1 St Felix Catholic Parish th St., Freedom, PA A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 14-15, 2018 MASS SCHEDULE Saturday 4 pm, Sunday 11 am Mon-Thurs 9:00 am (Tues: St. Anthony Novena) A Teacher s gift If you re lucky, once in your lifetime you ll have a teacher like Jean Louise Stellfox. Miss Stellfox came from a small town in the Appalachian coal fields. When she was a student at Dickinson College in 1959, the poet Robert Frost visited the campus. Frost s visit inspired the young college student to become an English teacher. After graduation, Jean returned to Shamokin, Pa. For the next 39 years she taught English at Shamokin High School. She became a legend there: Though she never raised her voice, her presence alone could quiet the rowdiest of students. She was kind and caring, but demanding and exacting. Her students memorized Hamlet s soliloquy, learned the names of all the Greek gods of mythology, endured a spelling test every Friday, and read and read Alexander Pope, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost (of course), Edith Wharton, her beloved Shakespeare. Though she never married, she was not alone. Her students were her family. She never forgot a student. Over the years, she taught the children and grandchildren of students from her first years of teaching. More than a few of her students were inspired by her example to become teachers. Jean Stellfox died in 2003 at the age of 64 she was killed crossing a street near her house by a hit-and-run driver. Hundreds and hundreds of her students attended her funeral. But Jean Stellfox is not done teaching. Jean Stellfox lived quietly and frugally but she saved prodigiously and invested wisely. She left an estate valued at over $1.5 million. In her will, she instructed that her estate to be used to create a fund at Dickinson College to bring renowned writers to campus. Miss Stellfox wanted future generations of students to be inspired by gifted men and women of letters as she had been inspired by Robert Frost in As the Risen Jesus appears to the Eleven "as flesh and bone, Jesus calls us to be flesh and bone witnesses of his resurrection, to be flesh and bone compassion and justice to all. In calling us to be witnesses of his resurrection, Jesus asks us to live his Gospel of peace and reconciliation in the simplicity of our everyday lives, in the complexities of our work places, in the struggle to realize our hopes and dreams for ourselves and our families. Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, Have you anything here to eat? You Are The Witnesses Of These Things To be a witness to something can have a double meaning. On the one hand, a witness is someone who sees something occur, in order that they might tell others about it. On the other hand, a witness is one who testifies to something neither seen nor heard, yet nonetheless true. Unless we are nearly 2,000 years old, we are not witnesses in the first sense to the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. Yet, by faith, we are witnesses in the second sense. By our baptism we are called to witness to the love of God through our words and actions which are to be reflections of the love of Jesus. In the coming weeks and months, the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative will ask us to build new relationships with nearby parishes, an opportunity to witness to the love of God alive in our hearts. While this may seem like a burden to some, it is at the heart of the Christian life as we build up the Body of Christ, the Church. As we grow in love of others, may we treat them as if THEY are Christ, and treat them as if WE are Christ. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. TV MASS FOR THE HOMEBOUND Please share the news about Sunday TV Mass at 6:30 AM on WINP (ION) Channel 16, (Comcast Channel 4), Verizon Fios Channel 16, Dish Network channel 250 and Direct TV channel 305. 4 STEWARDSHIP OF THE LORD S TREASURE Date Collection Weekly Operating Expense April 1, 2018 $1,993. Weekly Over/Under Easter Offering $1,005. $2, $ PSP Goal 2018 $16, Collected $6, There will be a Second Collection for Parish Share the weekend of May Please be generous, and know that any monies collected beyond our assessment stay in the parish for our use. SECOND COLLECTION FOR THE FELICIAN SISTERS IN HAITI, MAY 5-6 Five years ago, the Felician Sisters of North America responded to the needs of the people of Haiti, who had been devastated by the earthquake of Two sisters departed for Haiti in September 2012 to begin the Felician Ministry of Presence. The sisters began their ministry with open minds and open hearts, wanting to respond to the needs of the people as they strove to rebuild their lives and their community. Their goal was, and is, to empower Haitians to help Haitians. The mission has grown beyond imagining over these five years, providing medical care, meals, clean water, faith formation, and educational opportunities. All this is possible because of the generosity of men, women, and children, of parish and school communities with missionary hearts, who want to support the sisters as they accompany the Haitian people. WE NEED YOUR HELP Weekly envelope packets are sent to 225 St. Felix Parish families monthly. However, we only regularly receive offerings back from about 1/3 of the families (average of 70). In spite of economically running the parish on a shoestring, by doing things such as having Mass in the rectory during the cold months, carrying only 3 part-time employees, and having to pay just a third of the priests salaries, we are still averaging a $ shortfall on our needed income of $2500 per week. What is being asked of each of you that is able, is to consider giving a little more in your weekly offering. Whether that is an extra $1, $5, or more is something for you to decide, but your generosity would be greatly appreciated. Please, do what you can to help us overcome this shortfall. St. Felix is thankful to Willie Hoenig, who on behalf of the Monaca VFD #1 purchased almost all of our unused bingo supplies recently. It is truly wonderful that items that are not needed in one place are truly appreciated somewhere else.
