3 Waiting vs. Traveling E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org When I m at the supermarket, I look for the shortest line at the checkout counters. If there is a self-serve checkout, I often use that. I ve got things to do and places to go and I really don t want to spend my life online waiting. Celebrating Kathy Around the year 1993 Kathy Belmonte began sharing her time and faith by teaching in our religious education program. And for the past 17 years hundreds -- maybe even thousands-- of children participated in the part of the program where Kathy was coordinator of the levels between the first communion and confirmation. Kathy is now retiring from this position, though she ll continue as a volunteer catechist. We re in the process of interviewing candidates for the coordinator position for next year. All are invited to celebrate Kathy at next Sunday s 9am Family Mass, followed by a reception in the Parish Center. Be sure to reach out to families whose children are now grown to invite them to our celebration of this faithful and loving woman. How different the checkout line is from the communion line! As we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ today, it might be good to reflect on what makes the communion line a traveling procession that unifies, rather than a waiting line. To that end, I m going to share some quotes from the United States Bishop s website where they teach about the communion procession: The Church understands the Communion Procession, in fact every procession in liturgy, as a sign of the pilgrim Church, the body of those who believe in Christ, on their way to the Heavenly Jerusalem...When we move in procession, particularly the procession to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Communion, we are a sign, a symbol of that pilgrim Church on the way. Each time we move forward together to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord, we join the countless ranks of all the baptized who have gone before us, our loved ones, the canonized and uncanonized saints down through the ages, who at their time in history formed a part of this mighty stream of believers. It may be difficult for some of us to embrace the emphasis on Mass as the action of a community rather than an individual act of my own faith and piety, but it is important that we make every effort to do so. Christ himself at the Last Supper pleaded with his Father: "Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are... as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us..." (John 17:11, 21). Baptism has joined us to Christ and to one another as the vine and its branches. The life of Christ, the Holy Spirit, animates each of us individually, and all of us corporately and guides us together in our efforts to become one in Christ. Finally, the fact that the Communion Procession is a profoundly religious action tells us something about the way in which we should participate in this procession. We are the Body of Christ, moving forward to receive the Christ who makes us one with himself and with one another. Our procession should move with dignity; our bearing should be that of those who know they have been redeemed by Christ and are coming to receive their God! 3

CDCLI is recognized by NeighborWorks America as an exemplary organization. Words of MERCY from Pope Francis:...Patience...Other people have a right to live in this world... Over the course of the next year we will feature some thoughts from one of Pope Francis talks, homilies or writings. We invite you to think, talk and pray about what it might be saying to you and to our parish about our MISSION as followers of Jesus Christ as we seek with faith, hope and love to bring the Gospel to the Levittown community and beyond. Patience takes root when I recognize that other people also have a right to live in this world, just as they are. It does not matter if they hold me back,...unsettle my plans, or annoy me by the way they act or think, or if they are not everything I want them to be. Love always has an aspect of deep compassion that leads to accepting the other person as part of this world, even when he or she acts differently than I would like. From Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation The Joy of Love, March 19, 2016 Who annoys you by the way they act and think? Do you believe they have a RIGHT to think differently? How can you be more patient and loving with that person? 6

9 Catholics for Freedom of Religion - CFFR Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 Memorial Day: A Catholic Understanding of the Nature and Call of Freedom: Why are human beings willing to fight and die for freedom? As Americans, this Memorial Day we remember those who died in service of our country. But as Catholic Americans, we reflect on the meaning of true freedom - a freedom we as Catholics are called to live to the fullest. In The Gospel of Life, Pope John Paul II shows us that when freedom is no longer based on objective truth, it destroys itself. When a person declares himself totally self-governing, autonomous, deciding his own truth, as in a secular state, then people will eventually reject each other, as each person seeks to have his own interests prevail. Such a society does not become more free; it becomes less free as vice, corruption, brutality and oppression inevitably increase. One reason we human beings are willing to fight and die for freedom is because the need for freedom is imprinted into our very nature. By virtue of our ability to reason and our free will, we are impelled to seek truth, especially religious truth. Our creator instilled this drive in us so that we would seek Him, for He is truth. Having found truth, we must live it and to do this we must be free from coercion. Therefore, if attacked, human beings will rightly and necessarily die for true freedom. This Memorial Day, Catholics rightly honor our fallen brothers and sisters, and remember our Church, who has defended the dignity and freedom of the human person for 2,000 years. (catholic.org/news; Michael Terheyden) "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." When we make God our King and advance his Kingdom in our nation, we serve both our Lord and our country. 10 Liturgy Corner SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHIRST (Corpus Christi) May 29, 2016 T his Eucharistic day, observed with such solemnity throughout the world, began in a quiet Belgian convent in the thirteenth century, with the vision of a holy nun, St. Juliana. In her vision, she saw the moon, full and bright. It was glorious, except that one part of its disk was in shadow. The meaning of the vision was then revealed to her: the moon represented the liturgical year; the shadow, a missing feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. Juliana spoke to her confessor about what she had seen. Amazingly, within thirty-five years, Pope Urban IV had established the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ in the Church s universal calendar. Hundreds of years later, in 1849, Pope Pius IX added the Feast of the Precious Blood celebrated on July 1. Following the Second Vatican Council, the two liturgies became one solemnity in honor of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Of course, we already had a day honoring the Eucharist: the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, which even includes a procession with the Blessed Sacrament. But the purpose and the mood of the two processions are strikingly different. On Holy Thursday, we walk with Jesus to the Mount of Olives, to keep watch with him on the night of his betrayal. The sacrament is carried in the ciborium, covered with the humeral veil: and Christ s glory, too, is veiled as he undergoes his Passion. On Corpus Christi, we walk in the afterglow of Easter Time, in company with the Risen Lord. This time, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in a monstrance: the Lord s glory is not hidden, but visible to all. First Reading: The priest-king Melchizedek of Salem who blesses Abram and God Most High for Abram s victory over his foes is a mysterious person who appears once and is not heard of again in the Abraham narrative. Salem means peace, and is understood to refer to Jerusalem, the city of Peace that David made the spiritual and political capital of Israel. In bringing out bread and wine for the offering, Melchizedek prefigures Christ s offering of himself in the symbol of bread and wine. Today s feast celebrates that sacrificial gift which Christ left us, and recalls its pre-figurement in the offering of the priest-king of Salem, Melchizedek. Responsorial Psalm 110: This enthronement psalm celebrated the coronation of the new king, filling the people with new hope in one who would be just and rule the way God desired and wished. Second Reading: Paul briefly narrates the earliest account of the institution of the Eucharist. Paul states that though not personally present, he received his as a tradition handed on to him, that Christ left us a memorial of his total self-giving sacrifice for us all in the bread and wine, symbolic of his Body and Blood. To do this in memory of Jesus means that disciples are to model Jesus in offering their lives in self-giving sacrifice on behalf of others. Whenever we celebrate Eucharist and give of ourselves for others, we proclaim Christ s life-giving Death until he comes again. Gospel: The multiplication of the loaves and fishes appears in all four Gospel accounts, testifying to its importance for Jesus followers. It became the clearest story associated with Eucharist celebration and the corresponding demands that celebrating Eucharist places on all disciples. Jesus invites us as he did his disciples not to dismiss others in need but to feed and care for others, no matter how challenging. In so doing, we are to bring what we have to the Lord, ask for God s blessing and proceed to take care of all in need. Jesus assures us that not only will there be enough to go around, but we will have plenty left over. Eucharistic people model Jesus in giving of themselves for others, so that all may live. Today s feast is both a celebration and challenge. 10
11 Liturgy Corner Tuesday, May 31. Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. When the angel brought Mary the amazing message that she would be the mother of God s Son, he also brought her some family news; her elderly cousin, Elizabeth, was going to have a baby as well. Immediately, Mary set out to visit her cousin and help her at what must have been a challenging time. When Mary arrived, something amazing happened: the child in Elizabeth s womb leapt up in recognition, and Elizabeth too was filled with the Holy Spirit and realized that Mary was carrying God s Son. Even before his birth, John the Baptist was pointing the way to Christ. The month of June is dedicated to The Sacred Heart of Jesus.
