COMING EVENTS OF NOTE Athletic Association Golf Tournament Saturday, September 19th, 2015 Benefiting Christ Light of the Nations Athletic Assn Holy Name of Jesus Parish Homecoming Saturday, September 26th Parish Women s Retreats Monday-Thursday, October 19th-22nd Monday-Thursday, November 16th-19th (White House Retreat Center, South St. Louis County) Celebrating the Vitality of Our Community and Our Church Community Calls for Commitment THE BELLEFONTAINE NEIGHBORS COMMUNITY of our parish suffered a great loss this past week with the death of Sergeant Peggy Vassallo. For almost 15 years Peggy served with the department as Community Relations Officer and oversaw the Neighborhood Watch Program. She was also a DARE Officer in several of our schools. Peggy had a special involvement with youth in our community, serving as a coach with the Matthews-Dickey Boys and Girls Club. This summer she also launched the first ever Bellefontaine Youth Skills and Sports Camp. Peggy s sister noted that she would do all she could to help people, and often worked to find ways to connect residents with needed resources for housing or utilities. Mayor Bob Doerr commented that she lived to help others, referring to her work in the community as a ministry. Please keep Peggy and her family in your prayers. Pray too for the police officers and city officials of Bellefontaine Neighbors who are also suffering a great loss. Pray that the residents and public officials of this community can find ways and the will to incorporate her spirit and her values into the way we live each day. We Are Alive! In Christ Annual Parish Homecoming We are now in the final weeks of preparing for our 10th Annual Parish Homecoming on Saturday, September 26th, 1:00pm-10:00pm. Now s the time to invite your family, friends, and neighbors to come with you to enjoy all or some part of the day s activities. Getting together is an important reason for our homecoming! It s also an important step toward reaching our $30,000 fundraising goal by June 30th of next year. Parish members of all ages are encouraged to lend a helping hand. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parish members and a very good way for others to get to know you. Check the bulletin for ways to help out, or call the Parish Office and leave your name and number. FATHER BERNARD OLSZEWSKI will speak next weekend at all the Masses on behalf of Cross Catholic Outreach. CCO was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Cross Catholic Outreach is an official Catholic ministry founded to help the poor throughout the world. They serve struggling families by providing food medicines and other life-saving resources through a network of Catholic partners already in place overseas. Utilizing Catholic ministries to distribute aid empowers local leaders, strengthening the Catholic community s ability to share the Gospel with those who need it most. It is a cost-effective approach to distribution that insures more of our contributions reach the poor. Father Bernard entered the Conventual Franciscan Friars and was ordained in July He then joined the Diocese of St. George s in Grenada in the Caribbean in He has taught philosophy and religious studies. He has also served as a Director of Campus Ministry, as a board member for various non-profit organizations, and on the marriage tribunal of the Buffalo Diocese. Please warmly welcome Father Bernard to our parish next weekend while I am on vacation. I will be traveling with Father Carl Scheble former pastor of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Parish on a long-planned trip to Alaska. We both want to see it before it melts too much more! We return to St. Louis on September 11th.

4 NAPPING:GOOD OR BAD? When you re not getting a good night s sleep, taking a nap during day seems like a good way to catch up. Sometimes a nap can be just the refresher you need. But napping may also interfere with your night time sleep, which in turn can make you want to nap even more the next day, creating a downward spiral of poor sleep. In general, naps that last longer than 30 or 40 minutes or occur late in the day can disrupt your nighttime sleep. If you re going to nap, do it in a quiet, cool, dark place with distractions so that you can actually sleep rather than toss and turn. To get the most out of a nap, keep it close to 30 minutes. The longer you nap, the more likely you are to feel groggy afterward. The best time for a nap is typically after lunchtime or in the early afternoon, which is when most people tend to feel sleepiest. Take your usual bedtime into account, as well. Naps should generally occur at least 4-5 hours before your bedtime. Short naps taken during this time are less likely to interfere with nighttime sleep. Most of all, it is so important that we all get our necessary rest. The best way to know that is to listen to your body and keep in touch with your energy level. Have a happy week.
