I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them. Today we celebrate the mission of God s saving plan being passed from John to Jesus, through whom it will reach across the continents to every corner of the Earth. Just as the Olympic torch is passed on from runner to runner as it is carried across continents to the site of the games, through our baptism each of us are the runners, the torchbearers of God s saving plan today. The baptism of Jesus marks the beginning of Jesus public ministry. Everything he will say and do after being baptized will fulfill God s desire for human salvation. In baptism we are called to enter into a new relationship a mission with a mission with God and with one another as the community of God s beloved people. Our own public ministry on behalf of the human needs of those around us carries on the mission of God s saving plan and our relationship with God deepens. In this time and place, and across the continents, we are the torchbearers with Christ of God s desire for human salvation. Here we confess our belief in the dignity of all human persons and justice for all. Here we strive with all our energy of body and soul for right relationships, we discover our gifts and we place them at the service of the human need for community. All this is the burning desire of God lit within us at the moment of our baptism. The torch of the light of Christ that has been passed on to us. THE HUMAN NEEDS of our community are clearly evident as is the mission mandate of Christ to use the gifts entrusted to us for the good of all. I encourage you to take some time to read and think about the summary of Before the challenge of carrying out faithfully and generously the mission of Christ, we are all deeply conscious that the mission is His. Of ourselves, we will accomplish nothing. With Christ we can do all that God the Father asks of us. especially when it is difficult for us. Pastoral Letter on the Reorganization of the Northeast Deanery census data on our parish that you will find in today s bulletin. Usually we think that a parish exists to serve the spiritual and social needs of Catholics. While this is true, a Catholic parish actually exists to serve the needs of every person who lives within the parish boundaries. The Church has always taught maybe not so well communicated that every person living within our boundaries is a parish member and some are registered members. As a mission parish we need to be aware of and responsive to the predominately Non-Catholic population that lives within our parish boundaries. As a parish with a mission we need to be deliberate about finding ways to remain a viable organization in our community even though our human and financial resources are declining. Our Parish Pastoral Council is now developing the strategy for ensuring a Catholic presence in this community for years to come. We will accomplish this by making parish membership, stewardship of our resources, and outreach to the community through partnership with others our priorities. In these ways, here and now, God s desire for salvation will be achieved.

And he was buried and rose again; it is certain because it is impossible.

6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Through the centuries, artists and craftspeople have depicted Jesus baptism in the Jordan River by John. At first in mosaics and frescoes, and later in tapestries, stained glass, and paintings, the scene is familiar. Jesus is standing waist high in flowing water. Above him, standing on dry land, John the Baptist pours water over Jesus. The first artists to depict this were sketching from memory. This is exactly how most people were baptized in the early days: as adults, standing or kneeling in the water, with water poured over their heads. This method of baptizing, called immersion, is the favored way today. An adult enters a font, or an infant is lowered a bit into the water supported by a parent s hand, and water is poured or splashed over them. The treasures of baptistry art attest that submersion, or plunging beneath the water s surface, is not really in our tradition, and that infusion, the mere pouring of a few drops of water, yields too narrow an understanding of what it means to be plunged into Christ s life. Jesus Christ has gone before us into the water, and waits for us there with abundant gifts. No wonder the tradition calls for abundant symbols! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 8 Holy Name of Jesus Parish December 2013 Demographic Scan of the Community We Are Called to Serve A Mission Parish With A Mission Last year we established a new Parish Pastoral Council with the primary purposes of strengthening our Catholic presence in Northeast St. Louis County as a sign of saving unity, keeping our parish vibrant, and promoting human development as a fundamental work of evangelization. In September the Council began working to identify three pastoral priorities that our parish ministries, organizations, and activities will focus on for the next 2-3 years. The Council s discussion of priorities is using the results of our 2008 Vision Day and various assessments of our vitality made by parish leaders over the past 8 years. Several meetings have also engaged the leaders of parish organizations in discussions of their plans and needs for the future. In addition, since every parish is called and established to serve the community where it is located, the Council has reviewed a great deal of information from the 2010 U.S. Census. For the benefit of our registered parishioners, Council members Mark Tranel and Christine Kulla-Branz have made a summary of census data about our parish. All are encouraged to read and prayerfully reflect on this information. The human needs of our community are clearly evident as is the mission mandate of Christ to use the gifts entrusted to us for the good of all. Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church serves an approximately 18-square mile area in Northeast St. Louis County. There are 69,214 people living in 26,229 households in that area of which 85.7 percent are African American and 14.1 percent are white. Children are present in 39 percent of the households. The majority of children (51.7%) live in a household headed by a single female parent; one-fifth (22%) percent of children live in a home with married-couple parents; and 11.8 percent live in the care of their grandparents. At 29 percent of all households, a person living alone is another significant type of household in the Holy Name of Jesus service area. With a median income of $34,000, households in the Holy Name of Jesus service area have incomes considerably below the St. Louis County median income of $59,000. While the unemployment rate is high at 17 percent, most households (77%) are working households. Only 5 percent of households receive cash public assistance; 27 percent receive food stamps. The poverty rate in the area is very high at 23 percent. Poverty is even higher among households with children. Approximately 35 percent of children live in poverty although the parents of 80 percent of children are working including parents with very young children (under age 6). With approximately 5,000 children under age 6 in the area and less than one-quarter of them (23%) in preschool, there is a significant need for quality, affordable early child care. There are a significant number of new residents in the Holy Name of Jesus service area with about 40 percent of households having moved in since 2005 and 58 percent moved in since Homeownership in the area is low with 38 percent of households renting. The cost of housing is a source of significant financial stress on many renters with 65 percent paying more than 30 percent of their income for rent and utilities. A good many of the working residents of the area have to travel outside the area for their jobs. There are only 13,884 jobs in the area for the 27,374 who work and many of the jobs in the area do not match the skills of area residents. Lord, grant that all the faithful of the Church looking into the signs of the times by the light of faith may constantly devote themselves to the service of the Gospel. Keep us attentive to the needs of all that, sharing their grief and pain, their joy and hope, we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation and go forward with them along the way of your Kingdom. Eucharistic Prayer Jesus, The Way to the Father Based on the 1965 Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, 2nd Vatican Council In every time and in every place, the Church faces the challenge of how to carry out her mission, the mission of Christ, as effectively as possible. We must constantly examine our conscience with regard to our stewardship of God s gifts. Before the challenge of carrying out faithfully and generously the mission of Christ, we are all deeply conscious that the mission is His. Of ourselves, we will accomplish nothing. With Christ we can do all that God the Father asks of us. especially when it is difficult for us. Pastoral Letter on the Reorganization of the Northeast Deanery Paragraphs 51,54 February 2005
