I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its community, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. At the time of death Christians consciously connect the end of life with the beginning of life. We remember that giving our lives completely back to God in the act of dying is really how we have been trying to live since the day of our baptism. For an individual and for the community the ritual of baptism reminds us that we are being immersed that day and for a lifetime into the mystery of Jesus passion, death, and resurrection. Jesus death was not an accident. It was on purpose, an intentional act of unselfish love. Hopefully (in light of today s Gospel) by the time of our death we have often experienced the joy of dying to ourselves. And, have been convinced that this is how a person or community really comes to life. This is the hope of the resurrection. This is what it means to be righteous. This is how we will know that we have an honorable place at the Table of the Lord. On Saturday at Mass our community remembered and celebrated the life of Dennis Kappauff, the music director for The Christones. For over seven years they have served as the choir for our parish community s Mass on Saturday evening. Beginning in 1966 at St. Martin de Porres Parish they have served as music ministers in a number of different parishes, a.m.d.g. ad majorem Dei gloriam [ for the greater glory of God ] inque hominum salutem [ and the salvation of man ] and over time have given 50 to 60 different people an opportunity to use their gifts and talents in music to serve the Church. Dennis loved music more than life itself. He understood that music was the Word of God a sacrament which revealed God in our time and place. His gift and passion for music was truly a fulfillment of the expression for the greater glory of God and the salvation of man. The monogram above has been used often in Christianity. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote it at the top of each of his compositions. This monogram is a way of remembering that our gifts and talents come from God. It s also a way of confessing our faith that each of us in unique ways can and should reveal something of the goodness of God. When we intend to do this sometimes at great cost to ourselves we always bring about the healing and wholeness of others (the salvation of humanity). When we are good at doing this we have learned the virtue of humility and know the meaning of being baptized in the hope of the Resurrection. We will also have found our place of honor at the Table. Other News & Short Notices EVANGELIZATION TEAMS are now forming in our parish. The primary focus of these teams will be hospitality making an intentional effort to greet and spend time with strangers visiting or being served by our parish. Six parish members have already volunteered. If you re interested in knowing more about this or want to volunteer, simply fill out and return the card in your pew. Watch for more information on this in next week s bulletin. PLEASE MAKE SURE TODAY that you ve invited your family and friends to come and join you at our Fall Festival & Homecoming on Saturday, September 28th. This week call and remind them to have it on their calendar. Also, start letting your neighbors know.

7 Remember to Laugh Stress can affect us in many different ways. Some common responses can be: aches and pains, decreased energy level and sleep, or feelings and emotions. When stress does cause us to respond in one of these manners, what behaviors do you or have you adopted. Eat to calm down Speak and eat very fast Drink alcohol or smoke to calm down Rush around but do not get much accomplished Work too much Delay doing things that need to be done Sleep too little, too much or both Slow down Try to do too many things at once Engaging in even one of these behaviors may mean that you are not dealing with stress as well as you could. Healthy habits can protect you from the harmful effects of stress. Here are 10 positive healthy habits you may want to develop. 1. Talk with family and friends 2. Engage in daily physical activity 3. Accept the things you cannot change 4. Remember to laugh 5. Give up the bad habits 6. Slow down 7. Get enough sleep 8. Get organized 9. Practice giving back 10.Try not to worry Empower yourself by taking actions to control your stress level. Set goals that are reasonable to achieve. Say to yourself, I will use these 4 ways to deal with stress: positive self talk, emergency stress stoppers, finding pleasure and daily relaxation. Stress is unhealthy, find a way! 10 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means high place, yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or I will go to the altar of God, followed by the altar servers response, The God who gives joy to my youth. Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink. Tuesday, August 20th was our first day of school. We have 222 students in Pre School through 8 th grade-we feel truly blessed! On Thursday, August 15 th, the parents attended Back To School Night. Sister Mary welcomed everyone and Mrs. Dafflitto, our CRE, opened the evening with prayer. Sister Mary then spoke about some of the changes being made to our emergency management plan. The teachers met with the parents to share their curriculum and other pertinent information about their classrooms. Parents had the opportunity to meet our new Seventh Grade teacher, Jane Zappia. Our first day went very smoothly. All the students looked smart in their uniforms and found their way to their classrooms. Lots of parents were also on hand to see their children to their classrooms. The first day was dedicated to running through their schedules with 30 minute classes. Wednesday was the first full day of school and everyone was happy to begin settling into a routine. We have 42 new students and 35 new famiiles. All enjoyed their first day of school at CLN. Our theme for the year is We Can Make A Difference We introduced the theme at a prayer service in the cafeteria on the first day of school. One of the ways we will live out our theme this year will be writing in our prayer journals each day, one thing we did to make a difference in a person s life the day before or one way someone made a difference in our lives. We want to thank each of you for partnering with us to provide a Catholic education for our children. We still have Catholic children from both our parishes that we are educating in the Catholic faith and each year we have several of our non-catholic students who are baptized and join our church. You make that possible. We couldn t do it without you! If you would be interested in receiving our weekly CLN newsletter, please send your address to sr_mary@charter.net and we will add you to our group.
