hurricane Matthew. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED! WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE During the month of November we are collecting gently used hats, coats, jackets and gloves for Hope Mission. With the cooler temperatures rapidly approaching, these items are desperately needed by Hope Mission patrons. There is a bin labeled Hope Mission downstairs at the church in which to place your donated items. Items will be delivered weekly to the Mission. FAMILY PROMISE OF CARTERET COUNTY Family Promise is a nationwide organization with 200 affiliates. It is a coalition of local churches working together to provide shelter, food, and dignity to families with children who have fallen on hard times and find themselves and their children homeless. Carteret County s Family Promise Day Center (on Arendell Street in Morehead City) is where guests can receive assistance looking for jobs, furthering their education, navigating the Department of Housing and Urban Development system, looking for affordable housing, and attending to daily needs such as laundry, taking a shower, cooking a meal, attending parenting and financial skills classes. St. Francis by the Sea continues to help in joining with other churches in Carteret County to support Family Promise by collecting needed items: Breakfast items for guest families. Toiletries, laundry detergent, trash bags, and gently used (or new) pillows, sheets and blankets (twin size only). $20 Wal-Mart gift cards. Or, volunteer to help a host church or at the center by answering phone, or provide transportation to guests as needed. A basket is located on a table in the parish hall where you can place donated items. For additional information, visit: It s not a hand out, it s a hand up Sandy Giacobbi (executive director of Family Promise) (Continued on page 6)
