1 St. Hugh News & Views September Edition 280 E Wheelwright St. S./ P. O. Box 156 Allyn, WA What a Day! Sunday, 19 August was a celebratory day for the congregation of St. Hugh! We were delighted to have The Rev. Robin Moore attend worship services with us and we took this opportunity to dedicate the Peace Pole to her in the recognition of the many years that she served the congregation of St. Hugh. She was our vicar and mentored several circles of people called to ministry in the Total Common Ministry model of being church. She also served the congregation of St. Nicholas, Tahuya and the Diocese of Olympia in the position of Missioner to several TCM churches from Allyn to Cathlamet in southern Washington. It was a beautiful morning when we met at 9:30 to conduct a short dedication ceremony which was developed by Garby Elmore. In this service, we were able to honor both women who gave so much of themselves for this small, loving congregation. The Peace Pole is inscribed with words from three Abrahamic faiths, Hebrew, Greek and Arabic as a reminder that we are all neighbors in faith, love, and peace. Thank you for your love and service Robin; and thank you Garby for your efforts to introduce us to this Peace Pole, a fitting tribute and dedication to love and tolerance. After worship services, 12 congregation members traveled to Tacoma to attend the Tacoma Rainiers vs. Fresno Grizzlies baseball game at the Cheney Stadium. Our seats were great and we enjoyed the game and the gourmet lunch. The Rainiers won, and it was a treat to see some of the players who had played with the Mariners during the year like Ben Gamel. This is always a fun outing. Thank you to Barry Betsinger for coordinating this year s trip to take us out to the ballgame! Faithfully, Vicki Phone: st.hugh.allyn@gmail.com Web Page:

2 At the August ECW meeting, church women discussed how we can increase what we are already doing to make our hospitality events ecologically friendly and sustainable, yet keep much of the efficiency we have developed. Thinking about sustainability is especially important as regards the problems associated with single-use plastic in its many forms. Among the suggestions being considered is to, where possible and prudent, apply the three R s to plastic: Refuse: refuse to purchase and use plastic that can only be used once and must be thrown away. Items such as plastic coffee stirrers, drink straws, drink cups, toothpicks, trash bags, and forks, knives and spoons are some examples of single-use plastic that can be avoided by using non-plastic substitutes that can be safely discarded. And where feasible, church flatware, glasses and plates can be used and washed. Reuse: reuse plastic, for example plastic tablecloths, platters, tubs and zip bags where doing so can be accomplished hygienically and by meeting health standards. Recycle: recycle appropriate types of plastic, such as water/juice bottles, jugs, tubs, jars, buckets and plant pots as designated in the Recycling Reminders published by Mason County Garbage and Recycling, which is the church recycling company. (The Reminders are included in this N&V issue and will be posted at the church.) Just empty accepted plastic containers, rinse quickly and do not include any lids. No plastic bags, clam-shell containers or plastic wrap are accepted (grocery bags can be recycled at the grocery store) and no glass is accepted (glass can be held aside and taken to local transfer stations for free recycling). Recycling Reminders clarifies what is accepted. At ECW meetings, we will be discussing how we can build on what we are already doing to make our hospitality events and the church as a whole more ecologically friendly. Eliminating single-use plastic is just one idea; many more ideas have been suggested. Shares your ideas too! Brooke Quigley bquig@mac.com 2

5 Proceeds from the 2018 Patio Sale At our last ECW Meeting it was suggested I provide this information so it is clear for all to see. Here it is: $ 2, Main Cashiers Bake Sale Cinnamon Rolls Ice Cream $ 3, Total Proceeds (111.00) Total Expenses $ 3, Net Proceeds You might like to note that at the end of Patio Sale Day, our total proceeds was at $2, That means we brought in about $1,000 after that. The last income came in on 8/19 when the sale of ice cream brought in $20. Good job, ladies! Psalm 119:114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. 5

6 ECW MEETING MINUTES, AUGUST 13, 2018 The ECW meeting was called to order by co-president Patty Funk at 10:33 am. Present were: Lois, Marley, Sunny, Betty, Gina, Sarah, Syl, Brenda, Jinx, Brooke, Wilma, Connie, Hazel, Patty, Donna and Marlene. Prior to offering the opening prayer, Syl thanked everyone for the cards, letters, and flowers given to her after her recent surgery. Hazel was thanked for being the hostess for the meeting and Brenda passed the piggy. The minutes from the July meeting were read; Hazel was thanked for recording the minutes in Syl's absence. TREASURER'S REPORT: Sunny stated there is a balance of $ balance in the treasury, which includes $ from the Patio Sale and $150 from Joanna Meyer's estate which is to purchase aprons for the women when they serve in the kitchen. There was a brief discussion as to the type of aprons, one with the Episcopal shield, but no firm decision was made at this time. COALITION: Sunny reported that Naomi Woodland is the new coordinator. A $1000 donation came from United Way. 168 kids are being supported which also includes pre-school siblings. During vacations, breakfast and lunch are provided; backpacks on school weekends. ALTAR GUILD: Brooke made a proposal about the usage of single-usage plastic and suggested that we divest of such usage by September 30. A discussion ensued as to what items are recyclable and which must be trashed. She suggested that we use wood stirrers, that we wash and re-use plastic hygienically and purchase items which can be recycled. She also suggested that ECW develop a mission statement regarding environmental practices. KITCHEN REPORT: Lois reported that all is going well. SUNSHINE COMMITTEE: Gina reported that Peggy Wylie has just had surgery and is recovering well. She will bring her flowers today and Marlene will send off the card we all signed. OLD BUSINESS: Lois was thanked for her leadership of the Patio Sale. It was suggested that we perhaps limit the scope of the sale so as not to include the sanctuary. Due to the lateness of the meeting, further discussion was tabled at this time. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Connie and Wilma are chairpersons. It will be November 3 from 9-2. It was decided to make Krusteez Cinnamon Swirl coffee cake in place of scones and to have grilled cheese sandwiches along with the soup, $3 a bowl. Sunny will again do the soups, with a new addition this year: tomato/basil. Marlene has some hand-made Christmas cards to offer and Connie some tree ornaments. Linda will again do lights in a bottle and glass block. Troy will cut out wooden angels, and Brenda will make plastic bag holders. Christmas pillows, linens and framed pictures will also be sold. August 19 at 9:30 there will be the dedication of the Peace Pole to Robin Moore. The Tacoma Rainier's game will be after the service. Bishop Rickel will be present on September 30 to receive, baptize and confirm members and after the service there will be an Oktoberfest meal planned by Wilma and Marlene. A sign-up sheet was passed around. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:16. Respectfully submitted, Sylvia Haase, secretary 6
