The Song of Saint Francis Saint Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church Salter Path, North Carolina July 2017 It s a Date! 7/14 Familiar Favorites concert & Art Opening 7/27 Heeling Our World Workshop 1-4pm 8/11 String Quartet concert 8/19 Evensong by Schola Cantorum 8/20 Three Triangle Tenors concert 9/24 Lopez Tabor Duo concert 10/14 Lobster Fest 11/03 Laughton-Meadows Concert 12/26 Messiah Sing-Along David, our Sexton, asked one day how I wanted the tables to be set up for the vestry meeting. In a circle, of course I answered. It is hard to arrange a circle using rectangular tables, so we used two circular tables and did the best we could. It was a good arrangement, not great. But there was greatness in the experience. I realized how much being at St. Francis has influenced me. Until coming here nine years ago I had never worshipped in the round. Corporate worship had always been in rows. Now, those rows are barely tolerable. Being here has taught me how important it is to see each other - not just the backs of heads but faces, arms and legs, smiles and tears. Nothing is more important than being a member of the family of God, with brothers and sisters, toddlers and teens, parents and grandparents. Every member of the family is unique, all important, all welcome. When we are lucky enough to have family physically present, we want to see them as fully as possible. You have taught me that a simple arrangement of chairs makes this possible. Circles and Rows of St. Francis helps us do what we are here to do- to see each other, become intensely aware of each other, to see the face of God in the faces around the room. As we do that, we are encouraged to create in the world what we experience at church. We experience light and carry it out into the world. We learn to draw circles everywhere. Edwin Markham wrote a poem about drawing circles in life. It is entitled Outwitted. Here s a part of it: He drew a circle that shut me out - Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win: We drew a circle that took him in! I hope that more and more we will draw circles like that with our lives, including, forgiving, noticing, treasuring, and creating community. Everett+ I often tell visitors when showing them our church that the architecture

2 Communication and Listening by Layne Helwig Communicate: Share or exchange news or ideas Listen: To give one s attention Have you ever given any thought to how well we communicate or how well we listen? They truly go hand in hand. The best orator or writer cannot share their news and/or ideas if no one is willing to give their attention. Do we half listen as we multitask or give that article a breeze through? How much do we miss by not listening? Plenty I would think. An easy example is right here in St Francis. We receive weekly updates from the parish We came together. We prayed. For several months we met with members of the Abigail Chapter from St. Peter's of Swansboro. We discussed and discerned. We received direction from our rector. As we built salads, we built bonds. And then on June 18th, diocesan president Kay Roberts presented the St. Teresa of Calcutta Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King to be instituted and presented its charter to Father Everett. We became the 19th chapter in the diocese of East Carolina. Deacon Carol Eaton, a Daughter, helped officiate as Grace Kemp, Beth Parker, Lisa Park, and Barbara McCreary were installed. These new Daughters were surrounded and supported by numerous Daughters from other nearby chapters. Saint Teresa's daily prayer was read with its evocative first line, "Dear Jesus, help me to spread your fragrance everywhere I go." Each Daughter received her new cross with the following words, "Accept and wear faithfully the cross of the Order, remembering the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, 'Take up your cross and follow me. The recessional hymn for the day was "Lift High the Cross," the official hymn of the Order. The Order of the Daughters of the King was founded on Easter Eve, 1885 by Margaret J. Franklin at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in New York. The Rule of Life of the Order includes the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. To explain, "The Order is a spiritual community in a busy world where women with similar interests can pray, study, share together, affirm ministries and support each other." The Order's Motto is "For His Sake...I am but one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do. What I ought to do, by the grace of God, I will do. Lord, what will you have me do?" administrator. We receive additional s from time to time. We have an excellent website with history, financial reports, newsletters, member s directory and much more. Have you taken the time to read these? How often do you read the entire Song of St Francis? It s good stuff! I have two challenges for you. One is to go into our website and read some of the documentation that St Francis wishes to communicate to you. Don t forget to go click for our members. The password is all lower case sfbts which will get you in. More good stuff! My second challenge is for you to share your news more often and to pay closer attention to others sharing their news. All good stuff! Peace Be With You Daughters of the King Chapter Instituted by Barbara McCreary Our chapter will assist the rector in the area of bereavement. For more information about who we are, please feel free to ask any of us.

Page 3 Grace Notes by Linda Laughton The Three Triangle Tenors in concert at St. Francis by the Sea On Sunday, August 20 th at 5:00pm tenors Timothy Sparks, George Deaton and Wade Henderson, along with pianist Catherine Hamner, return to St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church in Salter Path to perform Summer's Song concert, a mix of songs and arias from sacred to Broadway and beyond. Last fall the tenors thrilled the Salter Path audience with their Autumn Rhapsody concert, and St. Francis by the Sea is delighted to bring this popular Raleigh trio back to the beach. In a set of sacred music, the three tenors will perform Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem along with individual sacred arias by each singer. A Broadway group will include the rollicking Gee, Officer Krupke from West Side Story, and includes wellliked Broadway solos. Catherine Hamner will play the popular Malaguena paired with the three tenors presenting Augustin Lara's Granada describing that beautiful region of Spain. The popular Nella Fantasia based on the theme song from the movie, The Mission, highlights an Italian group of three-tenor arrangements. A reception follows the concert in the art gallery showing the work of award -winning pastel artist Deb Covington of Emerald Isle where all are welcome to meet the performers. Refreshments are served. Concert seating begins at 4:45. Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at the door. Tickets are available at the church office at 920 Salter Path Road in Salter Path, or at First Citizen's Bank in Atlantic Beach. Contact St. Francis by the Sea: (252) ; stfrancisbts@gmail.com; or visit our website at Ticket Sales Begin July 10.

We thank the youth choir of Salisbury Presbyterian, Midlothian, Virginia, director Mark Patterson, for enriching our worship on Sunday morning, June 18, and then for delivering an unforgettable, inspiring concert that evening. A high point of the concert for me was Mark Miller's stunning I believe with the simple lyric: I believe in the sun even when it's not shining; I believe in love even when I don't feel it; I believe in God even when He is silent. The group worked at local missions and sang in Morehead City and Beaufort for two days before returning home. Their concert at St. Francis raised $ to benefit Camp Trinity. A highlight of their visit to the beach was experiencing a labyrinth for the first time. We invited them to join us again next year. The purpose of concerts at St. Francis is to allow everyone to experience the magical acoustic space in our sanctuary and to feel our renowned welcome. Thanks to our good friend, David Leahey, for his fantastic organ concert June 7, and for helping us to achieve our mission. Please mark your calendars for our July 14 concert. Brenda Bruce, pianist, presents songs arranged for solo piano in her Familiar Favorites concert. Brenda says of her program, I think the program has appeal, good for those who say they don't like classical music, tunes people recognize. So the concert has adopted the subtitle: The classical concert for those who say they don't like classical music. Brenda's concert begins at 7pm. The art gallery opens at 5:30 featuring paintings of Mandy Johnson of Morehead City which convey her vision of everyday life in the south. All are welcome! Here is an excerpt from Brenda's biography: Brenda Bruce, well-known North Carolina pianist, brings to life the beauty and mystery of great keyboard literature through her perceptive and inspired 4 performances.. Her infectious enthusiasm invites and compels people of all ages to be deeply engaged as well as entertained. Her performances have taken her throughout the Southeast, New England and Europe. She has performed with the North Carolina Symphony, given numerous recitals at the NCMA (1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2002), and other prestigious venues throughout the State. She holds a Master of Music from New England conservatory in Boston, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Central Methodist College in her home state of Missouri. Her principal teacher New England Conservatory was David Barnett, a student of Alfred Cortot. From this legacy, she developed a strong understanding of the music not only of the French Impressionists but also of Chopin. Her musical "family tree" runs from Chopin through his pupil Descombes to Cortot and thence to David Barnett and to Brenda. We can look upon Chopin as Brenda's "great-great-grandfather." Ms. Bruce has been honored as the recipient of a Raleigh Emerging Artists Grant, and Individual Artist Grant, and the Independent Music teachers Grant from the Music Teachers National Association, the most important national association for music teachers in all areas. She is listed in the North Carolina Touring Artists, Who s Who of American Women and Outstanding Musicians of the 20 th 21 st Centuries. One of her most unusual jobs as a pianist was her twelve-year engagement as pianist for two hours daily in the dining room of SAS Institute in Cary. Here she performed classics, show tunes, nursery rhymes, and popular standards for the clientele. Stay tuned! Linda

Page 5 Reaching out with the Love of Christ to others in need - St. Francis Outreach HEELING OUR WORLD A group of 4-5 ladies met twice in June to sew shoes as part of our involvement with Heeling Our World. Heeling Our World addresses the issue of children in African nations who develop sickness from jiggers which are painful and can lead to death. Our shoes will eventually make their way to children in Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Uganda. Our next workshop will be Thursday, July 27 from 1:00-4:00. Any questions see Denise Throckmorton or Barbara McCreary. Please bring a pair of scissors if you can. All other materials will be provided and no sewing skills are required. Other ways that you can get involved include visiting the web site at artstoendgenocide.org and donating a financial contribution to the church with "Heeling Our World in the memo line. FAMILY PROMISE A huge thank you to Amy & Tanner Hahn, Westbrook Family Dentistry and the fine folks of Pine Knoll Shores for generously donating items and assembling 27 survival bags to be delivered to Family Promise, Morehead City for distribution to those in need. Items that went into the bags include toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, washcloths, snacks, water bottles, and more. When you have no home, no secure place to store your valuables and not much room to carry your stuff, simple things can make a big difference. Suddenly things we take for granted become important! Many times the homeless don t have the capacity or strength to carry a large amount of items. Due to the nature of their lifestyle, the things they do have are often stolen, become wet or are lost. Many items they are in true need of just aren t donated. Thank you, Amy and friends! Your survival bags will be much appreciated! The Family Promise donation basket has been put out again we will be collecting for them. Items needed include toiletries and cleaning supplies, gently used twin sized sheets and blankets. TRINITY CENTER CAMPERS Thank you so much for helping make this year s Trinity Center Campers collection a great success! We collected a multitude of beach towels, flip flops, sunscreen and $265 for these children. With your help, Trinity Center Camp Staff were able to ensure that each child regardless of their financial situation has the optimal camping experience. It is so important that these campers, at least, for that one week, are on equal footing. They have the same food, the same experiences, the same bed time, and the same camp fires. With your help, Trinity Center Staff are able to do just that. So, thank you, thank you, and thank you! 6 Page 6 BUNCO & BEACH TOWEL MINISTRY ECW News On an early June afternoon, 31 ladies met to enjoy a build-a-salad lunch and play Bunco. This gathering was a fund raiser for Deacon Carol Eaton s BEACH TOWEL MINISTRY. We had participants from St Francis, St Peter s by the Sea, Swansboro, and also women who had heard about the event through the grape vine. After a delicious salad lunch and some lovely desserts, there were shouts of BUNCO being shouted accompanied by applause and squeals of delight! It was so nice to get together with women from outside St Francis, make new friends, and talk about partnering on other outreach activities. $580 was raised and given to Carol Eaton for Beach Towel Ministry. Towel Ministry is a youth oriented ministry that specializes in housing repair and refurbishment for the elderly, physically challenged, and economically disadvantaged. Teams of youth and qualified adults spread the Good News of the Gospel by participating in work projects such as building handicap access ramps, painting, roofing, weatherproofing, and other needed housing repairs. Beach Towel Ministry started over 30 years ago in the Diocese of Western NC and brought to the Diocese of East Carolina as Beach Towel Ministry by Fr Bert of St Peter s by the Sea, Swansboro and his wife, our own Carol Eaton as a way for young people to put the Gospel into practical application in hands-on ministry. This summer, from June 24-July 1, at St Peter s by the Sea, Swansboro up of 14 teens, rising 8 th graders through 12 th graders from Swansboro, Camp Lejeune, Cape Carteret, and Emerald Isle) will be working at 3 different sites in the area doing home repairs for 3 families. Next summer Beach Towel Ministry is planning on doing hurricane relief work in Goldsboro, Lumberton, and Kinston.

7 Let there be Light by Barbara McCreary Parishioners Larry Castle, Scott Shelton, George Hirasawa, and Stover Morris performed aerial acrobatics to change light bulbs in our sanctuary. They used ladders and scaffolding to be able to "ascend the heights." This is a task that is completed every three to four years. Thanks to these guys for brightening up our space, both literally and metaphorically.
