As we read these recollections of two mission trips held this summer, we look forward to next summer, when our parish will sponsor an Appalachian Mission Trip for youth. Planning starts now! Join us! Contact Donna in the parish office: donna@steas.net, Over the summer I participated in a mission trip to Jamaica. The trip is run annually by Sister Susan Kuk and was attended by recent Trinity graduates in two groups. I was a member of the first group, which included two adults and six students. Together we ran a summer camp for five days in Avocat, Jamaica, a small village in the mountains. The second group ran a similar camp in Port Antonio the next week. The camp in Avocat is run at the same school every year. We slept in mosquito tents in one of the classrooms, which had openings in the walls to let in the breeze. We showered in a waterfall down the hill from the school, where we also took the children to swim. The camp ran from 9-3 each day. About seventy children attended, aged Each of us had a group of about ten kids who did activities with us throughout the week. We did crafts and played games, read and did math, and thanks to donations from the parish and parishioners, we were able to take recorders for all of the children and teach them to play. The recorders were such a hit with the kids! They were so excited to have instruments of their own, and (continued)

2 I was hearing some pretty good performances of Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb by the end of the week. We also provided the children with lunch every day. spend a week playing and teaching, but we also brought them food and supplies that they were immensely grateful to have. At first glance, the kids didn't seem to be in need. The school was in better condition than I expected. The children dressed well, and some had backpacks or cell phones. However, throughout the week, we saw how excited they were to have crayons or candy or recorders. They lived in very small houses, and there was little running water, even at the school. They walked up a mountain on a narrow dirt road to go to church. It was a different side of Jamaica from the one tourists see. It made us recognize just how much we have, from air conditioning to clean water to school supplies, that many people don't. On the last day, we sent each child home with a coloring book, notebook, markers and crayons, glue, and other school supplies, as well as T-shirts and other gifts like books and inner tubes. The trip was an incredible experience. My kids and I were unsure of each other on the first day, but by the end of the week I felt close to all of them. Those of us who attended the trip got to Thank you for all of the parish s support in bringing music to these children! I feel so blessed to have been able to make a positive impact on their lives. I have always wanted to participate in a mission trip. This kind of service allows those of us who have a lot to reach out directly to the people who don't. It allows us to express our care for them in person. I felt like I was serving in a real and concrete way by giving these children a special week that they look forward to every year. I was certainly going outside of my comfort zone, but doing so for the good of others is such an incredibly important part of Christian love. Service means so much more when we put aside our own lives in order to be a part of someone else's life for a while. I would recommend this type of service to anyone who wants to improve others' lives by sharing God's love face-to-face. 3 go forth Soon after I departed from StEAS after what was a wonderful summer assignment, my good friend and fellow seminarian Damon Tritle and I joined the LifeTeen youth ministry group from Saint Patrick Parish in Carlisle on a weeklong mission trip to the Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center in Louisa, Kentucky. Louisa and the surrounding region is in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains on the eastern part of the state and roughly an hour from the West Virginia border. The people of Appalachia have a unique heritage and identity, and that is beautiful, but sadly there are many cultural and socio-economic realities which make this region one of the poorest in the country. The group from Saint Patrick s was about 30 strong (chaperones included), and they split into smaller groups of about 6 or 7 and went out to the homes of folks in the area to perform some desperately needed maintenance on the interior and exterior of the houses. My group spent the whole week working at the home of Ron and Sandy. One of the most amazing and memorable things about any mission trip is not so much the work that is done, but rather the relationships built with the residents for whom we work. Throughout the entire week, we would take some time to talk with Ron and Sandy and learn about their lives, they shared with us everything from their daily lives like trips to the grocery store, doctors appointments, or car issues. They also shared some of the deeper, more intimate parts of their lives such as a son who is battling a terrible addiction to heroin and has not had contact with them in over a year. Father Beiting s (deceased August 9, 2012) goal for this mission work was always for the sake of evangelization. You could not find a soul in this area that is not some shade of Christian (by far the Baptists are the most numerous), but the Catholic Church is not very well established there. St. Jude s Parish in Louisa has a grand total of 60 parishioners across two counties! So one of the goals of our mission work is to be the face of the Catholic Church to the people of Appalachia. One thing I kept telling the teens in my group is that we might be the only Catholics they ever come in contact with, and we have something that they lack, so it is on us to share it with them through our love, friendship, and service. I think mission trips are so important because they are a way for us to go out to an unfamiliar place, with only our brothers and sisters and no knowledge of the place and the people to which we are going. Missions are experiences by which we live out an important aspect of our Christian faith. The word mission comes from the Latin word missio which means sending. This is closely related to the Latin word for Mass, which is missa. At the end of every Mass the priest or deacon exhorts us to Go forth. This is our daily charge as Christians: to go forth into the world and spread the Good News. One of the most wonderful ways to fulfill this charge is to go on mission. Seminarian Greg Kramp

Classes for the religious education year begin September COFFEE & DONUTS Our parish offers coffee and donuts for a free-will offering after the 9 am Mass during the CCD year, and it s a great refueling stop for families and friends! Can you volunteer some time to help? We know it s very difficult for young families, in particular, to make long-term volunteer commitments you already have very full schedules. So this year, we re trying à la carte volunteering for Coffee & Donuts. Here s how it will work: A LA CARTE VOLUNTEERING Go to Sign up for ONE thing on ONE day: Pick up donuts & drop off at church Pick up juice & drop off at church Make coffee and have everything ready by 9:50 am Staff the Coffee & Donuts hour Clean up afterwards We ll try this on a month-by-month basis and see how it goes. If the interest isn t there, we ll just cancel on the weeks when there isn t enough manpower. We understand that family life has changed, and we re hoping that trying some different volunteering models will provide opportunities for you to serve the parish in ways that work for you! FTY HOURS EUCHARISTIC DEVOTIONS NEXT WEEKEND Reverend John Kuchinski, Parochial Vicar at Saint Francis Xavier Parish in Gettysburg and Catholic Campus Minister at Gettysburg College, will be the homilist for our annual Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotions, which begin Sunday, September 9, at the 11 am Mass. Father Kuchinski spent four years at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, and four years in graduate theological studies in Rome. In his spare time, he is currently completing the STL degree in moral theology at The Catholic University of America. A graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Gainer in This year, in consideration of current events, a special emphasis of our Eucharistic Devotions will be prayers for the healing of the Church, reparation for the sins of Church leadership, and intercession for survivors of childhood sexual abuse. NFL FOOTBALL SWEEPSTAKE TICKETS The Knights of Columbus are selling NFL sweepstakes tickets next weekend in Menniti Hall and in the narthex at Connections Corner. Tickets cover games for the last 10 weeks of the NFL season. Overall prizes of $25,000 will be distributed over the period, with $2,500 in prizes for 25 lucky winners each week!
