3 Mistrusting Carpenters E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Sommertime The summer is upon us and I m looking forward to getting out into the community for home visits in the weeks ahead. See page 12 of the bulletin for a schedule of when I m available for Sommer in the Summer and how to sign up. Also on that page is the schedule for our Teen Fixup Club where I invite teens to volunteer their time during the summer to help with various fix-up projects around the parish. We had a great start with dozens of volunteers as we begin to renovate the school cafeteria so it will be a comfortable and inviting space for Religious Education in the fall. Happy Birthday America! Despite our imperfections as a nation, the democratic experiment stands as a beacon of light for so many oppressed people in the world. But we still need to pray for more wisdom. God bless America. Where did this man get all this? So asked Jesus neighbors in Nazareth in today s Gospel (Mark 6:1-6). Is he not the carpenter? Because of the neighbors distrust, he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. I don t blame the people of Nazareth. What if your favorite carpenter or plumber or lawn care specialist appeared at St. Bernard s next Sunday morning instead of the priests and started to celebrate Mass? Would YOU think that you ought to put faith in him or her? I m guessing not. So I understand that the people who grew up with Jesus and spent a few decades seeing him build things might be skeptical of him as a rabbi. And as the Messiah? The Savior of the World? Well that would be stretching faith completely. I also feel for Jesus. There are his friends from the neighborhood; there are his mother s friends; there are his cousins and other relations. He must have felt so happy now that he was successful in bringing the Kingdom of his Father to others. And then he goes home to show them what he has discovered and he wants to share the good news with them too. And all of these people who he knows, loves, and respects, all of the friends he played kickball with in the dusty streets of Nazareth, all of the elders who guided him through the years now ridicule him and can't see him for who he is. They mistrust the carpenter because all they see is a carpenter. They cannot see the Son of God. What is the lesson for us? In baptism, we become God s adopted children. Therefore right now we are surrounded by the sons and daughters of God. Can we see them for who they are? Or does some other aspect of their history with us blind us to the reality that we are working next to, eating next to, praying next to, playing next to a fellow child of God? This week, let s take some time to pray for the people in our lives and to consider who they really are and attempt to see beyond our limited vision of them. Just like the people of Nazareth, we ll be in for some wondrous surprises. 3

7 5 Misconceptions about Pope Francis Encyclical Letter By Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate Pope Francis recently issues his long-awaited Encyclical Letter entitled Laudato Si, after the first 2 words of the letter which translates as Praised be. It s official English title is Our Care for Our Common Home. Following are 5 misconceptions some Catholics and others have about the letter: 1. It s all about climate change. In this 72-page letter, there are about 2 pages in the beginning dedicated to climate change. There are additional references scattered throughout. The Pope accepts the conclusions of the majority of the scientific community that climate change is a reality, and he seeks to warn all people of its grave moral implications for the earth and all its creatures, including human beings. 2. The Pope is making up new teaching. Not! Throughout his document, the Pope refers to the teachings of modern popes starting with Pope St. John XXIII, and continuing with increasing intensity with the teachings of Pope Paul VI, Pope St. John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI. All of these popes have addressed the moral and practical consequences of unchecked human intervention and exploitation of the natural environment. He also uses the teachings of conferences of bishops throughout the world, including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Pope Francis synthesizes and applies these teachings to the issues of our day. 3. Science and religion shouldn t mix. They re not. They re dialoging with and complementing each other, as they should. They both address issues and concerns of human beings, albeit from different but not conflicting perspectives. Recent popes, especially Pope St. John Paul II, spoke frequently of the positive contributions of science to society, and for the need for science and religion to work hand-in-hand to address societal problems. The Galileo fiasco notwithstanding, the Catholic Church and the scientific community are now on good terms! 4. The Pope should stay out of politics. OK, this is a proverbial can of worms! Think of it this way: Governments are charged with the task of formulating and upholding policies that serve the common good. Granted, how to protect the common good, and even what is the common good, is subject to disagreement, even among people of good will. These are moral questions, questions about right and wrong and God s intentions for the world. As the followers of Jesus in this world, the Church and its leader understand themselves as charged to speak Jesus truth in the world in hope of influencing public policy. This applies to policies about the right to life from womb to tomb, the right to religious freedom, and the right to a healthy environment and the moral duty to act as responsible stewards of God s creation. 5. This is infallible papal teaching. In the entire history of the Church, papal infallibility has been exercised only twice: The Immaculate Conception of Mary and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Papal encyclicals contain serious teachings from our popes which we are bound to study, discuss and integrate into our lives as individuals and as a Church. They are not the only word or the last word on a subject. Come learn about and discuss Pope Francis new Encyclical Letter Laudato Si (Our Care for Our Common Home) Friday, July 10, 10:00 a.m. -12:00 noon Parish Center (Bagels served!) Presented & facilitated by Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate (If a group is interested in an EVENING discussion, contact Diane at or dvela@stbernardchurch.org.) Still, they come to us from someone who we believe was chosen by the Holy Spirit to lead us. We should listen. 7
8 Liturgy Corner FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 5, 2015 First Reading: God s communications may sometimes be more realistic than we would hope. Here, Ezekiel is called to be a prophet and warned that he will likely not find success. We might question the value of taking on such a mission. God s answer is simply They shall know that a prophet has been among them. No one who has heard a prophet can claim innocence through ignorance. Responsorial Psalm 123: This is a prayer designed to sustain one like Ezekiel. His heart cannot be set on accomplishment, or else he would soon find another occupation. Fixing our eyes on Christ, especially in a communal context, will show us the way through anything we need to face. Second Reading: Paul is offering us an example of selfless discipleship. He challenges us to accept our weakness as the religious and emotional space where we can best encounter God working in and through us. Gospel: Perhaps the best lesson this Gospel teaches us comes from the audience. Rather than reassess their way of thinking, they convinced themselves that Jesus, coming from a simple family known to all of them, couldn t possibly have a new message worthy of their attention. Are we ready to hear a divine message from a simple source? Saints of the Week Monday, July 6. St. Maria Goretti. Virgin and Martyr. Although St. Maria Goretti ( ) walked this earth for a short time, her life speaks to all generations. As a simple young girl born to poor farmers in Italy, she demonstrated a piety and zeal uncharacteristic of someone her age. Her life ended prematurely when she was murdered by a young man named Alessandro, because she would not succumb to his sexual advances. Right before she died, Saint Maria extended forgiveness to her attacker with the simple phrase, for the love of Jesus. The Passionists, a religious congregation founded by Saint Paul of the Cross, claim her as one of their own because she was raised in a parish staffed by Passionist priests. Thursday, July 9. Blessed Augustine Zhao Rong, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs. Between 1648 and 1930, eighty-seven Chinese Catholics and thirty-three Western missionaries, some of whom were Dominicans, Franciscans, Salesians, Jesuits, or Vincentians, were martyred for their ministry or for refusing to renounce their Christian faith. Many of the Chinese converts were killed during the Boxer Rebellion, a xenophobic uprising during which many foreigners were slaughtered by angry peasants. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese diocesan priest who was tortured and killed in 1815 after the Emperor Kia-Kin issued decrees banning Catholicism. Augustine Zhao Rong and the other Chinese martyrs were canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. Saturday, July 11. Saddened by the immoral state of society, St. Benedict of Nursia ( /7) left the city to live as a hermit in Subiaco. In time, more and more men were attracted to his charismatic personality as well as to his way of life. He eventually moved a group of monks to Monte Cassino, near Naples, where he completed the final version of his Rule, now known as The Rule of Saint Benedict, on the fundamentals of monastic life, including the day-to-day operation of a monastery. The Rule asserts that the primary occupation of the monk is to pray the Divine Office in tandem with a vowed life of stability, obedience, and conversion. The whole of the monastic vocation can be summarized in the opening line of his Rule, Listen carefully. St. Benedict is considered the father of Western monasticism. Sourcebook

"Not to oppose error is to approve it; and not to defend truth is to suppress it" Pope St. Felix III (492 A.D.) ISIS: "It is permissible to buy, sell, or...gift captives." A U.N. report reveals ISIS is selling children from Yazidi and Christian minorities as sex slaves, turning the mentally challenged into suicide bombers and crucifying or burying them alive if they disobey. (dailymail.com, 2/4/15) The U.N. report, while alarming, isn't surprising considering all the accounts of ISIS brutality. The self-proclaimed Islamic State, through its conquests and savagery, is in a quest to form a vast caliphate governed under a strict version of Sharia law. (cnn.com, 2/6/15) "Pope Francis and the Holy See have reiterated on a number of occasions that it is 'licit' to use force to stop these unjust aggressors and to protect religious minorities and civilians from horrendous attacks," said Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Louisville, KY, USCCB president. (usccb.org, 2/24/15) "and indeed, to neglect to confound evil men, when we can do it, is no less a sin than to encourage them." Pope St. Felix III (492 A.D.)
