1 St. Hugh News & Views November 2017 Edition 280 E Wheelwright St. S./ P. O. Box 156 Allyn, WA Phone: Web Page: st.hugh.allyn@gmail.com All Saint's Service; a Time of Remembrance All Saint's Day is 1 November. Each year we celebrate this Feast Day on the first Sunday in November; this year it will be celebrated on 5 November. All Saint's Day was first celebrated in the Western Church in the 7th century but in the Eastern Church it dates back to the 4th century. In the beginning it was a day to remember and commemorate those martyrs who gave up their lives for their faith; who gave up their lives so those who followed them could worship freely and without fear. Over the years, the celebration of this Feast Day has expanded to include not only recognized saints and martyrs but our own loved ones who have passed from this realm into the next. Yesterday I went out on our deck to change the food in my hummingbird feeder. Two sounds were readily apparent...rushing water and splashing salmon. The creek that is at the bottom of our ravine has been dry all fall but with the recent heavy rains, the creek is running again and the salmon can struggle upstream to complete their cycle of life. I stood there for a few minutes thinking about this cycle and about our upcoming All Saint's Day service. Watching those valiant salmon move against the rushing water to propel themselves to their ultimate goal reminded me of the difficult obstacles our ancestors faced. They lived their lives, sometimes struggling against mighty forces to provide a life and legacy for their children and grandchildren. Most of our ancestors came from a faraway land, crossing oceans, learning a new language, vocation and customs so that their children might have a life of choice, of freedom, of opportunity. This year as we solemnly acknowledge those saints in our lives, let us also celebrate with thanksgiving the profound ways in which our lives have been influenced by them. Faithfully, Vicki+

2 Turning Pointe Shelter Needs Think about the holidays coming up for those less fortunate than ourselves. What could you donate to make those food backpacks a little extra special this season? Thanksgiving is right around the corner, The food bank can always use an extra cookie mix or bag of potatoes. Maybe a real treat of a small ham or turkey? Coffee Oasis is doing a Christmas project for homeless teens that don t get any presents on Christmas maybe that is where you would like to change the world for just ONE teenager who dreads the holiday season. Can we skip that one latte today and spend that $5 on a child s gift for the angel tree or somewhere else? God has blessed us abundantly I pray we pass that forward and show those around us that they matter in this world. God Bless and Happy Holidays! 3 This month we acknowledge 500 years since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation To Our Christian Sisters and Brothers, As early Christians in turbulent times, who wrote and carried messages like living letters over long distances to one another, we are writing to you now. As Christians, we all follow and trust Jesus. His life, ministry, death and resurrection are the sources of our unity in the city, region, nation, and world. It is in the spirit of living into the unity we already have in Christ that we are writing to you today. Christ is building his church, and there is no distance or obstacle that can thwart his purposes. This month we acknowledge 500 years since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. This anniversary opens an opportunity for us to engage one another. In particular, we believe that Christians in this city and region in a time of rifts and division are poised and equipped by the Spirit for a series of honest conversations with one another. Our challenges provide an opportunity for all of us, as the Body of Christ, to speak with one another in love, and to seek one another s counsel in matters of brokenness, repentance, truth telling, forgiveness, grace, and more. As Christians, we affirm the following convictions: 1. We follow Jesus 2. Our society is experiencing fear and brokenness 3. The world requires transformation 4. We have been given a calling and purpose 5. We live in and care for our city or town And so, we hope you will join us for a season of conversation and discernment in the months ahead, during this 500th year. We are meeting on three specific dates for conversations and prayerful engagement. These will be conversations with those who do not regularly encounter one another. These proposed dates and themes are: November 16, :30 11 AM What is the Christian response to what divides us? January 22, :30 1 PM How is the Spirit at work in this region? February 27, :30 1 PM How can we together bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ in this region? Scripture teaches us to Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). In and through this Spirit, we ask that you commit to joining in these conversations. Catering will be provided for our gatherings. Please RSVP by Wednesday, November 1st to livingletterseattle@gmail.com, after you will receive further details.
