I hope that you all had a great holiday and are all well rested and ready to begin another busy term. STAFF NEWS Our congratulations is extended to Karen Costabile (Senior School Teacher and Numeracy Leader) and her husband Rick on the birth of their little boy Levi. We wish them all the best. NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN) During May students from Years 3 & 5 participated in the NAPLAN tests. The national tests assessed student achievement in Literacy and Numeracy. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in schools across Australia, completed the same tests on the same days. The tests covered the content strands of Literacy and Numeracy. The Literacy testing involved Reading, Writing and Language Conventions (which comprises spelling, grammar and punctuation). The Numeracy testing involved Number, Algebra, Function and Pattern, Space and Measurement, and Chance and Data. The results from the assessment program will be used for: 1. Individual student reports to parents 2. School reporting to their communities, and 3. Aggregate reporting against national standards. Parents will receive information on their child s performance through an individual report indicating achievement in the above mentioned areas. Student results will be distributed tomorrow.

2 SACRAMENT OF PENANCE (RECONCILIATION) First Reconciliation will be celebrated on Tuesday 15 th October commencing at 7.00pm at Resurrection Church. This weekend, Reconciliation Candidates will be presented to our Parish community at the Reconciliation presentation Masses. Next Tuesday they will receive the Sacrament for the first time. Confession, Penance, Reconciliation have fallen into a bit of a black hole in Catholic practice today. We have just come out of "the golden age" of frequent confession of the s and the pendulum seems to have swung the other way. Catholics seem to have shifted from an attitude that saw Confession to a priest as the only way of being forgiven to a wider understanding of Reconciliation. This, in itself, is a good thing yet it raises the raw question, Who needs to go to a priest for forgiveness; why go to Confession at all? To reconcile is to re-unite, to bring back to harmony, to heal division, separation, and rupture. The Christian perspective seeks reconciliation with God, with one another, between nations and with our environment. The life of Jesus was totally dedicated to RECONCILIATION; the life of Christ's faithful, the Church, is to be a symbol of this reconciliation. Also, to see the relevance of this Sacrament is to answer questions about its role in our lives. The emphasis has been misunderstood in the past. I don't have to go to a priest to be forgiven! is hardly the issue. The issue is that this sacrament allows a person, within a communal setting, a CONSTANT EXPERIENCE of on-going awareness of Conversion, a changing of life, a changing of mind and heart. Did you ever notice that people usually don't question the community dimensions of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Matrimony, Holy Orders, or even Anointing of the Sick? But they always seem to question the need for an instrument, a human mediator, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation! Why? Because confessing one's sins to another human being is difficult. It is often embarrassing. But that is part of the power of sacramental reconciliation. It makes one honest and humble before God through a human instrument, little chance for self-deception here! RECONCILIATION, as one of the seven sacraments, is a new moment of grace and a time of awareness about our personal and social sin, calling us to remember our Baptismal commitment, our life confirmed in the Spirit, our unity with the Eucharistic people. SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Congratulations to the children who will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday. Thanks to the following staff members for their work in preparing the children for this Sacrament: Mrs Bretag, Mrs Krajina, Miss Barrie, Mrs Sorokowski, Miss Du Pratt and Mr Dalton. Special thanks to Mrs Frances Barone (Religious Education Leader) and Mrs Pauline Debrincat (Parish Catechist) for their efforts in organising the many aspects of the celebration. Your efforts are much appreciated by the Reconciliation children and their families!

Work has also continued in the new garden area, with shade sails in the process of being placed up outside the library and the Performing Arts room. If your child is not wearing the correct school uniform, please send a note to school giving the reason why your child is out of uniform. 4 PREP 2014 INFORMATION NIGHT On Tuesday 22 nd October at 7.00 pm we will have our Prep 2014 Information Night. This will be held in the Senior School Building and will provide Prep 2014 parents the opportunity to hear from staff about what happens at our school. This will be an opportunity for parents to have all of their questions about starting school answered. Please note this meeting is for parents only. This night is targeted to new 2014 families to our school. CLASS PREPARATIONS FOR 2014 As written by Mr Kremers in a previous newsletter, during the coming weeks our staff will be working on the placement of students into their class groupings for Staff will draw on their overall knowledge of each student and attempt to balance the diverse personalities and skills into the appropriate groups. This knowledge is based upon the observations, discussions and achievements of each student in light of conversations with parents throughout the year. This is quite a time-consuming and challenging process as we attempt to place children into groupings that best meet their needs. If you have any information with regard to your child s needs, please write to me BY TOMORROW. Remember once classes are announced, it is too late! FUNDRAISING MEETING Our Fundraising Meeting will be held on Wednesday 16 th October at 9.00am in the Community Room (toddlers welcome). Come along and join in our discussion for fundraising ideas. 5 SAVE THE DATE: SCHOOL BUSH DANCE On Friday 8th November all families are invited to come along and join us in a night of fun and dancing. We will be entertained by the Blackberry Jam Bush Band. More information to follow. CYBERSAFETY At Resurrection we aim to create and maintain a cyber-safety culture that is in keeping with our values and with professional obligations. Parents/caregivers play a critical role in developing knowledge, understanding and ethics around their child s safety and safe practices regardless of the time of day. Being cyber-safe is no exception. It has come to our attention that a number of students here at school are using the relatively new app, Kik. It is another of the smartphone messenger apps. Unfortunately even though this sounds like a wonderful new app we are letting you as parents know that we have been made aware of some incidents which have caused some of our students to receive very inappropriate and uncomfortable texts. The age limit, terms and conditions of use of Kik are outlined below and can be found at: How old does my teen need to be to use Kik? Teens between 13 and 18 years old need to have permission from their parent or legal guardian before they create a Kik account and start using Kik Messenger. How can I prevent my teen from using Kik? With access to your teen's ipad (3G), ipod, iphone or Android phone, you can uninstall Kik and use the device's built-in parental control settings to restrict the ability to install applications. Why is Kik rated 17+? We changed the rating on our app to 17+ when we introduced new features. CARNIVAL OF COLOUR Thanks again to everyone who supported our Art Show during the last week of last term. Our class masterpieces featured in our local paper. Aana from Year 1 showcased some of our wonderful artworks.
