THANKS to Barb Pearson for her leadership & generosity; Jerry Good for his kindness & wit; Ray Thompson for his generous planning & persevering; Sylvia Haase for her continuous care of others; Jennifer Pratt for her intelligence so freely shared; Christie Logan for her wisdom & kindness; Jim Neal for his love and care of our church; Karen Kennedy for her care & love of children; Vicki Betsinger for her continuous learning and humor; Kim McNamara for her willingness to serve with Grace and to Robin Moore for her loving insight into St. Hugh & our future. St. Hugh is blessed with clergy that are attentive to the needs of our congregation in all ways. They each have a talent that compliments one another. Whether it's serving at the altar, teaching classes, pastoral duties, mentoring, sermons, and taking part in all the church events...they are always available. What a blessing for ALL of us at St. Hugh! Connie & Roy It is impossible to single out any one clergy as each one has done a remarkable job in their own special way. From day one we have felt so very welcomed and admire all the clergy for their open arms, warm hospitality, and unending time and energy they give to St Hugh. 3 We Love our Clergy! Thank You for everything you do!! I am thankful for Robin Moore, who initiated the Ministry of the Baptized as a way to worship, to build St Hugh, and to grow. I appreciate very much the variety of priests, deacons and lay people who serve. One can never get bored. Each participant contributes from his own unique gifts to the worship each Sunday. Yet we are all one who are joined together with the Sacraments. We are blessed with the presence of seven priests. I am especially fond of deacons, perhaps because I was married to one. I know their role is to protect people in need. I love to hear Deacon Sylvia read the Gospel and bring Eucharist to those who cannot come to Church. I love listening to Deacon Karen's sermon and to talk to her at coffee hour about babies. What I am most thankful for is that you are there, Sunday after Sunday, to proclaim the Gospel, to offer the Sacraments and God's blessing to whoever comes to worship. It takes faithfulness, skill, learning and cooperation. How does it happen? It must be the Holy Spirit. 4 A Note from Mission to Seafarers : Dear Friends, In a few short months we will again be celebrating the holidays with our families. For several thousand seafarers this is a time that reinforces their sense of loneliness and isolation. They will be literally half a world away without family and friends. But these humble men and women will not be forgotten! The Mission to Seafarers will distribute holiday gifts we call them ditty bags filled with hats, toiletries, candy, and sometimes a bible to many of these guests as they reach the Port of Seattle. We will go on board and provide a Ditty Bag filled with these items for each crew member. Our goal this year is to raise funds and accumulate enough product to fill 2,000 ditty bags. What will we need? Deodorant Shampoo (16oz bottles) Toothpaste ( oz) Knit or Fleece Hats Small New Testaments or Gospels of John Playing cards Disposable Razors Toothbrushes (single packs only) Bar Soap Costco, Target, and The Dollar Store are great sources many individuals buy a case of soap, or shampoo, or shaving cream, others buy individual items. We welcome both. Some churches have set goals for ditty bags AND the stuff to go inside! Churches sometimes buy soap, toothbrushes, shampoo or deodorant in large quantities. We hope you will carefully note the sizes: The really HUGE stuff won t fit in the bags (a little larger than a shoe bag), but travel sizes will work perfectly! Gifts of cash are really helpful as we always need to get a little more of some items. We will be glad to pick up the donations from local churches and again this year we will have an ingathering of donated items at our table during convention October Please feel free to send your donations with your delegates, and we will collect them. Many local churches have knitters and folks who do small crafts who gather on a Saturday or during the week to knit hats what a great community-builder! The Mission to Seafarers annual Ditty Bag Day event will again take place at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in West Seattle. We will be putting the bags together onsaturday, November 19, 2016 beginning at 10:00 a.m. We will also be having a pot luck this year, so bring a dish to share as we make a huge impact on the seafaring community. 5 St. Hugh Property Use Task Force Help us establish a St. Hugh Property Use Plan for the future. We were recently in dialog with the Episcopal Retirement Community (ERC) as they explored a possible site for a new Retirement / Independent Living facility. They own and manage two facilities now: Canterbury Manor in Bremerton; St. Andrews Place in Port Angeles. Our three lots above our church did not fit their plans this year but they will keep us in their future plans. I believe we could have been better prepared to describe Lakeland Village, the Allyn and the Grapeview areas, and our St. Hugh Community. We will also look at the St. Hugh building use and potential future expansion: space for fellowship, receptions, hosting meetings, classes, community organizations, etc. The original concept design plan included a second building to the South. When our property was purchased, it consisted of 11 acres. It was subdivided into a 5-acre parcel on which we built the church and three 2-acre parcel that are wooded and to the west of our church. Possible Task Objectives: 1. Study the original building design plans. 2. Walk the current property and mark the corner of the lots. 3. Perform a need assessment for the use of a possible expansion. 4. Visit other churches that have created expansion plans. 5. Develop a possible time line and conceptual design ideas. 6. Communicate to the St. Hugh Family, Diocese and ERC Board the results of our planning. 6 From Forward Movement: Prayer through the final pre-election month Forward Movement is offering a structure for 30 Days of Prayer, beginning October 9 and ending on November 9, the day after the U.S. presidential elections. From its letter of introduction: In the United States, we are in the midst of a contentious election season. Potential voters are discerning how to vote, but observers inside and outside the country are also watching the candidates closely. Opinions are sharply divided. What kind of leaders do we need? What is the best way forward for our nation? Indeed, what are the challenges we must solve together? I ve heard people say, again and again, I m not sure what to do. For Christians, there is always one thing we can do, every one of us. We can pray. We can pray for wisdom, for grace, for patience, for courage, for hope. We can and must pray for those with whom we disagree. Whatever else we do, we must pray. We might use our own words, or we might like some language to give voice to our concerns and hopes. We Anglicans are blessed with riches of common prayer PRAYERS FOR WEEK 1 OCT 9 Pray for elections at the national, state, and local. OCT 10 Pray for the whole human. OCT 11 Pray for our leaders and all in civil. OCT 12 Pray for the mission of the Church, especially in this time of division. OCT 13 Pray for national and state leaders. OCT 14 Pray for peace. Thank You Inmate sewing group needs cloth quilting scraps: Jeanine from the Washington Corrections Center leads the Inmate Blanket Brigade. As a means of giving back to the community, inmates make blankets from scraps of old jackets and pants. Using these materials, they learn the quilt and knit hats and other items that are donated to local non-profits. But they need material to help them help Turning Pointe and other non-profits. If you have material you can donate, please drop it off at Turning Pointe anytime.
