Their stories consistently reveal the importance of having faith, working hard, and doing the best they can. After that God does the rest! This week we begin a new fiscal year and I d like to share with you some of the challenges we face. But first read about our mission in the box at the right and why stewardship is such an important priority for us. I have accepted the recommendation of our Finance Committee and Pastoral Council to strive to cover 70% of our parish expenses from our ordinary parish revenues. To make this goal we will attempt to increase our Sunday collection by $20,000 over this year and to raise $30,000 by means of parish fundraising activity. However, to reach this 70% goal we will still need $42,130 in additional revenue or to reduce expenses by $60,167 or some combination of more income and fewer expenses. As challenging as this may seem over the past two years we have been making some good fiscal progress: In fiscal year we reduced expenses by 13.2% ($122,843) and the previous year by 9.3% ($95,049). In addition, we have somewhat sustained Sunday offerings, declining by 2% ($8,003) in , by 6.5% ($25,969) in , but by only 0.7% ($2,538) in And finally, we are using less of our savings for parish operations, though the total amounts remain significant. We began this fiscal year (July 1st, 2014) with $2,573,526 in our savings account. By sustaining our Sunday collections and reducing expenses in FY14 we only used $194,782 (7.0%) of savings while in FY13 $403,932 (12.7%), and in FY12 we needed $866,510 (21.5%) for parish operations. In FY16, if we reach our 70% goal, funding our entire budget for parish operations will require withdrawing $235,250 from our parish savings. a mission with a mission As a mission parish our awareness of and responsiveness to the needs of the predominately Non-Catholic population living within our parish boundaries is fundamentally a work of evangelization. As a parish with a mission we need to be deliberate about finding ways to remain a vital and stable organization in our community even though our human and financial resources are declining. Therefore, to fulfill our mission Stewardship has been one of our three parish priorities for the past two years an especially important priority for these reasons: We need to reduce the rate at which we are using our savings for the operation of our parish. Therefore, we will continue our efforts to increase parish income and reduce parish expenses by working to stabilize and increase Sunday offerings as well as generate revenue by leasing space to organizations that can help us with our mission in North County. We need to demonstrate for potential investors our ability and willingness to work toward a balanced parish budget. If we are responsible in managing our funds, it is much more likely that we will receive grants in support of our parish and the interest of other organizations who want to locate here in support of our mission.

4 SWIMMING POOL SAFETY The swimming pools are open. They are a great way to cool off with the rising temperatures. Before you jump in the water to cool off and relax, remember, pools can be a source of enjoyment, yet they can also make you sick. Here are a few important reminders to keep you safe and healthy: God to a pool that is well-maintained, and really clean. Don t swim if you have diarrhea. Avoid getting pool water in your mouth. Don t drink or swallow it. Take a shower before and after swimming. It is important to shower before in order to get germs off before jumping in the pool. Wash your hands, especially after using the bathroom. If it looks and smells clean, chances are the pool is safe to go in. It should be clear and you should be able to see the bottom. The main drain should be a contrasting color. If you can t see the difference in color on the bottom of the pool, then you definitely shouldn t swim in it. HAVE FUN AND STAY HEALTHY: S. 5 FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST Mark s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or ministry. As with many of Mark s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus twofold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus return to his native place, and further points out that he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the least. In the day of the Gospel s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he? Can he? Does he? Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence? The Annual Outdoor Novena to Our Lady of Mt. 7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the sixteenth century, the Council of Trent, which was otherwise devoted to liturgical uniformity, was very tolerant of ageold marriage customs. The Council singled out praiseworthy customs and hoped they would be retained. The Second Vatican Council likewise asked for a careful evaluation of customs, admitting that not everything about wedding practice is praiseworthy. In our revised liturgy, all of the prayers consistently stress the equality of the partners. Some familiar customs do not match this insight. Often, the groom remains hidden in a sacristy while the bride, accompanied only by her father, enters with her attendants. This is hardly equality, especially if it appears that her father is giving her away to her husband. This is a familiar enough scene, but increasingly couples are called to a different practice. Symbols and signs carry and communicate meaning. The challenge for couples today is to match the meaning to the symbol, and for the couple to be authentic in all they do and say on the day of their wedding. Having bride and groom both take part fully and equally in the entrance procession is exactly the kind of praiseworthy practice we ve been looking for! West County Divorced and Widowed Catholics is an organization for those who find themselves single again after losing a spouse through death or divorce. Our aim is to assist our members in finding friendship and support, through information and social activities. We meet monthly on the second Tuesday at Incarnate Word Church at 7pm. For information call Theresa Jordan at MASS FOR HEALING will be celebrated at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta at the corner of Chambers Rd and N Elizabeth Ave on Wednesday, July 29th at 7p.m. During the celebration, Fr. Rosy and a number of other prayer stations will be available to pray over anyone seeking healing. While on earth, Jesus taught, healed and delivered; Jesus commissioned all the baptized to do the same. The practice of laying on of hands has been used throughout the history of the church. Please come with your needs, to pray for someone else, or as intercessor for those who are being prayed over. Handicapped accessible. Please call Ralph ossmeyer at for more information.
