SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING Jesus said to his disciples: If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. MT 18: FROM FR JOE Do you know where heaven is? (Patricia) No, I am sorry I do not know where heaven is. We usually think that heaven is in the sky above. A short answer is that heaven is where God is. In the first book of the bible, called the Book of Genesis, we read: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and God's spirit hovered over the water. God said, 'Let there be light', and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3) So God created the heavens, as in the sun, the moon, the stars, outer space, the solar system and galaxies. But these heavens are not the same as the heaven where God is. VOLUNTEERING AT ST JOHN BOSCO Our School values the rich contribution of volunteers in the life and work of our community. A new requirement is to undertake training for responding to child abuse and neglect. Please click on the website. OUR UNIFORM SHOP OPEN TUESDAY MORNINGS am The Catholic Church teaches that life with the Most Holy Trinity, with Mary, the angels and the saints, is called "heaven." Heaven is the ultimate state of happiness (Catholic Catechism no.1024). A little later, the Catechism says that scripture uses images: life, light, peace, wedding feast, wine of the kingdom, the Father's house, the heavenly Jerusalem, paradise: "no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him." (1 Corinthians 2:9). In the Our Father, we pray, Our Father, who art in heaven. So every time we pray the Lord s Prayer, we are reminded that God is in heaven, and heaven is where God is. 3 NEWS FROM AROUND OUR SCHOOL THANK YOU to Rosie and Danielle for their assistance during Jenny s leave. Welcome home Jenny! PLANNING FOR 2015 has already begun. Teachers are designing classes with consideration given to friendships and learning needs. Class groups are a careful professional decision made by teachers with students at the centre. If parents need to be contacted for advice, teachers will make contact. It is important that parents understand the complexities of the placements and show trust in the process and in the decisions made. It is not appropriate for parents to demand placements. However if you have any educational information to add please make contact with your child s teacher. PUPIL FREE DAY THIS TERM: a reminder to parents to plan for the day in Week 8 on Monday 8th September. This is in Show Week and comes from parent suggestions to have a pupil free day around this time. ENROLMENTS 2015 & 2016: we are undertaking final enrolment meetings for If you have any family member, friend or relative interested in our school for next year please make contact with our school enrolment officer for more information. We are also organising 2016 enrolments. Please alert family and friends to our school Office for enrolment information. We have a waiting list at this time in some year levels. STUDENT SICKNESS/ABSENTEES: A reminder to parents to make contact with our school Office if your child will be absent from school. This is part of our shared duty of care. We spend a great deal of time each morning making contact with families about absent students. Please help us by calling our school Office or by leaving a message on the answering service. LOST PROPERTY: We have a number of lost property items in the School Office such as glasses, jewellery, a small purse to name a few and some swimming items. If you are missing any items please call into the Office. SCHOOL PHOTOS: MSP Photographers will be here at St John Bosco School on Tuesday 16 September to take individual, family (siblings) and class photographs. Your child must return his/her envelope (each child must return their own envelope even if you will not be purchasing individual photos) by MONDAY 8 SEPTEMBER to their class teacher. Separate envelopes to order family photographs can be collected from the School Front Office and must be returned by MONDAY 8 SEPTEMBER. We are looking at possibilities for 2015 with the class photos following parent suggestions. Please note that we take those idea seriously and work with the company to look at how to improve and develop better presentations for next year. Mr M DIARY DATE We will be celebrating our 60th Year with a Parish & School Mass on Sunday 21st September 2014 at 10am. Mass will be followed by morning tea/lunch and activities in the school yard. Please return the note that has been sent home with students. We hope all families will make an effort to be involved on this day. 5 SOCCER RESULTS Saturday 30th August Under 7 SJB 1 Portside Yellow 1 We played another one of Portside s teams and again this was an excellent contest. There has been some terrific improvement in the dribbling of our players this season and it showed in this game. With all our players having a go and dribbling more, we surged forward on a number of occasions and got a goal in the first half with a curving free kick. The opposition did sneak one by us in the second half in an exciting game. Great performance everyone. Goal scorer - Kim S. NETBALL RESULTS We had a tough ask this week playing the top team but the girls as usual were amazing. Special mention goes to Stephanie J for finding space and being great in defence. Well done to Abby C on scoring a goal despite only playing one quarter in goals. As a result of your support we are able to buy $ worth of books from the Fair for our Library. Children will be able to enjoy these new books for many years. Students who ordered books, will hopefully receive them within a week. Ljubica and Maryka SJB COMMUNITY CAFE Come and have a cuppa with us straight after Assembly on Tuesday 9th September in the OSHC room (next to the School Hall). 6 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students, Staff and Friends of St John Bosco School, This week some thoughts from a leading academic that reflect on some of the positive we are teaching in our school based on gratitude and respect: Richard Weissbourd, a Harvard psychologist has come up with recommendations about how to raise children to become caring, respectful and responsible adults. Why is this important? Because if we want our children to be moral people, we have to raise them that way. Here are four strategies to raise moral, caring children: 1. Make caring for others a priority Why? Parents tend to prioritize their children s happiness and achievements over their children s concern for others. But children need to learn to balance their needs with the needs of others, whether it s passing the ball to a teammate or deciding to stand up for a friend who is being bullied. How? Children need to hear from parents that caring for others is a top priority. A big part of that is holding children to high ethical expectations, such as honouring their commitments, even if it makes them unhappy. Try this Instead of saying: The most important thing is that you re happy, say The most important thing is that you re kind. Make sure that your older children always address others respectfully, even when they re tired, distracted. Emphasize caring when you interact with other key adults in your children s lives. 2. Provide opportunities for children to practice caring and gratitude Why? Children need to practice caring for others and expressing gratitude for those who care for them. How? Learning to be caring is like learning to play a sport or an instrument. Daily repetition makes caring second nature and develops and hones youth s caregiving capacities. Try this Don t reward your child for every act of helpfulness, such as clearing the dinner table. We should expect our kids to help around the house, with siblings, and with neighbours and only reward uncommon acts of kindness. Talk to your child about caring and uncaring acts they see on television and about acts of justice and injustice they might witness or hear about in the news. Make gratitude a daily ritual expressing thanks for those who contribute to us and others in large and small ways. 3. Expand your child s circle of concern. Why? Almost all children care about a small circle of their families and friends. Our challenge is help our children learn to care about someone outside that circle. How? Children need to learn to zoom in, by listening closely and attending to those in their immediate circle, and to zoom out, by taking in the big picture and considering the many perspectives of the people they interact with daily, including those who are vulnerable. They also need to consider how their decisions, such as quitting a sports team or a band, can ripple out and harm various members of their communities. Especially in our more global world, children need to develop concern for people who live in very different cultures and communities than their own. Try this Make sure your children are friendly and grateful with all the people in their daily lives. Encourage children to care for those who are vulnerable. Give children some simple ideas for stepping into the caring and courage zone, like comforting a classmate who was teased. Use a newspaper or TV story to encourage your child to think about hardships faced by children overseas. 4. Be a strong moral role model and mentor. Why? Children learn ethical values by watching the actions of adults they respect. They also learn values by thinking through ethical dilemmas with adults, e.g. Should I invite a new neighbour to my birthday party when my best friend doesn t like her? How? Being a moral role model and mentor means that we need to practice honesty, fairness, and caring ourselves. But it doesn t mean being perfect all the time. For our children to respect and trust us, we need to acknowledge our mistakes and flaws. We also need to respect children s thinking and listen to their perspectives, demonstrating to them how we want them to engage others. Try this: Model caring for others by doing community service at least once a month or with your child. Give your child an ethical dilemma at dinner or ask your child about dilemmas they ve faced.
