1 St. Hugh News & Views May 2017 Edition In Honor Of The Fallen 280 E Wheelwright St. S./ P. O. Box 156 Allyn, WA Phone: Web Page: st.hugh.allyn@gmail.com St. Hugh Supports Cathedral Campaign The congregation of St. Hugh has always been a very loving and giving church family. As you all know we work hard on our two fund-raising events annually to raise money which we donate back to the community in the form of outreach. Each year we give approximately $11, from our fund-raisers; that is in addition to the budgeted amount of around $7, that we give each year. We also provide scholarships each spring to deserving individuals pursuing educational goals. Around January of this year we received a letter from the Diocese informing their parishes that the Cathedral is in need of repairs and upgrading. These renovations are both for safety and energy efficiency reasons. The congregation of St. Mark s has raised $7.5M toward their goal, but they cannot do it alone. Nor should they be expected to, as St. Mark s Cathedral serves all Episcopalians in Western Washington as well as the community. Concerts, Lectures, Classes and worship services are available to anyone wishing to participate. We were asked to indicate in what way we would provide financial support to the renovation project. Discussions were held with the Bishop s Committee and also at the Annual Meeting. We determined that for three years we would take up a special collection throughout Lent and provide that offering to the Diocese to be used for the Cathedral renovations. This was the first of three years for the special collection and we raised $698.00; a total of 21 persons making contributions. I think for our small parish this is an amazing outpouring of support for our Diocese. Additionally, we were asked to take up a special Good Friday Offering to support the Episcopal churches in the Middle East and 9 people contributed a total of $ The generosity of this small congregation is truly inspiring, giving substantive meaning to the scripture telling us for it is in giving that we receive. Thank you for the many ways that your generous giving builds up our faith community as well as our community at large. Faithfully, Vicki+

6 St. Hugh Annual Patio Sale All Hale! All Hale! All Hale! All Hale! We look forward to our Annual Patio Sale. Saturday, July 15 th this year is the date because it goes with Allyn Days we know it will be great! With Lois S. and Carol K. leading the way we save our donations to lovingly display. Be thinking of the tasks that you would like to do. Signup sheets will soon be ready for you to give time and effort the week before; and be there to welcome the customers at our door. The dollars that we raise on this very special day; God shows us where to put it as we give it all away! Yay! Thanks for a wonderful evening at your Mardi Gras celebration. Here is the recipe that so many asked for: PRALINE COOKIES 3/4 cup butter 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/2 cups sifted flour 1 cup chopped pecans Method: Cream butter until smooth, add sugar, egg and beat until smooth. Add vanilla. Sift in flour and blend thoroughly. Stir in nuts. until well distributed. Shape by level tablespoon and shape into a ball (I ended up using a smaller spoon). Flatten the balls to 1/4 inch thickness on a buttered baking sheet. Place them at least 1 inch apart. Bake at 375 deg. for 15 min. but I found that I checked them often and they did not need that long a baking time. Cool on baking sheet for 2-3 min. then remove to cake racks. Be careful when doing that as they break easily. Makes about 3 doz. cookies. Berit Riddle From The Kitchen of Berit Riddle 6
