I thought I knew this, the best home ever. Then while reading and rocking in my cushioned Kennedy rocker a thought occurred that was brand new to me: Are the dolphins that swim gleefully and who sometimes surf down waves, and leap acrobatically out of the water- those beautiful creatures- are they OK? Are they thriving or vanishing? The turtles that several of our Parishioners care for at the aquarium in their volunteer work, are they OK? Or are they vanishing as well? And the pelicans, how they faring? And the tuna? I put the book I was reading down and began reading article after article on my ipad about what is happening to these creatures that I have taken for granted, who swim past St. Francis, who fly on currents above our new roof. Francis and Clare would have considered them to be our brothers and sisters. I have decided that they are right. The next day I went to the aquarium to renew my long-lapsed membership. I talked with Chris about joining me in planning a Lenten study series at St. Francis to help us develop an accurate picture of what is happening here on Bogue Banks to our brothers and sisters who swim in the sea and fly in the air in this very place. We will assemble the best educators to help us know the truth, to open our hearts, to enable us to take better care of our friends the animals, and to communicate with people far and near about the role of the church in ministry to the creation. This is an early announcement of our intention. I hope that it will encourage you to read a book or two, engage in conversations, consider becoming a volunteer yourself, spend time walking the beach and the aquarium. Also, to include in your prayers your hopes and concerns about the creation. Here s one from the Prayer Book Book: Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with all its marvelous order, it s atoms, worlds and galaxies, and the infinite complexity of living creatures: Grant that, as we probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 Page 2 Vestry View From the Junior Guy Just an update on some of the things your Vestry is working on: 1. Getting estimates for repair of the cupola. 2. Changing Church lighting to allow more light at night for safety. Possible changing to LED lighting to save on energy bills. 3. Painting St. Clare Chapel. Can you tape, glue, repair holes or handle a roller? Plus more outside painting. Does anyone have a power washer? 4. Possible painting of Church Office. 5. Continue removal of tree branches from proximity of Church lighting and building. Plus more committees than people to man (Does anyone know anything about audio, communication, social media, youth, paint, etc...?). Please volunteer! Many hands make light work. If you have a talent, interest, specialty or willing heart please contact anyone of our Vestry or Rev Everett Thomas. They will point you in the right direction. George Some Spending Guidance from the Vestry In keeping with our promise to be responsible stewards of your gifts, we would like to share information about the spending process at St. Francis. Our goal is to make clear who can spend or commit church funds. If you were at the annual meeting on January 6, you received a copy of the 2019 budget. It is also available on the password-protected Members page of our website. A parishioner volunteer owns each expense line item on the budget. A list of the budget owners is also on the Members page of the website. If you need the password, please contact the parish office. Budget owners are expected to stay within their budget. If they need to go over budget, they must get vestry approval. This is usually a positive, collaborative process. We do have some latitude to meet extraordinary needs and we all share the goal to see St. Francis succeed in its missions, ministries, and operations. In practical terms, this means only line item owners have authority to spend or commit St. Francis funds, within the scope of their budget. If you would like to purchase something for St. Francis and want to be reimbursed, you first need to get approval from the person whose budget would be charged and provide the approval with your reimbursement request. The vestry and the budget owners thank you for your assistance in making the best use of our gifts.

3 Page 3 St. Francis by the Sea Winter Concert Series The next St. Clare Coffeehouse concert performer will be, Sam Gleaves on Friday, February 15 at 7:00 pm. Rooted in Appalachian sounds, Gleaves songwriting sings of contemporary rural life and social issues. Sam tours extensively in the U.S. and he has performed in Ireland, England, Canada, Japan and Italy. He is truly a multiinstrumentalist, songwriter and Appalachian singer. Our last concert, in conjunction with the Down East Folk Arts Society will be Becky Warren on Friday, March 15th Sweet Beans Coffee and Cafe from Morehead City will be back with coffee and hot chocolate available to concert attendees. Admission to the concerts is free, though we will pass the hat for donations for our performers. Contact Charlie McCurry at if you have any questions. Art Gallery February Our February artist will be painter, Janet Jaworski. She and her husband, David live in Morehead City. Janet says, I take my inspiration from color, light, movement and the abstract within shapes. I will never tire of the amazing beauty around here. My husband and I take what we call meanders, poking down a road, going over another hill and waiting a few more moments for the change in light. The rewards are the works I paint, works that interpret the beauty of color, light and place. Please join us at Janet s Art Opening on Friday, February 1, from 5:30 until 6:30 pm. 4 Page 4 St. Francis by the Sea Outreach HOPE MISSION On Saturday, January 12, St Francis volunteers cooked and served a delicious hot lunch to folks at Hope Mission. They enjoyed Jesse s world famous meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad, rolls and the most delicious desserts! St Francis volunteers also gave away the lovingly homemade & store bought winter warmth items. The folks at Hope Mission excitedly gathered around the space we set up for the hats, gloves, scarves, socks & coats as our volunteers helped them pick out exactly what they needed. The lunch and our winter warmth items were a tremendous hit! SOUPER BOWL OF CARING On Super Bowl Sunday in 1990, a simple prayer inspired a youth group to create a fun, yet meaningful way to fight hunger and reach out to those in need. Using originality and teamwork, the young people invited their friends at twenty-one other churches to join them in collecting donations in soup pots. Souper Bowl of Caring brings people together to help those in need across the country, while transforming the time around the Super Bowl into the nation s largest celebration of giving and serving. Beginning on January 6 and continuing through February 3, St Francis will be collecting non-perishable food items as part of our annual Souper Bowl of Caring food drive to benefit Hope Mission. Please leave your donations on the table in the Parish Hall beginning January 6.

5 Page 5 On Sunday, February 3 we will be serving a variety of delicious, hot soups during coffee hour and are asking for monetary donations to be placed in the soup pot on the food table or in the football helmets that will be passed around. All non-perishable food and money collected go directly to Hope Mission soup kitchen.
