2 Brittney Wylie & Wilma Neal Cole Wall & Wilma Neal Tod Pritchard Memorial and St. Hugh Scholarship Awards 2016 Education reduces poverty is a quote shared at a Memorial Committee meeting by Virginia Thompson. Our Memorial Committee at St. Hugh has been granted the opportunity of awarding scholarships each year. Tod Pritchard Memorial Scholarship: The Doug and Arlene Pritchard family continues to offer this funding in honor of their son, Tod, who was a college student. The basis funding for this scholarship is located in a Diocesan Investment fund. Each year 10% of the value in the fund is taken out and given as a scholarship. Continued support of this scholarship can be donated through St. Hugh Memorial Committee designated for Tod Pritchard Memorial. St. Hugh Scholarship Fund: This fund was established in 1915 at St. Hugh. Last year was the first opportunity to award this fund and we are encouraged by the enthusiasm of those who have and continue to donate. Funding may be given in honor or memory of a loved one and because we believe in the importance of education for all. This year we were privileged to give scholarships of $ to 3 individuals. 3 Brittney Wylie who is attending Washington State University, received a St. Hugh Scholarship. Brittney has gone to WSU to study the art of becoming a Veterinarian. She has always loved and cared for animals and is determined to follow the path of caring for them in a deep and understanding manner. Her grandmother, Peggy Wylie, continues to encourage Brittney in this pursuit. Cole Wall received the Tod Pritchard Scholarship. Tod is a student at Peninsula College in Port Angeles where he has been a Running Start student in his Jr. and Sr. High School program. He plans to study Graphic Art and Automotive Programs in the area his talents seem to lie. He is the grandson of JoAnna Meyer. Nicholas Moore received a St. Hugh Scholarship and is studying at Portland Community College in Portland, OR. His current study is Computer Science and stated that the world of information is something I want to create. Nicholas is Robin and Dick Moore s grandson. We congratulate these three students and pray that education will truly fight poverty in their lives and in the lives of their families and friends. We give thanks for those who served on the Scholarship Task Force this year, Paddy Gilson, Donna Fisher, Ginna Liebergesell, and JoAnna Meyer. Wilma Neal, Memorial Committee 3

4 Circle The Date: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th, the Memorial Committee will be hosting an extended coffee hour, with a few games as well, serving all you can eat Walk Around Tacos. We will provide food and drinks, AND pens so you can fill out your Memorial Forms you know, the ones that you have been given in the past that are are gathering dust, forgotten, in a drawer! There will come a time when your friends and family will thank you for taking the time to do this, and the one person who will be ever so grateful is Linda! 5 Lectio Divina Class Concludes For the past month between members of St. Hugh and other area churches have attended a class on Thursday afternoons facilitated by The Rev. Robin Moore. The class focused on a method for reading Holy Scripture, that of Lectio Divina. This method is centuries old and over the years has experienced times of popularity and times of being put on the shelf. For some years now, there has been a resurgence of interest in this way of reading and being with Scripture. One thing that struck me when I first began reading the book was the thought that the Bible was intended to be God s love letter to all of us. The term Lectio Divina literally means divine reading and the steps are (1) reading the printed words (lectio), (2) meditating on the words (meditatio) and this does not signify meditating as we think of the term. In terms of this type of Scripture reading, meditation refers to gnawing on the words, thinking about their context in the overall story, letting your imagination explore options and thoughts. Next comes (3) praying about and with the words (oratio). In this step you may pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit to be present as you strive to have the words of the Scripture come alive for you. After that (4) you enter into a silent, peaceful space, resting with God (contemplatio). As with the meditatio, contemplatio is not like the contemplation we have had experience with.that of thinking about something. In this step, you empty yourself of thoughts, you do a brain dump to forget to do lists, agendas or timeframes. You simply find a quiet spot and still your busy mind so that God can speak to you. During this step it is important to pay attention to your breathing and posture. Find a comfortable position where you feel open to receive God. Contemplatio is probably the most difficult step because we have been enculturated to think we, or our mind, has to be busy doing something all the time. In order to hear what God wants to speak to us about, we have to still our minds and bodies to allow God s word to be heard. The book that this class is based on is called Discovering Lectio Divina; Bringing Scripture into Ordinary Life. It is authored by James C. Wilhoit and Evan B. Howard. I found this book to be easy to read and understand with lots of real life stories and anecdotes which helped to illustrate the points made. The authors point out that many people do several of the Lectio Divina steps simultaneously. Many people can read, chew on the words and meaning, explore ideas and keep a prayerful demeanor at the same time. We all process information differently and if your mind works that way, more power to you. The last step of contemplatio cannot be adequately done while your mind is occupied elsewhere. Personally, I find that it is helpful to use the steps separately as described. This is really a powerful way of reading studying Scripture and I can highly recommend this process and the book. Mark your calendars for 24 September when we will be given the opportunity for a wonderful learning experience at St. Hugh. The Rev. Patricia Robertson will facilitate a retreat on The Wisdom Jesus. 8 ECW The August 8 ECW meeting will be at Ginna and Syl s on Monday, August 8. The meeting will begin at 10:30 and will be followed by a light lunch. Feel free to dig clams (please bring your own buckets.. we have shovels!) and walk the beach. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex. Carpooling from the church is necessary as parking is extremely limited. A Holy Waste of Time Retreat! We have received an invitation for our young adults to attend a retreat entitled "A Holy Waste of Time Retreat" to be held at St. Andrew's House on the Hood Canal August 12-14, It will be a time of fun, worship and time away with activities including kayaking and swimming, hiking, playing board games, reading, relaxing, worshiping in the chapel. All meals and single/couple/family bunkroom bedrooms available. Kids welcome. Cost is $45.00 Registration encouraged by 1 August. After this weekend, there will be a brochure and postcards with information available in the church narthex.
