Sophomores E mail Father Ralph: shepherd@stbernardchurch.org Planning Thanksgiving People who are responsible for their family s Thanksgiving dinner often make checklists for shopping, cooking, and serving. Without the lists they are bound to forget the cranberry sauce or some side dish is discovered in the fridge after all the guests are gone. I m grateful to the people in my life who have prepared Thanksgiving Dinner for us and grateful to God who has blessed us with so many riches. So one thing on my list each year is to take the time to show gratitude. I hope you ll join me and other members of our staff and parish for the 9am Mass on Thanksgiving morning. It is an hour of gratitude and community that makes Thanksgiving Day complete. And speaking of Greek words (see column to the right) the word for thanksgiving in Greek is Eucharist. So if we want to find the ultimate way of thanking God for life s blessings, we can find it in our being together to celebrate Eucharist on Thanksgiving Day. I like to ask second year high school students if they know what the word sophomore means. Often they don t. Then I explain it comes from two Greek words. Soph is also found in our English word sophisticated and the Greek root means wise. Mor is also found in our English word moron and the Greek root means foolish. So sophomore means wise-fool (or sophisticated moron??) This makes sense. By the time students have gotten through freshman year, they think they know everything (and thus consider themselves wise); yet we know that there is so much more they need to learn -- not only academically, but about themselves. Thus they are still foolish in thinking they know it all. In today s gospel (Matthew 25:1-13) Jesus tells the story of a wedding where the bridesmaids are waiting for the couple to arrive. Five are wise -- in that they are prepared with extra lamp oil -- and five are foolish -- in that they aren t prepared for a possible delay in the couples arrival. They run out of oil and while they are off buying some, the bride and bridegroom arrive and head off to the party and the foolish ones are left out. Jesus tells this story because he wants his followers to be prepared for his showing up. While we might know some people who live their lives totally unprepared for Jesus, and we might know some who live as if Jesus is with them, I suspect most folks are sophomore -- a bit wise and a bit foolish when it comes to Jesus. There are those who think that Jesus is only coming again at the end time. And yes, the fullness of his coming will be experienced then. But he s coming today too. We encounter him in the Eucharist. We meet him in the least of our brothers and sisters. We experience his presence in prayer. We see his handiwork in the beauty of the changing leaves and other natural wonders. We d be completely foolish to ignore his presence among us now. So stay awake! Be ready! Look around...where do you notice Jesus alive and active in generous, forgiving, peace-making, healing, feeding, hope-filled aspects of life? How prepared are you to greet him this day? 3
Parish News HELP WANTED: ST. MARTHA S SOCIETY St. Martha s Society is looking for those who can spare some time to wash and iron the small linen cloths that are used during Mass. We currently have 8 ladies who volunteer, which means that they help about every eight weeks (or 6 times a year). More hands make light work. We also are looking for seamstresses who can do minor repairs when needed. If you think you may be interested or have any questions, please contact our St. Martha s Society coordinator and Sacristan, Rose Marie Rotondo, at or see her at church. Mid-Week Mid-Morning Book Discussion: Snow in August In a working-class neighborhood in 1947 Brooklyn, an eleven-year-old Irish Catholic boy named Michael Devlin has just made friends with a lonely rabbi from Prague. For Michael, the rabbi opens a window to ancient learning and lore that rivals anything in Captain Marvel. For the rabbi, Michael illuminates the everyday mysteries of America, including the strange language of baseball. But like their hero Jackie Robinson, neither can entirely escape from the swirling prejudices of the time. Join your fellow parishioners on Wednesday, November 15 at 10 am in the Parish Center for an informal discussion of Pete Hamill s award-winning novel, Snow in August. For more information please contact Wally Rodier at or wrodi@verizon.net. 7 Adult faith formation Join in a local celebration of Christian unity next Sunday! As we move beyond those episodes in history that burden us, we pledge to witness together to God s merciful grace, made visible in the crucified and risen Christ. Aware that the way we relate to one another shapes our witness to the Gospel, we commit ourselves to further growth in communion rooted in Baptism, as we seek to remove the remaining obstacles that hinder us from attaining full unity. Christ desires that we be one, so that the world may believe (cf. John 17:21). From the Joint Statement of Unity of Pope Francis and the Lutheran World Federation, October 2016 The Long Island Lutheran-Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue is sponsoring a prayer service with an ecumenical choir and with the local Lutheran, Episcopalian, and Catholic bishops in attendance to pray for the unity of the one Church of Jesus Christ. Join us in Jesus prayer...that they may all be one (Jn. 17:21) (wine and cheese reception following) Pastoral Associate Diane Vella is a member of the Dialogue, and will be one of the worship leaders. 7

Congratulations! Saint Agnes Service Medal Saint Agnes Service Medal Steve and Kathy Scarallo were presented with the 2017 Saint Agnes Service Medal by Bishop Barres. Kathy and Steve have been devoted parishioners and involved members of the diocese for many years. Steve was on the Diocesan Pastoral Council. He currently leads the men's prayer group, is the chair of the Catholic Ministries Appeal in the parish and has just been appointed as Grand Knight of the Holy Innocents Knights of Columbus Council. Kathy serves the parish as a Welcome Ambassador for new parishioners, she is the coordinator for the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and is a Catholic Daughter. Kathy is coordinating the Exercise for Others charity campaign. Kathy has been an assistant in our Parish Social Ministry and served in our parish office before taking a position in the Catholic Ministries Office in the diocese. Both Kathy and Steve are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and lectors; as a couple they are involved in our marriage preparation program and FOCCUS. Their three grown children continue to live out the faith they have received from their parents -- a wonderful testimony to the care and example Kathy and Steve have shown in their own family and throughout the parish. Flying like an Eagle Jonathan Swift took on the challenge of renovating the school kitchen as his Boy Scout Eagle Project. He and his fellow scouts completely scrubbed and cleaned this neglected room and gave everything a fresh coat of paint. The place now gleams! Jonathan (seventh from left) and some of his crew. Many thanks to Tara Joyce from Sherwin Williams who donated all the paint and tools and to Lisa Davis from Lowes for the donation of the vinyl baseboard and adhesive. Jon also treated all his volunteers, their families and staff members to a celebratory dinner. Thank you to Jonathan for his leadership and hard work to make our kitchen work again. Our sparkling new kitchen. 11
Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organization of men and women, who seek, in a prayerful spirit of justice and charity, and by a personto-person involvement, to be present to those who are suffering. This Society has been part of St. Bernard s parish since November of 1955, when Levittown was still part of the Diocese of Brooklyn. For 62 years, dedicated parishioners have reached out to their low-income Levittown neighbors to provide food and other basic needs of living, substantially improving the quality of life for literally thousands of seniors, adults and children. At present, our Conference is looking to engage some new members to assist in this important Gospel imperative. If you think you might be interested, or want to know more, you are invited to call our office at and leave a message. One of our members will return your call. Membership requires a high level of commitment, but training and mentoring will provide the necessary tools for this very important ministry. Membership in the Society is a blessing, and the rewards are out-of-this-world! This week our pantry needs include: Cup-o-noodles Ramen noodles Beans canned or dry As always, thank you! Please remember the poor boxes and to buy one, get one free! Thanks to Margaret and Girl Scout Troop 3559: Thanks to our friends from Troop 3559 who are conducting a food drive for our pantry this Sunday, November 12 th at King Kullen. We are always grateful for support from the community as we reach out to those in need. Thanksgiving is Coming: Next weekend, we will be distributing Thanksgiving baskets of our pantry visitors. If you plan to make a basket, please let us know as soon as possible! Supermarket gift cards are also very helpful, so that our guests can purchase a ham or turkey. Please notify Gloria or Sister Christine if you will be doing this, so your contribution can be factored into this major project. Our office number is As, always, thank you for your kind generosity! Thanksgiving Clothing Drive: The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 19 th from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) to receive your gently used clothing. The Society is helped substantially by these donations which are sold very inexpensively in their thrift shops. If you have gently used, CLEAN clothing that you no longer need, please consider bringing it to the parking lot on your way to or from mass on Sunday, November 19 th! Exercise for Others: A good number of parishioners attended the Exercise for Others event which took place on October 28 th at the Sportset Health and Fitness Club in Rockville Centre. Spinning and Zumba left some sweaty and sore, but it was a wonderful day! Thanks to all who contributed and/or participated! Remember that the proceeds raised will be divided between Catholic Charities of the Diocese, and Levittown, Puerto Rico. Thanks again to Kathy Scarallo for her great organization of the event. We will let you know the totals as soon as we know what they are! HEAP the Federal Home Energy Assistance Program is now open to help low-income people receive aid with heating expenses. We have the income guidelines and applications. Call us if you have questions about your eligibility. This program can help keep you warm all winter if you qualify! 12

st. BernarD s Center for religious education Mrs. Susan Martin, M.A., Director, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award Congratulations are extended to three of our catechists who were recognized for their commitment and generosity. Last Tuesday at St. Agnes Cathedral, Bishop Brennan honored over 260 volunteers including our three who selflessly serve as teachers of our faith. Parishioner Joan Cushman was presented with the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton award which honors those who have contributed twenty-five years of outstanding service. Presently Joan is involved with the children's RCIA and coordinates the annual Christmas pageant with our younger students. Years ago, Joan created and begun this pageant with her own class but due to its popularity, the production has grown to include all students in levels 1 and 2. Catechists Donna Papa and Marjorie Kruk received the Pope Pius X award which was originally instituted by the National Diocesan Directors of Religious education.
