2 PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM JANUARY 20TH 2018 From the Desk of Father Mac January 27-February 2 is National Catholic Schools Week. The theme for this year is Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. As the pastor of Saint Cyril s, I am enormously proud of our school. Under the outstanding leadership of our principal Mr. Ryan Halveson, our vice-principal Mrs. Angelica Pugliese, and our dedicated faculty and staff, our school has a reputation for excellence and thanks to the support of the Foundation For Saint Cyril of Jerusalem School, we have been able to focus on technology, innovation, and faculty development. Saint Cyril School is a rigorous academic environment that requires critical thinking and problem solving. St. Cyril s is truly a place where our students learn, serve, lead, and succeed. Here are just a few highlights about our school: We have SmartBoards in every classroom, an updated wireless network, Macbook Lab, video production class, robotics program, a school-wide ipad program (including a one-to-one in 5th - 8th grade). Hands-on, project-based learning activities to connect learning to real life, including a K-8 STEM-aligned science curriculum (STEMScopes) Extensive opportunities in the arts (music, theatre, art), school athletics (volleyball, basketball, softball, football, track, and swimming), and a range of after-school programs (Tae- Kwon-Do, chess, Irish Step, coding/programming, science, theatre arts, etc.). The Class of 2018 were accepted into many local private schools with honors at entrance and academic scholarship offers. These schools include: Alemany, Campbell Hall, Chaminade, Crespi, Louisville, Loyola, Notre Dame, and Providence. Past alumni have been valedictorians at Louisville, Notre Dame, Crespi, and Marymount high schools. St. Cyril alumni who have recently graduated high school were accepted to Stanford, Annapolis, UCLA, Berkeley, Notre Dame, John Hopkins, NYU, and other prestigious schools. Our school currently serves Pre-K through 8th grade and we are excited to announce the launch of a pre-school program for 3-year olds this Fall! If you have an elementary school-age child I invite you to consider giving them the gift of a Catholic education. Many families think they are unable to afford a Catholic school, but it is not as unaffordable as you may think. Resources for financial aid available so I encourage you to talk with us! CANDLELIGHT ROSARY AND PRAYER GROUP will meet Monday, 28th at 7pm in the Blessed Mother s chapel near the west doors of the church. All are welcome to join this special devotion to our Lady. MASS AND HEALING SERVICE: THE HEALING OF MEMORIES will take place, Thursday, January 31st at 6:30 pm, hosted by OUR LADY OF GRACE CHURCH in Encino (Ventura Blvd. at White Oak Avenue ), Father Bob Garon presiding. Join the Apostles of Divine Mercy, San Fernando Valley for this life -changing, in-depth experience of healing for body, mind and spirit and Deliverance healing. Learn a method for forgiving those hard to forgive. Sometimes, when a person has been deeply hurt, its not always easy to forgive. Fr. Bob will explain how to achieve healing from life s hurts through a powerful imaging prayer in which forgiveness begins. We will be praying to stop abortion and for men and women to see that there are other choices, other possibilities. Each person is asked to bring a votive candle, in a container, to be presented at the altar of the unborn. World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. Children who have suffered from trauma, through abuse, loss, or another tragedy, may have different ways of viewing the world through the distorted lens of their fears and worries, and often need the help of trusted adults to guide them through their emotions. Many children use denial as their first coping method, so getting them to talk about what s happened and explore how they re feeling and what scares them now is important. Consider consulting someone with expertise in child development a psychologist, counselor or experienced teacher might have suggestions as to how best to support a child in the aftermath of a frightening experience.
