3 Word, Eucharist, Life 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 45 Psalm 96 1 Thessalonians 1 Matthew 22 Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." The words of Jesus give us pause for reflection on what is in our hearts We need also a clear mind as to who our Caesar is and to whom we owe anything We are committed in baptism to Christ who is the center of our living and loving Love of nation is not the same as loyalty to Caesar or whoever comes after him as civil authority Our dedication goes beyond reverence for the Stars and Stripes beyond attention to the national anthem or even singing it Our fidelity goes beyond a person in a political office even while still we hold the office itself in esteem We live in the time of the coming of the Kingdom which is in some sense right at our door In this life we are bound by the obligations of responsible citizenship at the same time giving attention due to the affairs of the Kingdom for which we pray repeatedly Christ has died to affirm his commitment to the God of love and mercy and to draw us into the matters of mercy and love and justice in the worldly realm even as citizens of the coming realm which is God s domain Help! We are looking for volunteers to launder and iron the altar linens. The altar linens are handkerchief-sized cloths per week. 4 Dorothy Day House Christmas Fundraiser After ALL Masses TODAY The Dorothy Day House will be taking pre-orders for Christmas wreaths and garlands as a fundraiser for their ministry to homeless families. They will have multiple options available. You will be 22 Noble Fir Wreath able to order items for yourself 28 Mixed Evergreen Wreath or order gifts with the direct delivery option, which is a wonderful way to buy wreaths for family members or friends, especially those who do not live in the Memphis area. Representatives of the DDH will be taking orders after all Masses today. Orders can also be placed online at between now and November 10 Western Cedar 2nd. For more information, 22 Mixed Evergreen Garland call Wreath The Dorothy Day House (DDH) provides temporary housing and support services for homeless families in Memphis, Tennessee. Working with other local agencies, staff members and volunteers provide families in need with a safe environment and the means to re-establish their independence. Since the DDH opened in May 2006, we have had 51 resident families. That number represents 58 adults and 109 children. In addition, we have helped numerous homeless families for whom we have not had space at the DDH with emergency needs, food, furniture, clothing, household supplies, etc. Most families have become homeless because of trauma (e.g., fire, violence, death of a wage earner) or unemployment/underemployment. Some come from families who have lived in poverty for many generations. In the spirit of Dorothy Day, the House relies on a people-helping-people model to provide transitional housing for ordinary families who have simply hit a rough spot in life. We help them over that rough spot by utilizing the talents of hundreds of volunteers to serve them in whatever way we can. Our philosophy is based on Dorothy Day s dictum, The mystery of the poor is this: They are Jesus and what you do for them you do for Him. The Dorothy Day House depends primarily on monetary and in-kind donations from private donors and organizations. While we are not officially associated with any church or denomination, we are rooted in the Christian Gospels, just as Dorothy Day was. For more information, see or visit our Facebook page.

7 Good Works Are a Response To, Not a Reason For God's Forgiveness, Pope Says Friday, October 20, 2017 Junno Arocho Esteves, Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Christians are holy not because of their good works but because they recognize their sins before God and receive his forgiveness, Pope Francis said. In his homily at Mass in the Domus Sanctae Marthae Oct. 20, the pope said that good deeds are "the answer to the freely given love of God, who justifies us and forgives us always." "It is the Lord; He is the one who has forgiven our original sin and who forgives us every time we go to Him," the pope said. "We cannot forgive our own sins with our works, only He can forgive. We can respond to this forgiveness with our works." The day's Gospel reading from St. Luke, in which Christ warns His disciples about the dangers of hypocrisy, speaks of people trying to appear holy to others, while remaining "all dirty" within, the pope said. "These people put makeup on their soul, they live off makeup, holiness is makeup for them," he said. "Jesus always asks us to be truthful, but truthful in our hearts." Jesus, the pope continued, offers a different path than the hypocrites, who are nothing more than "soap bubbles" - here today and gone tomorrow. Pope Francis said Christ's warning on the danger of hypocrisy is a call for all men and women to "be consistent in our life, consistent in what we do and what we live," which brings with it the joy of God's forgiveness. "Truth always in front of God. Always! And this truth in front of God is what makes room so that the Lord forgives us," the pope said.
